Sibir is an ambient music exploration of five of the wild landscapes (and seascapes) of Siberia, from the southern hills of Buryatia to the high Arctic and under the waters of the icy sea.  Yakutia has recorded the coldest temperature in the Northern Hemisphere and is a place of great natural beauty.

Winter In Yakutia

The album "Ancient Metals" combines field recordings from various international locales with drone organ and synth and distant melodies played on a 100-year-old “banjolin”, a banjo-like instrument that uses mandolin tuning.

Each piece is meant to conjure up a different ancient environment, or fictional in the case of Melniboné, which is the name of the dreaming island of evil in Michael Moorcock’s Elric mythos.

The primary musical inspirations for this recording were the early dark kosmische experimental music of Klaus Schulze ("Cyborg", "Irrlicht") and the avant-garde organ music of Eliane Radigue ("Adnos", "Trilogie de la Mort").

Kalpas by Khan Tengri

The title track from the June 2016 release has an oceanic theme and is inspired both by Tangerine Dream and a haiku that I wrote in fifth grade and just discovered in a pile of ancient papers. It features three main sections, an ambient, a Berlin School, and a psychedelic segment.

Oceans Are Moving From The Arctic To The South Reflecting The Light

The title "A Wider View" reflects a dual purpose.

First, this an eclectic and diverse collection that encompasses and expands upon all genres of instrumental music that the Gateless Gate has created since 2012: progressive rock, psychedelic pop, post-rock, ambient, new age, and Krautrock/kosmische.

Second, as the album cover indicates, the music suggests we take a wide-screen view of the beauty of our home and consider how lucky we are to live here...to live at all on this wonderful, (currently) habitable planet.

Track 4 is dedicated to conservationist and broadcaster David Attenborough because I grew up watching his nature programs and continue to do so. He has done as much as anyone to foster a love of the Earth and the life on it in people like me over several decades.

"Nothing Is Missing" is a post-rock/ambient album inspired by my Buddhist practice. The titles of the pieces, with the exception of the title track, were taken from the poem "Flowers" in Roshi Phillip Kapleau's book "Straight to the Heart of Zen."

Musically, the album combines influences and textures from post-rock, ambient, new age, progressive rock, and kosmische music. There may something of interest to be found by listeners of acts like Sigur Rós, Hammock, Constance Demby, Harold Budd, The Church, Helios, Stars of the Lid, Ashra, Popol Vuh, Tangerine Dream, and Pink Floyd.

The aim of this music is to illustrate through sound that no matter how turbulent the times become and how hopeless life seems, underneath all the turmoil and tragedy — everything is actually all right. All is as it should be.

This album contains 11 new arrangements of songs, performed by Allister Thompson, written or co-written by the late Australian singer-songwriter Grant McLennan (1958-2006). They cover all periods of his career, from his time with the Go-Betweens, partnered with Robert Forster, to his solo career, to his Jack Frost project with The Church's Steve Kilbey.

Dusty in Here

This is a new epic made up of two songs previously released by Twilight Fields in 2017. They were originally recorded as one long song, but I chickened out and separated them back then. This epic contains atmospheric elements of Floydian prog-rock, post-rock, post-punk and ambient and goes through several sections as it wends its way along.

While I'm not displeased per se with the original 2017 recordings, this is some of my best work, and bringing new and improved skills to bear has allowed me to greatly enhance this new mix and master.

The lyrics of part 1 deal specifically with my yearning (now satisfied) for a move away from my old life and habits to a place with more space, nature, and new beginnings. The second part is tangentially related in that it summarizes our confusion and distress in the digital age, when it seems so hard to escape both society and our own anxious egos.
