With a haunting cover of Hozier’s “Take Me To Church”, and a stellar debut EP Rooms most recently pacing the pair’s current ascension into alt-pop circles the world over; The Familiar’s latest single “Patience” dives into more personal territory. Mirsky weaves a vocal-central aesthetic through a plea for patience to her lover over Martinsen’s pulsating, synth-driven beat and rhythmic, foggy pop hooks for a tune that swallowed us up from our first listen. The Familiar’s deft yet subtle use of rolling staccato synths played off a lush set of vocal reverberations also has us drawing up comparisons from the gloomiest of Kavinsky tunes to College’s wonderful Heritage LP and even a touch of Johnny Jewel laden synthetica. And in case you weren’t aware, those are all very lofty associations. Hop on The Familiar wagon with “Patience” before literally anyone else on behalf of a TMN premiere.

Don't Give In

Above the Arctic Circle during Norway’s season of darkness (aka “mørketiden”), a chance encounter between an American and a Norwegian spawned a transatlantic musical labor of love called The Familiar. Working together exclusively via email and texts, the duo of native New Yorker Ruth Mirsky (ex The Drums) and producer Mads Martinsen, who was born and bred in Tromsø, Norway, is the northern lights meeting the skyscrapers of New York. Their sound, hailed as “seductive synthpop" by The Guardian, has evolved over the past few years with 2 independently released EPs, numerous syncs including an HP/Virgin Racing commercial and the trailer theme music for the TV show "Unge Lovende" (NRK, Norway), as well as several music videos. 
"Stuck Together" is the latest single from the duo which marks the beginning of a new chapter for The Familiar and comprises the third installment of Norwegian director’s Åsmund Hasli’s noir video trilogy. Brooding and downtempo, the song charts the ever-changing tides of a real relationship that is both exquisite and exquisitely painful. 
The Familiar is working on new music and plan on touring Norway in 2019.

Norwegian polar pop duo The Familiar are back with “Everything”, the first taste of their forthcoming debut album set for 2020. Written and produced by Ruth Mirsky (ex The Drums) and Mads Martinsen, “Everything” is a smoldering tribute to northern Norway—a magical place that beckons like a siren, where time seems to freeze in a darkness that never moves.

The newest single "Number Station" from Norwegian/Brooklyn duo The Familiar explores the sense of alienation we feel in the modern world. Radio broadcasts whose purpose and origin remain unknown are fascinating in their own right, but The Familiar use a recording from one such station dubbed "The Russian Man" to draw a parallel between the cryptic messages sent over the airwaves and our own modern tendencies to broadcast our lives, directing our thoughts and feelings to no one in particular while anxiously waiting for a signal in response.
