'Take 5' - Preview

Hailing from the depths of SFUAD, The Jazz Heroin turns the standards you are used to into an aural experience.

Biography
We got a jazz sax and guitar player, a reggae dummer, a classical bassoonist, a pianist who raps, a bluegrass banjo player, and a bassist who does some awesome solo songwriting. We may be all over the place on our own but we come together for a tasty cocktail.

The Band:
Candelaria Alvarado, Bassoon (Chandler, AZ): "Beginning my musical study in the Fall of 2003, I immediately knew that music would be the field of my future." As multi-instrumentalist (Tuba, Euphonium, Trumpet, Clarinet, Guitar, Piano), composer, arranger, and producer, Candelaria finds JH to be a creative outlet for her diverse interests to collide. In high school she was part of several groups including Chandler High School's Symphonic Band who was the recipient of the Heritage National FOG 1st place band several years. Also during this time she was an active member of Az's electronic dance music community and frequently Dj'd. Her undergrad has consisted of composition with a strong emphasis on electronics as well as knowledge of western and world theoretical musical concepts. She has studied bassoon under Melanie Sangunetti (AZ Opera) as well as recording artist Dr. Mary Stuckemeyer and composition under Danene Richardson and Dr. Steven Paxton. Matt Ruder, Guitar (Allen,TX) : "I began music on the violin in 6th grade, and received an electric guitar for Christmas in 8th grade (13 years old)--played all my orchestra music on guitar, noodled on basic chords until 10th grade when I started studying under Shayne Green, who introduced me to music theory, how to truly understand music, and jazz, which I fell in love with. In 11th grade I played all over Dallas with my rock band, Secret Breaks at Dawn. In 12th grade I performed with various jazz and rock groups, and am currently studying at SFUAD under guitar master Ross Hamlin.""I'm pursuing music because I find true joy in the guitar, and to be quite honest I totally geek out over jazz. I've always been a nerd, and jazz gives me a chance to unleash my inquisitive mind and be creative. I love improvisation as well as creating beautiful melodies and chord changes.""My favorite food is good cornbread, GOOD cornbread. If you can cook good cornbread, you have my heart."

Sam Armstrong-Zickefoose, Banjo and Guitar (Colorado Springs, CO): Since 7th grade Sam has only grown in curiosity and love for his instruments. "I am pursing music to expand a unique for of communication and to play with as many different voices as I can." After graduating High School in Colorado Springs, where he played in a variety of indie and bluegrass groups he decided to expand his knowledge at Santa Fe University of Art and Design in one of the nations only school's offering Banjo Studies. He has studied under Jayme Stone and Charlie hall and is currently under Tom Adler. Darrell Luther, Piano (Dallas, TX): Beginning his musical studies at a young age, DLou, wants to "Purse music to entertain people with my talents." Aside from piano Darrell also is a Cellist and Rapper. After graduating from Booker T Washington HSPVA, he decided to attend Santa Fe University of Art and Design. He is a member of ICC (Inner City Connections) in which Spring 2012 had great success opening for international act Public Enemy. Zac Haugland, Drums (Park Rapids,MN): Began playing music at 12 yrs old, He has attended Liberty University and Santa Fe University of Art and Design, currently studying under Mark Clark. In his high school years he was in a band called "Sticky Situation," which helped develop his great stage presence. "There is no better feeling than playing music," is Zac's reply when asked why he is pursuing music.
