So I want to be honest. We want to be sincere. we recorded this a while ago. And I honestly am not super thrilled by the "in tuneness" of the vocals. i don't want to front like I am. maybe. but I haven't felt motivated to record them lately. and i don't know why no share this as a rough gem and a demo, and y'all can help me out. ddo some in tune singing lessons and add your voice.  I love the guitar though. and i love hte vocal melody. I'm not thrilled with the harmony i did on top. i could tkae that out i jsut want y'all to hear it. and I don't want to pretend fun puffins is a we because it's mostly me. though i mean tori and ori have helped. you've all helped. we are the fun puffins.

Away from the now

I think I have a tendency in my writing, in great poetry, or at least the poetry that effects me the most when I write is that of Filipino Kundiman songs, and other pop song lyrics. Why do these letras stay with me? I look at the words as I learn more, I realize they are quite cheesy, perhaps overly sentimental. But what I got from my titos at titas translating songs for me was the impressionistic way of trying to convey literal and figurative meaning simultaneously. The words were stand ins for ideas. There is a bridge in my mom's mind where understanding is filtered out to convey to someone else. I love the way  that when Tita Patty or Tito Ray would translate lyrics to a song it gave possibility. I wasn't stuck in one word choice. “Ngayon at Kailanman”: Now and forever, or maybe for all time and also right here. No one translation is the same. But I get the meanings. Different translation from everyone in the Rondalla group.

I connected a lot with these memories when I would study Talmud with friends at school. Well this words means this, Rabbi Nachman wants you to think of it this way, Rashi is also looking at this word.

Not knowing a language, but being around it is a place of extraordinary possibility. I am not attached to words. I get many different meanings across. I really see the words are just tools. Ate Michelle was tired and trying to convey to me what she knew. I haven't studied words in a linguistic/neurological way.  I am just getting meaning. I am not closed off. The words of a sappy OPM song are so open for me to interpret as an individual. Catchiness is not in the phrases resonating to me, but instead in syllabic novelty. I feel a sense that rhyme scheme doesn't matter, meter doesn't matter, the words don't matter (of course they are very important in Filipino). But a poem in a language you don't understand reinterpreted in writing gives you something more poetic, it is just the sense impression. And said live, words spoken get to have a remarkable privilege of opportunity and possibility. They are not conclusions or endings, they are just beginnings. 

Since I was small my mom would translate these songs for me. There was a progression in my psychology. The world went from chaos. And it went into a place signified by language. I don't know where at what point Tausug became a foreign language to me. I think it was about the time I was three. Suddenly it was clear that English acquisition was accelerating and Tausug acquisition was to be atrophying. My brain was very willing to prune this neurons out of the mix. 

I asked my mom why she didn't speak either Tagalog or Tausug at home with me. She said, “I wanted you to be an American now. I wanted to be an American now.” Who are the Americans. I saw Barack Obama's State of the Union last night. He kept emphasizing the importance of the United States and America. How could he not and he is the president. What is America to you? In 6th grade English we always learned about we the people as all americans: The natives, the chicanos, black, white, poor, rich, Jewish, gay, straight. I don't feel like an American all the time. I was raised to believe in Christ as an absolute number one first. I never could love anything more than Christ. But I could love America. This is a country so it might as well be our country.

What is America to my mother? To my family? She calls the Philippines: Home? Every one at Iskwelahang Pilipino they say, “I went home, I'm going home.” And to the Home is the Philippines.

The Embassy on Roxas Boulevard. It is where everyone wants to go. What is America to my Filipinos. The Filipinos are my country men I suppose? I don't share too close a resemblance nor do I share a language other than English?

America is where I learned that I was alive. America is where I lived. So far in just Middlesex County, Massachusetts except for one ill fated month in Brooklyn. America is a big country. A big country on a big continent that was stamped out.
