So got my hands on some remade stems to this.....and then promptly didnt use anything but the vocal. New drums, percs, bassline, guitars........hopefully catches some of the energy from the original.

Trying to find some more obscure and lesser-known funk music topped with fresh kicks, snares, hats, bass and instruments. Coated with some curveball acapellas that should not work at all, encasing my style of straight up Ableton editing. There's bound to be something for all as i curate a catalogue of funky music.

The last few years have seen The Niceguys in prodigious form, redefining their sound through an acclaimed musical output. Now they take time to reflect by inviting some of their favourite artists to reinterpret their work for this 'Remixed EP'. First up, production duo CMC & Silenta reimagine 'Strip It'. They skilfully preserve its funk-laden goodness injecting new life into the mix with tantalizing guitar licks, irresistible synth hooks and a beefed-up bottom end that serves as the perfect foundation for the soul-laden vocals of Bobby Saint and smooth flow of Prop Dylan. Funk Maestro Jayl Funk takes to the controls for his rework of 'Don't Let Go' in which he takes the tempo down a little, adds some horn hooks and a swinging grove to bring out the best from Justina Lee Brown's amazing vocal performance, creating a nu-funk masterpiece. Next up, Jack & Jointz toughen up the infectious 'Dance' adding breakbeat elements and organ riffs to drive along Leo's neo-soul vocals, aiming squarely at the dancefloor. Finally, rounding off the package is the classic remix of Irie by Flevans. He strips things back before building them up with a high level of musicality in a groove-heavy remix that is equally at home in a club or home listening. All in all a perfect way to round up The Niceguy's releases to date whilst we wait with anticipation for the next phase of their musical journey.

In Anticipation of their long-awaited third album "What Comes To MInd" scheduled to drop in the fall, UK's premier funkateers The Haggis Horns present "Return of the Haggis EP", a 12" taster of what to expect on the new full length album with 3 tracks of funk, soul & boogie goodness! Leeds-based instrumental outfit The Haggis Horns first hit the music scene in 1999 and rose to prominence through their part in the seminal Keb Darge presents The New Mastersounds album on BBE Records. They have since recorded and performed with artists such as Jamiroquai, John Legend, Amy Winehouse, Corinne Bailey Rae, Lou Donaldson, Martha Reeves, The Cinematic Orchestra, Morcheeba, Roots Manuva, Lily Allen, Finley Quaye and Nightmares On Wax, to name a few. Mark Ronson called the band "the best horn section in the world" and was so impressed he recuited them for his TV appearances and tours. With over a decade of activity, 2 full-length albums released on independent UK label First Word Records, variuos sold-out singles and countless worldwide gigs under their belt, The Haggis Horns have steadily gained a loyal following among soul boys, jazz brothers, funk sisters and break dancers alike.

"Return Of The Haggis EP" contains two brand new tunes from the upcoming album plus a previously unreleased remix. Side-A "I Can't Stop The Feeling" sees soulstress Lucinda Slim wax lyrical over a boogie-funk disco inspired groove. Side-B "Return Of The Haggis" is an uptempo funk instrumental with a contagious rhythm in The Haggis Horns' unmistakable style with Snowboy guesting on congas. Both tracks enlist Pete Shand from The New Mastersounds on bass. The final song on the EP is a remix of the band's very first single "Hot Damn!" featuring the powerful vocals of singer John McCalllum. This new version adds some boogie/disco spice to the original's funk flavour and is exclusive to this 12". With DJ support from Craig Charles (BBC6), DJ Lubi Jovanovic, keb Darge, "Return Of The Haggis" appears set to confirm The Haggis Horns are one of the stalwarts of the funk renaissance.

Ikebe Shakedown, the self-titled album from the Brooklyn-based band, plays with elements of cinematic soul, Afro-funk, deep disco, and boogaloo in all the right ways.  After spending a few years together the group, named after a favorite Nigerian boogie record (and pronounced “ee-KAY-bay”), delivers a driving set of tunes featuring a mighty horn section anchored by tight, deep-pocketed grooves.

“Right now in cities across the globe, there are plenty of great Afrobeat revivalist bands aping the sound and groove of Fela Kuti’s legendary sound.  Yet, surprisingly few of the new groups have strayed from an orthodox interpretation of the genre or done much real innovation…Ikebe Shakedown is here to change that.  The band takes signature Afrobeat elements—big unison horns, slinky bass lines, tight little guitar licks—and blends them with tasty grooves culled from ’70s-style horn-driven funk”. – Marlon Bishop, WNYC

The Ikebe debut for Ubiquity Records sees the band push their globally-informed sound and eclectic approach to tune-writing into new territory. “Self-titling the album is a way to introduce the audience to the many facets of the band — to provide a more complete understanding of what we do,” bassist Vince Chiarito says.  “Our sound has grown to incorporate our influences without overtly representing any one in particular.  It just sounds like us,” he adds.

Most of the rhythm section met at Bard College, and the band rounded-out and officially formed when everyone settled in Brooklyn in 2008.  From there, Ikebe has emerged as a compelling voice on the progressive local scene.  After a run of dates around NYC, the band recorded their debut 7” single and the EP, Hard Steppin’, which was released on Colemine Records in 2009,receiving high praise from critics and fans alike.  The group was invited to record at Dunham Studios with producer Tom Brenneck and at Killion Sound in Los Angeles, home of engineer Sergio Rios of fellow Ubiquity act, Orgone.  “The studios share a lot of similarities — the tracks were all cut live to tape with minimal use of headphones and overdubs.  This basic approach allowed us to dig in and really focus on getting dynamic performances,” Chiarito explains.

The old school mentality to recording spills over in lush, laid-back, and soulful funk joints like “Kumasi Walk” and “No Name Bar,” where the multi-layered horn section plays off a cavernous backing track of slick drumming, spacey Hammond organ, and nimble guitar riffing.  The cinematic soul sound is warm and deep, with the 7-piece band sounding more like a larger ensemble as increasing layers leap from the tape.  At the other end of the BPM counter, on “Tunjunga,” the band build a gritty African disco jam boasting a floor-filling percussion section, adding seductive guitar licks and an irresistible bass-line to set the horns ablaze. “Tame The Beats” is pure fire — bold melodies and heavy rhythms propel the song, with Meters-esque breakdowns providing only brief respite from the action.
