This was born (as the name suggests) on the island of Holbox, Mexico, where, standing in the waters of the carribbean we started to play a small drum and clap as the sun set. We recorded ourselves in the water, made a loop of it, and played over the top of it at a show that same day and people went crazy. This song will be promoted through inviting our fans to make dance videos, recording live renditions, and by sharing widely with DJs.

Longtime friend, DJ, producer Sid Vaga saw that Nickodemus was about to play at the Electrafrique party in Dakar & asked if I can get in touch with this singer he noticed on DJ Cortega's Instagram page called Beni-Fadi. Beni-Fadi comes from Bandafassi, Senegal's South East region, where they speak an almost extinct language called Menik. In an attempt to keep the language alive, Beni decided to collaborate with electronic producers & bring his language & story of the Bedik people to the World. Mba-Mba (Dilemma) speaks of being proud of who you are & where you come from even when you are the minority. La idea de este nuevo disco fue la curiosidad de Bellido por sentir lo que emerge desde la reinterpretación de otros artistas respecto de sus canciones originales y poder experimentar, según indica el músico, “cómo estos sonidos se amalgaman con otros artistas de distintas latitudes de la tierra”.

Es por ello que Chakana Remixes trasciende a la idea de “nuevas versiones”; integra la necesidad del joven músico peruano de volver a experimentar con nuevos sonidos y sensorialidades propuestos por otros artistas. Así, la búsqueda nace a partir de querer vivenciar, tal como propone Bellido “cómo estos sonidos vernaculares los entienden otros productores, que están muy abiertos a muchos estilos”, integrando, por ejemplo, el disco, el global bass, el downtempo y el house. 
 
En la reinterpretación de las canciones originales participaron músicos de diversas partes del mundo, tales como Nina Simmons (Italia), A-Tweed (Italia), Juan Correa (COL), Tribilin sound (PER), El Extravagante y Sistema Beat Andino (Chile), quienes hicieron un trabajo detallado y desafiante, ya que los temas originales del disco Chakana ya representaban una gran complejidad y virtuosismo impuesto por Bellido en un disco original profundo, con un imaginario potente de significados y conexiones ancestrales e investigación sobre sonoridades propias de diversas zonas de Perú.

Hankel Bellido - Carnaval De Ayacucho (Sistema Beat Andino Remix)

Invited by Sammy Baloji to delve into the historic preparatory research for Johari - Brass Band and hours of music archives, Mo Laudi has connected this to his own archive to construct a soundscape that form parallels between Congo and South Africa via New Orleans and France, questioning the shared pan-African experience of appropriation, of exploitation of natural resources and Black bodies.

Legend has it that, once a week on Sundays, the slaves in New Orleans were “allowed” to congregate and dance in Congo Square. When the occupying French military hurriedly headed for Haiti in the late 18th century, they left behind their brass instruments which were instantly taken up by the local communities who went on to develop innovative and now world-renowned music styles. Complex syncopated drum patterns, lung-based rhythmics, grooves and claps became ingrediency that formulated Jazz.

Mo Laudi recalls that his first experiences of brass bands in South Africa were the local ‘Ga Molepo Church’ as well as the ZCC, Zion Christian Church: “they performed with gusto and had such a groove about them”. His sonic composition references the hybrid spirituality that merged religious celebrations and African traditions such as dinaka/kiba (the traditional music of the Sotho people), the Hip Hop and RnB samplings of the HBCU (Historical Black Colleges and Universities) brass bands as recently highlighted by cultural purveyors such as Beyoncé at her Coachella Homecoming performance.

Congo Square in D# Minor merges multi-layered influences: how slaves re-appropriated Western wind instruments (the metal of which had often been extracted from African mines), trumpets, tubas, trombones, French horns appear, mixed like a Gumbo dish, with African roots, Black and Creole roots of Jazz inspired by Congo Square, samples from a jazz funeral, a New Orleans tradition of burying the dead by having a ‘second line’ street procession, found recordings of the Congo river, funeral processions in South Africa, scarification ceremonies in Congo, the horns blowing in a call-and-response unison creating a trance atmosphere capturing collective spirituality. It also includes extracts from a lecture by Dr. Howard Nicholas on the role of economics, how international institutions are under-developing Africa and how rich countries take advantage of poor countries by exploiting raw materials such as copper with no decent retribution.

Mo Laudi’s proposed playlist of 100 tracks attempts a fusion of the plethoric history and currency of brass bands worldwide and the interconnected influence of marching bands, African and European music and performance on popular culture.

Multi-disciplinary artist, composer and producer, Mo Laudi’s work questions race, mobility, erasure, post-colonial ideologies. It connects with spirituality, African knowledge systems, Afro-Futurism to form new ways to understand the multiplicities of cultures. Recent experimentations have led him to develop a new visual language in paintings, collages, videos and ceramics. 
He proposes new perspectives in the field of sound installations. Informed by his South African roots, he is renowned for his key contributions to Afro-Electronic music from a London base during the first decade of the millennium and, since then, from Paris. Mo Laudi experiments with sound as material. He creates sonic landscapes, mixing vocals, textures and rhythms with his core knowledge and experience of art, fashion, dance, design and music as sociopolitical critique of society.
