After Kris' encounter with the mysterious man in the shadows, a door opens up ahead letting out a decent amount of light. A new figure walks through this door and spots Kris. This is Asgore!

Asgore moved to a new home many years ago after unfortunate incidents rendered him emotionally unfit to reign as king of the Underground. Ever since moving, he's built a new, down-to-earth (or down-in-earth, even) life, coexisting among other monsters as equals, as a member of their community, trying to help make their living environment more pleasant and inhabitable.

Some of the monsters still treat him with a walking-on-eggshells amount of respect, something he wishes he could leave behind in favor of living a more comfortable life removed from all the politics.

As Kris expresses to Asgore a desire to leave, a desire to further their journey back home, Asgore feels he hasn't done a thorough enough job of preparing them for the adversaries that may await them. While the monsters in New Home are generally rather harmless, the monsters that beyond the threshold are, in Asgore's words, stronger and more vicious. They want freedom. They want Kris. They want their SOUL.

He's convinced that pacifism won't always be an option. So Kris must prove to him that they're willing to do whatever it takes to make it out alive. Mercy is no longer an option.

The only way to progress the battle is by attacking Asgore. Showing him mercy or stalling through various acts will prove to do absolutely nothing.

After some time walking through the hot, hot desert, Kris encounters a pair of skeleton-folk squabbling amongst themselves about who knows what. Probably puzzles. It doesn't take long for the tall, handsome skeleton to notice Kris and immediately point it out to his compatriot. The two continue to bicker over the fact that the human is there and that the shorter one isn't appropriately dressed for the situation that's taken place.

The taller one apologizes for his lack of manners and immediately begins to welcome Kris and introduce himself (and his brother) to them.

018 - Positively Papyrus

Upon exiting town, Kris is met with harsh sandstorms for the final stretch of their journey through Dryedout. But before they can quite reach the end, a familiar but hard-to-identify shape makes itself as visible as it can among the sand flying about.

Despite the overwhelming wind and sand, the figure's familiar voice rings through, confirming for Kris that Sans is standing before them. During pacifist and most neutral routes, Sans seems rather apprehensive about the situation you two are in. He was put in charge of the Royal Guard while the previous captain tended to some... "errands" that have been keeping them busy for a while now.

Sans' attacks during this fight consist primarily of bones. He's also the first to introduce a new SOUL mode into the mix; the Orange SOUL mode. This soul mode swaps the effects of orange, blue, white and green attacks. Orange attacks require being stationary while blue attacks require charging directly through them. White attacks heal you, while green attacks deal damage. The orange SOUL mode also allows Kris to boost forward in any direction.

Despite, or perhaps even because of his apprehension, Sans still intends to keep Kris on their toes, consistently switching their SOUL between yellow and orange, sometimes even switching mid-attack.

Diving quickly into a separate timeline, after the battle against Alphys, where Kris has chosen instead to use violence, Suzy decides to take matters into her own hands and fight Kris herself. This happens in one of two scenarios:
- Kris killed at least 5 monsters in her presence;
- Kris killed Alphys.

If Alphys was killed, it becomes extremely hard to spare Suzy. Not impossible, by any means, but it'll take a LOT more work to convince her that you were doing it out of self-defense. Kris knows Alphys might be capable of killing them (intentionally or not), but Suzy knows Alphys as the sort of person who would never cause anyone mortal harm. Even if a human were involved.

If spared, Suzy remains in your party, albeit rather reluctantly. If even a SINGLE monster is harmed after this point, however, she immediately leaves the party.

This fight may also trigger in Coldfront if it hasn't happened prior, similarly as a result of killing five monsters in her presence. At that point, though, it becomes a lot harder to convince her of it being self-defense, considering she knows by now that Kris is perfectly capable of pacifying the monsters.

Grillby runs a cozy little tavern up in Coldfront. He manages the bar and cash register while his employees, walking little embers, act as the servers.

Grillby wouldn't seem to be the type of person to have a reason to fight you. But when you (or your partner-in-crime) accidentally steps on and snuffs out one of his employees...

(Don't worry. The ember is fine. Grillby just got a little freaked out because there's been accidents before.)

It's at this point where Kris and Suzy part ways, leaving Kris to explore the hospital entirely on their own... which is where this song plays! This song plays during the majority of the main explorative portions of the hospital, and additionally serves as its battle theme... which means we've got yet another batch of enemies to reveal! 

