Brighton shoegaze luminaries Air Formation return on … with ‘Were We Ever Here’, their first new material since reforming in 2014. Loosely based around the group of songs they were working on in 2010 before their split, the band worked on the EP in secret, stating “We thought it would be a more exciting, organic, experience if we just got on with it un-announced and released it as fast as we could.”

Air Formation formed in 2000, long before their spiritual forebears Slowdive and Loop were once again considered acceptable influences. Since signing to Club AC30, long a bastion of the modern shoegaze sound, in 2005, the band gained a devoted following and for albums such as 2007’s Daylight Storms (which was mastered by alternative rock legend Kramer) and their final LP, Nothing To Wish For (Nothing to Lose), in 2010. Their incendiary live show also saw them share stages with the likes of Vessels and Efterklang.

Ten years on from their first release for Club AC30, the 57 Octaves Below EP, the four songs on ‘Were We Ever Here’ cover every corner of Air Formation’s sound, whilst adding surprising new touches. The swathes of feedback and distortion are all present and correct, along with swooping New Order synths. Slow-building opener ‘I Could Stay’ comes to life in a swooning burst of fuzzed-up bass and hyperactive Ride-like drums. Closing track ‘The Wasted Days’ takes the entire EP into another gear, shifting from kinetic drone-pop to expansive post-rock territory, bringing this record to a close in a shower of noise.

Say the band themselves: “We really feel 'Were We Ever Here' showcases the best of Air Formation, but then takes it on a different path to any of the music has come before.” While their break-up in 2011 involved no fireworks or fistfights, the band do admit that “what once felt effortless and exciting was becoming hard to hold together, and that is no way to make music.” ‘Were We Ever Here’ suggests that the band’s spark has returned. With a vengeance.

MATJAMI: Acoustic-electronic soundscapes, deep beats, slow trance, empty space: meditation by listening and playing. 
Tip: Use good speakers or headphones to enjoy the rich, deep sounds and binaural recordings.

We three at MATJAMI (Marcel Bode, Tjalling de Leeuw, Mike de Leeuw) develop our sounds and grooves as we interact live, using our bronze, wooden and stringed instruments, (Balinese gamelan & gongs, bowls, Tibetan horns, Chinese guxing & gongs, Javanese kendang drums, timpani, beer bottles) with Native electronics, samples and live loops. The quality and the texture of our sounds are at least as important as the composition. 
We play our sessions 'on the fly', where one of us starts and the rest comes in at leisure... All you hear here was recorded live, with only some simple stereo and eq mixing afterwards.
We love to perform in open areas, theaters, level stage, and spaces with a special feel to them; a small audience is just as nice.
Recently we started collaborating with other audio-artists like VictorYibril, Fintan O'Brien and Phlip Smith (G.A.), Miraela, and Augenmerk, combining their very different music styles, field recordings and soundscapes with our beats and sounds.

Founded by co-writers Matthew William and Kedra Caroline, The Morelings hit the Philly scene as a three piece in August of 2014 and later recorded their debut studio project with Philadelphia producer Kyle “Slick” Johnson in the fall of that year. Issued in January of 2015, the three-song EP, No Sign, consists of “dark dream-pop guitars, ethereal vocals, and dilated atmospheres” (Going Solo). The following summer, they toured the East Coast and Midwest as and, meanwhile, were invited to contribute a cover  of “Lonesome Tonight” to a New Order tribute album called Dreams Never End, about which Philebrity has said, “you’ll never settle for the original version again.” With positive reception, The Morelings released three captivating music videos for each song of their EP, establishing a firm visual aesthetic. In late June of 2015, the Morelings began working with Philadelphia producer Jeff Zeigler (The War on Drugs, Nothing, Kurt Vile) on their first full-length LP. They have since expanded their act to a five-piece, delivering live performances reflective of the rich, layered studio sound for which they have become known.
