Ho Ho Ho Hopefully - The Maine (Cover)

The last few days had been crazy. I stank and I could notice it. I had dirt under my nails, my mouth was dry and my breath had the lingering smell of cigarette smoke and cheap French Canadian beer. The old bus trundled into Kingston from Montreal. The three of us were so fucking glad to get off it. We were some of the few who weren’t making the full journey down the 401 to Toronto. There was something about that bus station that felt like home when in actual fact, we weren’t. We were miles away from home. 3000 miles across the Atlantic. I barged my way to the kiosk and paid for a bottle of over priced water with a few dimes and nickels left in my guitar case. It was gone within a few seconds. I realised that I had been thirsty every since we ran out of the HI in Montreal that morning.

People disappeared in dribs and drabs until it was just the three of us left sitting on our bags on the platform, cigarette smoke trailing up into the air above us. Alex got out his guitar and started strumming the chord sequence we came up with earlier on that day in Montreal. I stubbed out my rig on the hot concrete and did the same. Dan, with a cheeky look on his face began drumming along and before we knew it, the three of us turned the (what we thought was empty) bus station into our own stage. The sun started going down throwing trails of golden summer hase through the trees which shone over us. I couldn’t help but smile and neither could Dan or Alex. Filled with a sense of overwhelming joy, pride and achievement we sang and played as loud as we could, knowing that we were back at our temporary home in Kingston. In many ways, we had achieved one of the biggest parts of our dream which was to hitchhike, play shows and busk. And boy had we done that. My eyes were sore and bloodshot from the night before and I was beyond exhausted but somehow the music and the light made me forget that. As the song finished we all looked at each other, saying so much without actually saying anything, we were all thinking the same thing. I turned around to see a tall, bald headed, leathered, tattooed, biker looking guy. He was big and seemed to loom over us as we sat back down on our backpacks. I noticed he had a camera and had been taking pictures of us. Slowly, he made his way over to us on his crutches, in the deserted bus station, just outside Kingston Ontario and said “Thanks boys, I enjoyed that”. He reached out to shake my hand and as he did so let $20 transfer from his hand to mine. He smiled, nodded at us and walked off. None of us could believe what had happened. We just burst out laughing and lit up another smoke. A few minutes later we saw a car drive towards us with a familiar face behind the wheel. We knew it was our ride to a hot shower, a bed and hot food, not to mention our favourite Canadian family ever. Oh and booze.

I will always, always remember that moment.