For additional context, I should explain that some of these swaps relate to what the CORE swaps with... that being the True Lab! This swap takes the general "trying to save lives" idea and gives it a more... positive spin. I hope.

072 - Doctors and Patients

Once they start their first trick, this song kicks in. This fight is very much an endurance test. Napstablook is NOT pulling any punches in the name of magic and mystery. Their main battle gimmick is switching Kris' SOUL color between Cyan and Purple. 

Cyan has a similar approach to the attack color trickery that Sans' Orange SOUL mode has, but rather than swapping the attack color with the healing color (or swapping other colors at all for that matter), it swaps specifically light and dark, requiring Kris stay within the bounds of an attack. There will always be at least one attack present within the battle box, and Kris' soul gains a brief amount of immunity when exiting an attack that they can use to navigate navigate to another attack. This also changes the orientation of their SOUL, turning it upside down.

The purple soul mode is a bit of a mix between Undertale's purple soul mode and the Switch-exclusive soul mode seen in Mad Mew Mew's fight. A grid of points is laid out within the battle box and Kris must jump/teleport between the various points to ensure they don't get hit.

These two soul modes can also be combined, visually taking on the purple color while also vertically flipping the SOUL to match the Cyan mode's orientation.

The attacks themselves are based in their various magic tricks. Sawing something in half, pulling things out of hats, crying hats into existence to begin with... the list goes on and I have no intent expanding on it at this time!

074 - The Supernatural

Kris reaches the end of the hallway and pushes through the tall door to the other side. On the other side they're faced with a quiet little town. This quiet little town is home to the handful of monsters that still live there.

While exploring this little town, they learn a lot about the Underground's previous royal scientist and doctor, who tragically passed away a few years ago. About the various breakthroughs he was responsible for, such as the artificial sun. 

Kris also learns a lot about a young human whom the doctor had met, about their friendship with the young prince and how they put everything on the line to try and save the prince after his tragic, untimely passing, to bring him back to life in whatever shape or form was possible. 

Kris learns that, despite all odds, there may have been a breakthrough in that department as well, before the newly revived prince mysteriously vanished. This was kept under wraps from the general public, but some monsters claim to have seen him near the time of his disappearance.

Some time later, the doctor fell ill to one of his own creations, and he soon was nowhere to be found as well.

Kris learns about how all this affected the king and queen, how this affected their policy on how humans should be treated and how this affected the general morale of the underground. In the span of a few months, the prince, the human and the doctor had all vanished without a trace, so people believed.

And yet...

Many of the monsters still living in this town are absolutely adamant the doctor is still around. That the doctor will bring them to salvation, lead them out of the underground to finally see the surface at last.

The human and prince remained a mystery. The doctor...

077 - The man who spoke in hands

* The penultimate test.
* But, like, in a fun way!

===== NOTES =====
In Papyrus' monologue he rattles on about the various "foes" Kris has bested in battle (non-violently, of course), before finally declaring to Kris that he's almost jealous he never got to take them on himself.

The battle itself would be pretty reasonably difficult, especially for a battle against Papyrus, but there's no malicious intent here. He's just trying to have fun and prove his worth a bit here. He'll never actually mortally damage Kris, instead stopping once their HP reaches a certain threshold (probably once Kris' HP reaches 3 or below), allowing Kris to freshen up and challenge him again.

Much like Sans, Papyrus primarily forces Kris' soul into Orange mode, though gets particularly tricky with it and occasionally fakes Kris out with Cyan mode instead.

If Kris fails this battle seven times, Papyrus accepts his triumph over Kris as definitive and allows them to move on.

079 - The Gauntlet of Deadly Terror!

===== NOTES =====
The long anticipated battle against the Queen has finally arrived, whether they're ready for it or not. Unlike Asgore in Undertale, Toriel DOES NOT disable Kris' Mercy button in any way shape or form, allowing them to TIRELESSLY SPARE HER!

In fact, the main reason for this is because throughout the battle, Toriel will actually plea for Kris to turn back and run away, to live a life with the friends they've surely made along the way. She does not want to fight, not even a little bit, but does so because she knows she has to.

Despite Toriel granting Kris the option to run, Kris actually straight up refuses to do so. They're too close to turn back now. They cannot back down now, there's got to be another way for everyone to have a happy ending here. This very sentiment is what keeps them going, the idea that even though there's seemingly no right answer HERE, there's bound to be good answers in a future where they press on.

Endlessly sparing Toriel is not the easiest strategy to pull off as it would take far longer to whittle her down enough to spare her than it would to simply fight her proper, but it IS an option.

