Taken from our most popular EP of 2021, Swedish producer Lazarus Moment’s “Never Return” (SERA009) quickly became a standout track among listeners in our community. Inspired by the future garage pioneers that came before us, we sought out someone who shared those same influences - this made it easy to invite Boston-based artist ROBY. His remix keeps the track’s core qualities intact: galloping drums, emotive pads, and a persistent low-end layered beneath its atmosphere. He personalizes the rework by adding his own recorded vocals to it, which is a first in the Satellite Era catalog.

Earlier this year, frequent label collaborator Agent O delivered one of the most anticipated releases in our short history. Reaching faraway places amidst the internet music sphere, the project made its way back home to Chicago and into Ricky Digital’s workstation. The mysterious producer takes “That’s Enough Of That” (SERA012) and turns it into an over the top track well-equipped for a lively, peak-hour DJ set. Already heavy on the bassline and drum work, the remix takes a less serious approach by throwing in humorous vocals and quacking duck samples, all while maintaining its original aggression. The short-spanned but fun song leaves us with one very important question: who is Ricky Digital?

Our last visit to the Distant Arrays series brought us deep into the realm of jungle and drum ‘n’ bass. Upon arrival, we welcomed Zuni back for a track called “Growth” (SERA010) that pushed the envelope of his minimalist style. Shortly after its release, it caught the attention of Los Angeles-based artist RamonPang, who was very eager to take on its remix duties. Focused on a much longer progression than the original, he effortlessly introduces new elements throughout the track’s 9-minute duration. The repetition works as intended - it maintains the energy while bringing excitement each time a fresh percussive sound or synth enters the space.

Our label’s most recent release came from Turkish producer Fosil, a rising start in Istanbul’s underground scene. Packed with serious dancefloor weaponry, “Anti-You” (SERA013) took a more experimental approach than the rest, showcasing frantic drums and a clear nod to breakcore influences. With a desire to keep its eeriness unscathed, we reached out to the inimitable Sectra to fulfill the prophecy. A longtime friend and huge inspiration of ours, he turns the track into a slowed, spaced out rework that boasts gritty textures and a poisoned groove. His subtle yet effective use of sampling leaves remnants of the original on a harrowing trail, paving the way for a proper ending to this project.

The Kovert project began in 1994 as a pirate radio show on Chillin' FM. Broadcast weekly from the heights of East London, the show offered a varied diet of dark electronics. 

Having djed for 4years prior to Chillin', and influenced by the harder detroit sounds (UR, Hardwax, Cybersonik), the early chicago house sound (Farley Jackmaster Funk, Sleazy D, Adonis etc), dark european hardcore (PCP, Praxis), the UK rave/early jungle scene and the broken electronics of the Italians (SNS, Leo Anibaldi, ASU), it was only a matter of time before some ideas were recorded. 

Experiments followed. 

In 2000, No Surrender was released as part of the Praxis USA comp. It was a response to the dark UK techstep and the emerging, faster european breaks around at the time. 

This was followed by the Shock Effect, released as Praxis 34. Conceived as anti-muzak, it asked: could distraction from the banal lead to increased participation in the everyday? 

By 2002 breakcore was considered a genre and many new artists were on the scene. However, there was a lack of playable heavy tracks around. Versioning attempted to redress the balance. This time more influenced by dancehall, dub and jungle; mixing a soundsystem aesthetic with heavy beats and even heavier basslines. Murderous style was subsequently remixed by the don and released as part of the Speedhall ep on Berlin's Koolpop records. 

Kovert released labels such as Sub/Version, SMB sublabel Vinyl Weaponry, Sonic Belligeranza, Peace Off.

At the end of 2021, we welcomed Chicago-based Norfik onto our label with an attentive track [SERA010] that had us seeking more. Since then, the local beatmaker has extended himself to various pillars of the electronic music complex. He surely has learned to keep busy, from scoring short films and playing at local events, to showcasing his originals on household American labels such as TAR, Jollies Records, Juke Bounce Werk, and more.

Norfik tends to wear his influences on his sleeve with a high output of breakbeat-inspired tracks that celebrate his heavyweight predecessors. He is also unafraid to crank up the speed and tap into the world of jungle, drum & bass, and even breakcore. What makes his work stand out is his interest in ambient music, an external force that pushes him into a more emotive realm. The byproduct of his music genes is an authentic sound that may feel familiar to the avid dancefloor enthusiast, but genuine in its nature of being meaningful art from a real artist.

These attributes hold true to “Heartbreak EP,” a journey through lush ambiance met with rattling drum breaks. Norfik set out to make a collection of tracks that feel straightforward and transparent; what you hear is what you get. Unintended to be cohesive, the project feels woven together by raw emotion and shares the same theme throughout. With an influx of listeners crowding around the atmospheric jungle subculture, Norfik steers clear from the rest by delivering a recognizable yet unique body of work.

“Heartbreak EP” is composed of many different ideas that come together in a listenable package. The EP starts with “Greed,” a rhythmic introduction that captures listeners with rolling percussion. Tracks like “Denial” and “Into Action” do a wonderful job in displaying the contrast between thumping drums and atmospheric pads in the stereo space. The title track serves as the peak of the project, putting an emphasis on a tense buildup and rush of energy in its chorus. “Approach” concludes the EP with a track that touches on breakcore-fused antics, while staying persistent with the established ambiance.

One of the best qualities of “Heartbreak EP” is its ability to write its own story while still allowing space for interpretation. Norfik challenges his listeners to reflect on their own selves and remember what keeps them moving. Drenched in nostalgia yet holding itself to a high standard in modern production, the result is some of his best and most impactful work thus far.

Satellite Trax: an expansion of our core imprint that focuses on dance-centric music and its club roots; part of the foundation within our sonic heritage. This sublabel serves as a primary source of dancefloor weaponry for DJs and enthusiasts aiming to unveil the latest rhythms heard from around the electronic music sphere.
