Running off to Gretna Green to get married was, for many English couples in the Georgian period, the equivalent of eloping to Las Vegas, and many matches made that way were about as stable as those made in Las Vegas. Marriages in Scotland just needed an exchange of vows before witnesses, so it was also an opportunity for lovers divided by class or abusive households to escape. 

The melody is equal parts Shenandoah and a major-key version of The Royal Oak. 

Gretna Green

A bittersweet ballad-esque tune penned by The King's Busketeer's talented guitarist/ukulelist/Muppet impersonator, Josh G.S.

Featuring Andrew Prete on 12-string & harmonica, Josh on guitar & lead vocals, and Sam Atwood on both bass and banjo (somehow).

Chilly Arms Of Ocean

Ripped from the history books and set to an old folk tune, this is an ordinary man's account of the 1381 peasant's revolt, an event that shook the English medieval world to its foundations. The name of the song is a medieval euphemism for the average peasant, and later was the title of a Tudor-era play that lampooned the rebels as brain-dead yokels. Piers the Ploughman

Written by our very own Josh Gannon-Salomon, this ballad has become one of our go-to selections when we need something sweet and sad. Josh stole the melody from another tragic ballad, the Butcher Boy (we recommend the Clancy Brothers' version). This track was recorded live at one of our favorite venues, the Gulu-Gulu Cafe in Salem MA, and released to you just in time for this year's early crocuses.
