The Footing: Pilgrimage (Part Three)

Chris Jones visits the Church of St Mary Magadalene in Newark-on-Trent (accompanied by artist and writer Emma Bolland)and reflects on 'The Dance of Death', a surviving fragment of pre-reformation wall art in one of the church's two chantry chapels. The painting is referenced in the title poem of Jones' sequence 'Death and the Gallant'; a reading of this poem features towards the end of the podcast. City, country and coast (and the spaces in between) are the settings for these journeys; here, the act of walking is, by turns, exploratory, destructive, restorative, defiant, contemplative and devotional. The Footing will be published by Longbarrow Press in September 2013.
