D Mixolydian Reel Set

Two songs sung in the irish Language that fit the rhythm of slip jigs.
"Is Trua nach mise Bean Phaidín" (It is a pity that I am not wee Paddy's wife) and Na Cannabháin Bána (The White Bog Cotton - a lullaby or children's nonsense song. Some of us thought it could also be about "The Fair-haired Canavans) but I doubt that translation. Cannabháin Bána is bog-cotton.

We first heard the Road to Garrison reel on the "Godfather" album by fiddler Brian Rooney, but subsequently discovered several recordings of this tune by the composer Maurice Lennon (pictured). Several recordings of this tune pair it with Dick Sherlock's reel and we have added "The Red-Haired Lass" to complete a 3-reel set.

The Black Slide and the Rubber Band Slide (Caomhín's Slide) composed by Peadar Ó Riada abd recorded with the group Triúr on the album Triúr sa Draighean. Played here twice each by MIDI flute (arrangements by Seán Quinn)

This set that was taught to our group by our friend Ciaran O'Reilly (flute) who graced our session for several years before his untimely death in September 2014. Caisleán an Óir (hornpipe) followed by The Mist Covered Mountain (jig). Both tunes attributed to Junior Crehan, the Co. Clare fiddler.

Two more bandances to add to our collection. The first one is a variant on the Scottische "Dornoch Links".  Joe Bane (Baine?) the Co. Clare musician, has a number barndances credited to him, but this one is certainly not an original composition , but an arrangement of a Scottish traditional tune.

Down the Broom & The Gatehouse Maid

This early recording by the Sligo Master may have influenced Irish musicians to play these two reels as a set for many years to come.

Two newish reels best played slow (I think). The Stone of Destiny was part of Maurice Lennon's Brian Boru suite.

Stone Of Destiny / Torn Jacket Reels

Trip to Birmingham is a composition of the Roscommon whistle and flute player Josie McDermott. The Galway High Reel is also known as the Old High Reel, The Other High Reel, The Beehive and the Whistling Postman. The arrangement of the second tune is taken from a recoding by the Galway accordion player, the late Kevin Keegan, who emigrated to west coast USA in the 1960s.
