Jonathan Dollimore is one of Britain's greatest cultural critics. In his early work, he recovered the subversive and revolutionary potential of early modern drama, and went on to co-found the Centre for the Study of Sexual Dissidence at Sussex; his book Sexual Dissidence recovers the lost histories of perversion from Augustine to Wilde. His work, whether on death and loss, or sex and censorship, consistently provides new directions in thought and punctures over-easy pieties. In Desire, he brings his intelligence to bear on his own life – and has produced a rigorous, wise and daring account of desire's many and changing forms. 

He joins James Butler to discuss sex and sexuality, the power of literature, domesticated transgression – and learning to think beyond the academy.

Everyone's heard about the rise of the robots: they're going to put us out of jobs, Skynet is going to usher in a miserable dystopia, or a friendly AI will automate everything we hate, freeing us to live a life of luxury. But what if both of these accounts are wrong? A deeper look at the actual consequences of automation might suggest something quite different is happening. The gains in productivity automation is supposed to make don't appear: a decade of stagnation tells us quite otherwise. So what have the automation theorists got wrong? And if the robots aren't going to usher in utopia, how might we build it with our own hands? James Butler is joined by Aaron Benanav, author of Automation and the Future of Work, to discuss. Gregor is a musician and visual artist. For us he put together the next part of his ongoing series of "Practice Mix", which consists of self-composed productions. These are spontaneous live recordings, all of which were made last year. The recordings consist of own programmed samples, which are used in addition to excerpts from Arthur Russell, Sade and Twin Peaks. As a third component Roger G. Kies used some recordings from an old radio that he received via shortwave on moody summer nights. Even if there are tonal similarities and connections, Roger G. Kies's closeness to Hip Hop presents itself above all in his musical practice. That is to say in his handling of references and samples.
The result is an experimental flight simulator in which sounds are interwoven, only to be picked apart again in the next moment in analytical self-observation.
So take part in this glider journey through soft clouds and exquisite glitches.
No seatbelts required, smoking is permitted.