083 - Reluctant Reprisal

After a long, exhausting battle, Kris has dealt enough damage for the queen to be willing to surrender. But right as she's about to accept their offer of mercy, she's met with a surprise attack that completely wipes her out. Kris watches in horror as her body disintegrates and leaves only her SOUL behind, but snatches it before anyone else can.

This is where the culprit reveals itself.
Dr. Gaster.

He tells Kris his plan. To return back to his original form, to finally be able to live the life he'd lost so long ago. For this, he believed, he'd need a strong SOUL. Kris' SOUL. And yet, despite being a human soul, Dr. Gaster needed to guarantee that it was strong enough for such an undertaking. 

Dr. Gaster realizes, however, that there's still another option. It's right within grasp. If Kris won't relinquish it, he'll simply take it by force. This option, of course... is the Queen's soul. A monster soul that's strong enough to persist even without a host, a vessel, to support it. Kris would use it to cross the barrier, and Dr. Gaster couldn't allow that. 


So he takes it by force and immediately absorbs it before Kris has any chance to react.

084 - Something Truly Wonderful?

Unfortunately for Dr. Gaster, the form he takes on is one that's far less stable and consistent. His current form is still stronger than his last, and he still feels a closer connection to who he used to be, but with the passage of time, it seems Toriel's memories aren't quite enough to keep him stable.

This is a battle against a man who has nothing to lose, and so much to gain. He knows that Kris' SOUL, no matter how weak it is, will always be strong enough to stabilize him. Stabilize him enough to start fueling his memories, the Queen's memories, and his own body as a whole.

No longer shall he be stuck living in the only piece of him scattered across space and time that managed to land right where he used to be. No longer shall he be stuck living in the smallest piece of him that lacked the necessary memories to bring the Underground to salvation.

He WILL be the hero, he WILL bring salvation to monsterkind and he WILL do so by any means necessary... even if peace isn't an option.

Quick thing I'd like to address!
A few songs -- this one included -- now have thumbnails!! I've been sitting on a small handful of them, so I figured I might as well finally update the thumbnails on YouTube and SoundCloud. It takes a long while of calling out to the Queen, dodging and weaving through the Doctor's various attacks, but Kris manages to pick up on the faintest hints of a response to their pleas. They know she's in there somewhere, and now it's just a matter of finding her.

This phase of the battle is essentially one long "soul section", with the attacks Kris endures being Dr. Gaster's attacks rather than Toriel's. Kris keeps diving deeper and deeper into the darkness in search of any signs of Toriel or her SOUL, calling out to her along the way through the help of ACT command buttons that manage to appear in their path.

Kris manages to find Queen Toriel's SOUL and pulls it out of the darkness into... well, still the darkness, but the much more shallow end of it, allowing Toriel to regain some strength as she's not completely subdued by the darkness.

Toriel provides Kris with various health bullets, and with her being fully conscious and capable, she's also able to help distract, weaken and (somewhat strangely) stabilize Dr. Gaster enough to finally get him to snap out of things. It still takes quite a lot of work, but eventually they succeed, and the Doctor admits his defeat.

087 - THEM

With Toriel's willing help, the Doctor takes a much more stable form at last. Not quite the one he was hoping to be able to take, but one he's happy enough to accept as his own. With Toriel's body destroyed, she has no choice but to remain a part of Dr. Gaster, an uncomfortable circumstance that forces her to step down from her royal duties.

Depending on Kris' actions leading up to this fight, the emails they receive may be from different people. The email typically updates Kris on the current goings-on of the Underground, such as who's taken over the throne since they left, as well as more personal updates regarding the friends (or foes) Kris has made along the way.

In some realities, Asgore sees his grand return to the throne.
In another, Alphys instead takes over.
Sometimes it's Papyrus, or Sans.
Sometimes it's Undyne.
Sometimes Napstablook and Mettaton may even rule together.

The lives they've spared and the lives they've ended all affect what happens next. I'll have more details on what specific endings take place... eventually! Maybe. Probably. I hope.


No promises.


With the end of the Neutral route content, I'll have to announce a bit of a hiatus for The Old Switcheroo. This due to some holiday events I've been prepping (and still need to continue working on!). That is in fact "events" plural. I'll make a more formal announcement in the community posts about the specifics and where you can check things out.

What I can announce here, though, is that The Old Switcheroo will be returning early next year! Uploads should start early next year, either January of February. That mainly depends on a few college-related things coming up on my schedule, but I'll be sure to update you on the various relevant platforms when I know more.

