This mix goes one full circle of BPMs, starting at 70 and going up to 140. I wanted to make a mix that strays away from my usual mixes of a slow, growing progression, of many layers and focus more on a selection of tracks I love, old and new. This is not about showcasing new music or about this normal mixtape concept but more like one of those old mixes of your favourite tracks taped from the radio ;) I embraced the fact that Pingipung are open to anything and this allowed me to experiment a bit more and put in tracks I wouldn't normally consider, from jazz to old-school Deep Medi Dubstep. Big thanks to Pingipung for the invite!!

Pingipung Podcast 133: El Búho - A Full Circle

This is a poem I wrote in the weeks after Tash passed. I was remembering this trip down the Murray River where Tash, Sarah, Harriet, Meryl and I, joined Kia on her 4 month paddle from source to sea. We kayaked for five days, camping on the river bank wherever we liked the look of, laughing and eating bojangles by day, warming ourselves by the fire and staring at the stars by night. I always thought it was luck that stopped us all getting crushed by the big old river red gum branch, but I realised when I was thinking about this trip, it might have actually been Tash's pace that kept us safe.

I recorded this a couple of months ago and planned to re-record it, planned to change it, planned to finish it, planned to make it better, to make it do more justice to how much joy Tash brought, how thankful I am that I got to be her friend, how much I miss her glorious presence and light in this world.. but for now I thought I should just share what I have as an expression of how much she meant to me. I hope you like it.

The River - For Tash

‘New Morning’, first single from The General Assembly’s upcoming second album will be released 1 March 2024.

It’s their first release in 7 years, following a bout of serious illness for band leader Matt Wicking. As he heals, the music is flowing again, this time weaving together reflections on personal and planetary health - exploring how we carry on in the face of unthinkable loss.

All considered, 'New Morning' is an apt title for the start of a new chapter for the band, with a new line-up, and a raft of upcoming singles and sophomore album due to appear later in 2024. 

THE SONG
New Morning, the latest release by Matt Wicking and collaborators (‘The General Assembly’) features the stunning background vocals of Kelly Day (Broads), percussion from sublime contemporary drummer Maria Moles, and soundscapes by multi-instrumentalists Paul Raine and D.A. Calf. 

The song is about the opportunity in life’s challenges, with the sublime vocal pairing of Wicking and Day giving way half-way through to bathe the listener in a four-minute outro of blissful dissonance.

The single is released as part of an EP with three accompanying ambient tracks:
