Nearly a year in the making a new Kitchen Utensils track finally makes light of day featuring the evocative emotional guitar playing of Neil Cutlery and the vibrant virtuoso keyboard playing of Dr Gloom with Mark Sinister producing.  Track composed by Cutlery, Gloom and Sinister.

It was Wayne Shorter who said that “composition is improvisation slowed down”. And it’s harder to find something that gives a feeling of time passing than the Triple Echo improvisations by the Kitchen Utensils. In each case, these improvisations were recorded in a single take after a large meal, with minimal editing. And you can hear the individual flavours of the meals fulminate in the music. This is what music really boils down to. We can disregard David Attenborough and his contention that music is hugely sexual. We can ignore the way that Big Music just uses artists to make money. The Utes (as they call themselves) do not seek money or sex based upon their output.

But that’s the purity of their vision. They have no need to prove anything to anyone other than themselves; and they find purity in the lack of motives other than the struggle to prove anything at all to anyone.

Musicians now live in a time of unparalleled freedom. The instruments are now so readily available via software programmes that the need to work and play to eat have passed, and music can now be regarded as an entirely cerebral activity - Music for Music’s Sake. Freed from the shackles of needing to please an audience the Utes can make the contents of their own cerebra visible to anyone with ears to hear and the objectivity not to judge before digestion is complete.

So strap your headphones onto your cerebellum and hear the curry.

Setting aside monstrous egos and massive musical differences three of the founding members of The Kitchen Utensils reformed after 33 and a third years for 1 day in May 2015.  The result is the aptly named "Time to Resign" which features Neil Cutlery on guitars, Dr Gloom on bass guitar and keyboards and Mark Sinister programmed drums and arps.
