Childhood - Blue Velvet

The revival of 80s post-punk and British indie music is slowly but surely making waves again. Modern bands like Interpol, Radio 4, Astral, and The Stills are infusing their alternative music with a fresh take on the sounds of the 80s. The influence of iconic bands such as The Smiths, Suicide, Joy Division, and The Cure is once again in vogue. Joining this resurgence is Sweden's latest export, The Search, who prove with their debut album that you don't need to be noisy or extravagant to make an impact.

Drawing inspiration from the likes of The Cure, Joy Division, and Sad Lovers & Giants, The Search crafts a sound that melds crisp, wavy guitar lines with a classic rhythmic foundation of bass, drums, and keys. Their unique blend of prog and post-punk creates a listening experience that is both captivating and endlessly replayable. The album stands out with its powerful bass and synthesizer elements, setting The Search apart from their contemporaries.

This song is the first song Danny and I truly finished together since I moved back to OKC. We sat on my Mesta Park quadplex balcony one hot day and started strumming this summery guitar part. At one point, I said, "we need a really Beach Boys-esque melody here" and Danny just started singing "Barbara Ann" which actually became the vocal rhythm of the song. 

The song felt like it was going to be a pretty clean surfy continuation of Golden Year, but then Tom Bishop suggested we should cover Devo's "Uncontrollable Urge." While practicing for NMF we would go into these poorly executed takes of the song and ended up shelving the idea. However, I think Devo made its way into this song - the drum beats, synths, and pre-verse turnaround have a Mark Mothersbaugh-type vibe that I dig. Zach Zeller came over for about twenty minutes and added some of the best parts of the song - the bass line, the guitar solo, and the synth hook all came from the twenty minutes he came by.

Lastly, the lyrics for "Neuromancer" are loosely inspired by William Gibson's book of the same title. That's all the references to VR cowboys and stuff. These are some of my favorite lyrics we've ever written.

Neuromancer

Newcastle dream pop outfit Seeing Hands have announced the upcoming release of their debut single ‘I Knew You’. Recorded in their hometown, the track is the first in a series of releases planned over the next twelve months and sparks immediate comparisons to the likes of The War On Drugs and Wild Nothing.

Comprising of Kev Curran (vocals, guitar), Nick Hodgson (lead guitar), Jon Varty (bass) and Liam Guillan (drums), the quartet’s jangly guitars and dreamy vocals have already earned them airplay on Radio X and their profile is sure to be enhanced further following this first single release.

Produced by Jack Boyle and John Elliott (Loft Studios, Newcastle), Seeing Hands’ ‘I Knew You’ is released on 5th August and will be available to purchase on iTunes and Spotify.
