From Kennedy through Vietnam; the rise of the civil rights movement; the hippie counterculture and then in 1969 the killing of Meredith Hunter at Altamont and the Manson family murders finally ending the American dream.

This song is about a couple who are feeling uncertain about their relationship (maybe for the first time) but each not realising that those same doubts are being internally echoed by the other.  On a broader theme its also about recognising that life keeps changing and that whilst some days all you can see are clouds, the blue sky is always there and will eventually re-appear.

From the Earth Beneath Our Feet album.  This was a working title that came from the 'the cliffs of Dover' line (if you are old enough your will understand).  Like many working titles it stuck.
