For this months show, it’s an excursion into some forgotten 90s Techno gems. It was a very much off the cuff session with no planning, just pulling records off the shelf and mixing them as I found them so it’s a bit rough round the edges, but there’s some real memories in there. Mostly 93-96 material, The sort of tunes I played at Eurobeat 2000, Helter Skelter and Analogue City around that time. It was a real rediscovery for me so I hope you enjoy the journey. Top tracks from Cristian Vogel, Subhead, Claude Young, Mark Bell, DJ Hell, Djungle Fever and the like.

90s Techno Special - Threads Radio Sept 2021

Holy Smokes, we've just gone and done it! Claude Young on the Warehouse Manifesto mix series...

Detroit Techno Legend and my favourite techno DJ of all time providing the sounds for this month. My first experience of witnessing the greatness of Claude Young was back in the late nineties in Dublin where he made quite a few appearances and won over crowds with the greatest of ease. A true showman who brought the fun and funk to techno despite maintaining the raw edgy toughness of techno at the time. 

It's fair to say that Claude Young is an idol of mine and is one of the biggest influences on my DJing style. For me, copying what Claude Young did was the way to go! 

His flair for creating rhythms and bringing funk into his techno sets is unparalleled and his unique style is a show to behold. Anyone lucky enough to witness the two copy action (chopping and cutting)and crossfading with his mouth without ever missing a beat will understand what I'm rattling on about!

I almost forget that Claude Young is also a very accomplished producer. I was too busy in awe of his DJing skills to notice anything else!

DJ Sotofett presents "Resonance of Dub" at E-S-Radio Lisboa (2024-10-24)

ßetamax presents LNS & DJ Sotofett and their ❝スパッターズ日本ツアー / Sputters Japan Tour 2024❞. The two Tresor resident DJ's will be playing Detroit-Techno, Electro and Real House Music on five gigs in Sapporo, Osaka and Tokyo between November 11th and December 7th 2024. The tour is accompanied by a special edition Japan Tour 12" featuring DJ Gizzard + LNS + DJ Sotofett. The 12" released on WANIA will be available on all venues throughout the tour for Yen 1500.

LNS from Calgary/Canada releases music on Tresor Records, WANIA, Counter 99 and has an upcoming double 12" project ready for UK's Emotional Response. With a classic touch of Electro, Detroit + UK Techno and Braindance she also runs the club concept ❝LNS-id❞ which will also be featured at Tengu Shokudo in Tokyo, December 6th.

DJ Sotofett from Moss/Norway runs labels Sex Tags Mania + Amfibia, and WANIA where he just released the album ❝WANIA mk1❞. His Electro/House/Techno productions are released on Tresor Records, and the Afro-Dub on Honest Jon's Records. He's just about to release the album ❝DJ Sotofett & The Colours of Computer Generated Instruments❞ on Clone West Coast Series, and also runs the Dub Club series "Resonance of Dub" which will also be presented at Forestlimit in Tokyo, November 22nd.

A few words from the artist:

1/ How would you describe your personal connection to music and how it influences your creative process?

My connection to music is very much a love/hate relationship. Some days, I wake up and feel an overwhelming, transcendent love for all forms of sound—whether it’s music, noise, or even random everyday sounds. But other days, even the chirping of birds gets under my skin. This duality really mirrors my creative process: one day, I feel like everything I create is brilliant, and the next, I question how I could possibly produce something so meaningless.

2/ As an artist, how do you see the intersection between fashion and music?

Music is my chosen medium of expression—it’s what I’m most sensitive to. But it’s the same with fashion; everything feels interconnected. When I attend a fashion show, I can sense the music and the artistry behind it. To me, a melody can be just as much a form of art as a drawing or even a pair of loose jeans. It’s all about choosing the medium that resonates with you.

3/ What particularly interested you in collaborating with Études Studio to make this mix?

Honestly, it’s the pants. Études pants have this precise, cool cut that I absolutely love. I can’t deny it—I’m a huge fan of their pants ahah.

4/ How did you curate this musical sequence/audio journey?

I was on holiday in Zanzibar, an island in the Indian Ocean off the coast of East Africa, and a local saying really stuck with me during that trip: Pole pole, which means “slowly” in Swahili. While the mix itself isn’t particularly slow, I was inspired by the serene and breathtaking water landscapes I experienced there. I wanted to translate what it might feel like to party in such a setting into music.

Anyone who’s been to one of Donis’s residency nights can tell you that the expressive, energetic style of house dancing emblematic of New York’s house music heyday is not yet a lost art, even if dance battles and baby powder are no longer a common sight on today’s dancefloors. A Dominican DJ and producer born and raised in Brooklyn, Donis equally embraces tradition and innovation in their approach to house, techno, and beyond.

“I think there is a huge lack of actual dance culture specifically within the younger generation of club-goers. A big goal of mine with the residency is to cultivate space for that. I see parties as conversations between DJ and dancer, one-sided conversations are never fun.” – Donis, from an email interview in September 2023