While there's still plenty to come, I'd still like to take the time to thank everyone for their overwhelming support. This project has been in the works for YEARS, starting off as a little goofy spin-off before eventually blossoming into a fully-fledged, genuine real attempt at an Underswap take, and I'm glad people enjoy the work I've put into it so far.

After the College Fund Conspiracy came to an end, Sergeant Bow-Wow (the Colonel Sanders dog statue) had mysteriously appeared in the space behind Sans and Papyrus' fridge. How it got there? The Ruined Dummy had at one point found this new, pristine body elsewhere in the Underground and decided they needed a safe place to keep their newfound body as pristine as (super)naturally possible.

Papyrus had already attempted to enter the space, but was subsequently threatened with the destruction of his unborn children, so he instead decides to put Kris in charge of handling this new situation.

After the long and grueling battle against Sergeant Bow-Wow, Kris accidentally manages to cause a scratch on their new body. It's at this point that Napstablook, Mettaton and M.A.D. have shown up to try and put a stop to things as well, feeling a sort of spectral disturbance just given SBW's increased amount of stress. While SBW is initially extremely furious and unleashes one final rage-fueled attack on Kris... Mettaton and M.A.D. help SBW realize that no one can ever keep their body entirely clean just by avoiding anything potentially harmful. Imperfections aren't always a bad thing, and in fact, usually add more character to something than perfection ever could.

In the end, the group (including Kris) all decide to honor the time-bound tradition of lying on the floor and envisioning themselves up with the stars, which further dirties SBW's previously pristine physique... which they seem to have finally made their peace with, even if only a little bit.

The Old Switcheroo is my very own take on Underswap. The majority of the swaps are what you'd expect, but there are a small handful that stray from the expectations of your average Underswap take.

While fighting Papyrus in a harmless neutral route, he realizes how much fun friendly sparring matches can be and already starts to devise a plan to start his very own fight club!

First rule of Papyrus' Underground Fight Club: Advertise it to the surface and back.
Second rule of Papyrus' Underground Fight Club: The safe word is "Spaghetti!" If you're ever worried the fight is going beyond the bounds of a typical friendly sparring match, yell Spaghetti!!

Through Papyrus' Underground Fight Club, you're able to challenge any monster you've previously faced in a new sparring match! If for some reason that monster is unavailable, there's also a battle simulator that can be used instead, designed by Alphys!

The battle simulator has other functionalities, but these will be elaborated on... later.

It wasn't always meant to simulate battles between various monsters. Alphys originally built it to simulate hypothetical battles between her favourite anime characters. Despite this, it didn't take her too long to make the necessary modifications to better suit Papyrus' needs for it.

This song specifically only plays after you've reset back to your previous save point after the battle against Dr. Gaster. Once Kris re-enters the waiting room, they're met with a very surprised Suzy who's overwhelmed by her emotions. As much as she tries to suppress them and put on the brave face she always does, it's just too much for her this time around.

After she regains regains her composure, she expresses, with difficulty, how she felt about having left Kris behind, and about how she hasn't seen her mom in months, because she's to scared to confront the reality that her mom may be dying. She wants Kris by her side as she pays her mom a visit in the hospital, and will tag along for the remainder of Kris' adventure.

Despite her intent to visit her mother ASAP, when they speak to the front-desk worker, they inform them that Suzy's mom is undergoing some tests and that they'd have to wait a little while to see her.

"Surely a young girl like you would have plenty to do in the meantime," they'd add.

From this point on, Kris and Suzy can either:
- Handle the optional "room behind the fridge" activities, if Kris hasn't already done these by now.
- Hang out with Alphys, which Kris will receive a call about from Alphys as they leave the hospital.

This song plays during any Fight Club battle that isn't against a (mini)boss! While each of the bosses get a remix of their battle themes, these will not be covered as part of the main soundtrack. Primarily because they are COMPLETELY optional and also because I don't have any of them ready.

To elaborate more on the functionalities of Alphys' battle simulator, while it's entirely optional for monsters you've encountered in the overworld, as they'll likely sign up for a friendly sparring match against Kris, there IS the option to "connect" multiple people to the simulator and changing their respective stats. 

These can be changes such as giving a Moldsmal an insane amount of ATK power that'd take Kris out in one fell swoop. Additionally, Kris' stats can also be meddled with here, including their LV and equipment, whether or not they have it. Great for testing things out before you end up buying it!

Battles can of course just be held without the simulator and would function as normal, though perhaps with slightly tougher sparing conditions to spice things up.

As Kris and Suzy dejectedly leave the hospital to find something to do, Alphys calls Kris to invite them over to go running with her and her exercise group. Suzy is of course invited to tag along as well, once Alphys realizes she's there with them, and together with the rest of the exercise group they all go in a jog around Leafpile together, before ending right back at Alphys' place, where they start to freshen up a bit again, have a drink, have a light snack...

It's then that Suzy gets a message from one of the hospital staff that her mother is ready to see her.

Since there's not a good place to relay this information other than the relevant song I may as well state this much here: Suzy's reunion with her mother ALSO uses "Rejoined", potentially slowed and pitched down.

During their reunion, it's learned Suzy's mother used to work in the CORE, before it was shut down. One day, it had a big meltdown, a phenomenal increase in temperatures that caused the icy structures that surrounded it to start melting. She was forced to evacuate as fast as she could before it had long term consequences on her health, and despite everything requires frequent testing and has stayed in the hospital for quite some time since the event.

Upon hearing that Kris and Suzy intend to go to the CORE, Undyne insists on tagging along for their safety. While the CORE is much safer to enter nowadays, it still houses the unfortunate remnants of those who did not survive.

Throughout the CORE, research notes can be found scattered on the ground, as well, detailing the various steps in Dr. Gaster's research in regards to treating the monsters severely affected by the meltdown of the CORE. It's revealed that with the Determination that Dr. Gaster extracted from a human SOUL he had come into the possession of not too long ago, he intended to re-stabilize the monsters who had melted.

This seemed to work for a while, according to the reports, but one final report implies that something happened, and that the Doctor himself must have been affected by it, too, as it remained unfinished.

The three learn rather quickly what ended up happening to the poor monsters who succumbed to the CORE's meltdown. Dr. Gaster's research notes reveal something about the differences between human SOULs and monster SOULs. While they both have their own versions of it, their forms of Determination are vastly different. For Monsters, this essence is known as Willpower, whereas Determination was later coined by Dr. Gaster as a means distinguishing the two types.

And what he'd also come to learn at the very last minute, though he never was able to finish his thoughts... Determination and Willpower do not mix well at all, it seems. 

This would eventually result in monsters who would literally fall apart. Not quite to the same extent as turning to dust, however. Unsettling, barely-living pieces of Monsters, running on equal parts Determination and Willpower.

The monsters whose remnants can be encountered are Knight Knight, Madjick, the CORE Mercenary silhouette known here simply as CORE Supervisor, Terry, Vulkin's Dad and a group of Temmies. All of these people had some business at the CORE at the time of the meltdown, aside from the Temmies, who simply seemed to be there as emotional support for Vulkin's Dad.

After getting through the CORE, the three make their way back to the hospital. Kris and Suzy part ways with Undyne to continue through the capital together. Together they plan to convince the Queen to let Kris go home.

Once they arrive, Toriel seems as uneasy as before. In a twisted sense, she seems relieved that Kris brought a friend. As they stand together, face to face as the sunset shimmers through the barrier, Toriel still initiates combat, as if a lost life is inevitable. But before Toriel can make any sort of move, Suzy forcefully shoves Toriel out of the way.

At this point, Asgore happens to show up. He first focuses primarily on Kris and their safety as Toriel scrambles back up to her feet, before finally noticing she's still alive and well, too.

Suzy realizes that Kris really is about to go home. A lot of people might not get a chance to ever see them again, at least not for quite a while... and this gives her an idea. While she promised to stay by their side for the rest of this, she quickly excuses herself, and returns not too long after with Undyne and Napstablook, who have already reached out to various other monsters to come say goodbye to the human that touched everyone's hearts.

Before they know it, the whole room is flooded. Everyone's sad to see them go, but it seems they all understand it'd be unfair to Kris to force them to stay here.

Besides, it's not like they couldn't visit them again in the future, right? It's only a hike up the mountain and a big tumble away!

Of course it was too good to be true. A happy ending? Conflict resolved so easily by a couple teenagers? Please.

Dr. Gaster has spent years trying to find a safe way out of this place without the need of human SOULs. Without the need to sacrifice. He was so, so close. On the verge of a breakthrough. Then one day, due to one mistake he made, he perished. He became fragmented. A husk of his former self, with the memories, or lack thereof, to show it.

All he knows now... is how much he longs to be himself again.

And he's going to stop at nothing to get it.

After all...

His true form... is within reach.
