Gerardo Frisina has established himself throughout the years as one of the finest interpreters of the Latin-influenced Jazz club sound. Four years after the release of “Join the Dance”, he returns on Schema with a brand new album, “Movement”.

Gerardoʼs contribution to the history of Italian Jazz is remarkable: along with his activity as a producer, his work has been pivotal in uncovering rare Italian and European Jazz for international audiences, thus reviving this rich heritage. The studio is where he feels at home: his recent activity has been considerable, with a multitude of projects and single releases, and finally, a new album. Like a gifted movie director, he conducts with delicacy and mastery a fine ensemble of musicians, bringing into these recordings the outcome of lifelong research into sound. His fifth full-length album summarizes his experiences, his endless listening sessions and experiments with different music cultures.

Here are 12 pieces describing another amazing journey through Gerardoʼs rich and exotic influences: these are the adventures of a European Jazz man immersed in Afro-Cuban inspirations. Gerardoʼs love for Cuban music is well- known. Jazz had been influenced by Cuban music since its early days and Gerardoʼs blend of this tradition has become a trademark. His fans will not be disappointed by “Movement” and the uninitiated will discover the manifold nuances of his sound.

It’s sometimes good to keepadmirers at a distance. For her “come-back” album, Brisa Roché followsthis rule to the letter.Afterfour albums in France, she returned to her native California—not the one with six-lane highwaysand palm trees, but the one up north, where mountain lions roam,and sequoias tower. There, hiddenin  her  home-studio,  she  channeled  song  after  song,  inspired  by  tracks  arrivingfrom producersall over the world. Some sent sound hoping to re-provoke songwriting in the vein of jazz-singer-Brisa freshly arrived in France the moment the Twin Towers fell, who haunted the stages of Parisian caves with ahigh shadowy voice, forcing journalists to compare her to Billie  Holiday.  Others  sent  what  revealed  a  preferencefor  theavant-gardismof  “Mystery Man” off ofher first record on Blue Note, that transported fans withpop as daring as it was sweet. Still other composers sent tracks they hoped would prolong the sound they loved in her hits “Whistle”and “Call Me”, from her psych-folk period.But  of  course,  Brisa  did  not  revisit  the  past.  She  invented  a  future,  a  space-time  exercise, creating songs  across  thousands  of  miles,  across  musical  genres,  where  a  voice  springs  as easily  from  a  computer,  an  applauded  stage,  ora  virgin  forest.  The  album  INVISIBLE  1  istitled  such  because  anythingis  possible  when limitations  imposed  by  astudio setting are discarded,  when  judgments  and  timidity  are  veiled  by  distance,  when  collaborations multiply  across  the  waves,  when  intimacy  with  strangers  makes  art. Brisawrites  quickly, urgent  with  the noveltyof  imported  sounds  and  privacy,  40  melodic  arrangements,  40 stories told, narrowed down now to a 14-song album with two sides, upon which two sides of her personality dance.The “introvert side” nestles on Thibaut Barbillon’s intimate guitars and soaring chords, the singer a dreamer and an insomniac, giving herself up in confession. As if escaped from a girl group, she invites us to walk with her, or to lock ourselves in her room withher.The “extrovert side”, sunnier with a more electronic feel and Blackjoy at the control panel, features  ideas  from  co-producer  Marc  Collin  (Nouvelle  Vague,  Yasmine  Hamdan,  Elodie Frégé...), upon which Brisa’s voice is amplified, playful as a Kate Bush, serious as a Lana Del Rey.This  production,  free  from  all  constraints,  between  continents,  out  of  French  studios, American  studios,  home-studios, underground  studios,from  Paris  to  the  American  West, gives us a new Brisa Roché. At  this  hour  of  the  death  of  the  great  British  chameleon  David  Bowie,  when  formatted records reign supreme, it’s a pleasure to see and hear an artist who stuns us with her daring art of metamorphosis.

Wonderwheel Recordings is proud to present Karimba Diabolic Remixed, a brand new remix album from the Peruvian future roots collective Novalima.  Founded by four friends from Lima with a shared passion for both traditional Afro-Peruvian music and modern DJ culture, Novalima searches for the common ground between past and future, between tradition and innovation. Being one of their home countries hottest exports, (where they have gone platinum) their efforts have a helped bridge the divide between the Peruvian mainstream and the Afro-Peruvian community, a minority population that has struggled against discrimination and the threat of cultural dissolution for generations. Outside of Peru, Novalima has garnered critical acclaim from mainstream and underground media alike, a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Album, and a featured spot in cult filmmaker Robert Rodriguez’s hit Mexploitation movie Machete. 

Here on Karimba Diabolic Remixed, Novalima has hand selected some of their favorite remixers to re-interpret last year’s Karimba album to their own vision. The choice of remixers also reflects Novalima’s global appeal in the Latin diaspora worldwide. The UK is represented with well known West London producer Seiji’s heavy synth-based four-to-the-floor reworking of “Mamaye”, and UK / Brazilian supergroup Da Lata giving us a rootsy swinging version of “Malivio Son”.  As it’s recently become a hotbed of Latin infused dance music and culture, California is heavily represented with remixes from KCRW / AfroFunke DJ and Los Angeles mainstay Jeremy Sole fleshes out “Macaco” into a smooth call and response affair. SF based Acid Jazz legend DJ Smash delivers a squelchy, bouncy version of “Diablo”, while Bay Area veteran band Afrolicious freaks “Zarambe” into a dancefloor joint equally influenced by house music and Fela Kuti. LA/NYC DJ Sabo reinterprets “Diablo” with his signature deep and dirty Moombahton style, while Thievery Corporation’s Rob Garza takes “Festejo” into swirling, psychedelic house vibe. NYC DJ producer and Wonderwheel label head Nickodemus takes “Mamaye” into bass and percussion heavy dancefloor territory, while Novalima affiliated DJ collective Coba Soundsystem deliver varied takes on “Festejo” and “Malivio Son”. Also included are remixes from Barcelona’s AndyLoop and Los Chicos Altos and deep house producer Xacosa. As an added bonus, the album contains one brand new, unreleased Novalima tracks – “Payande”.

Anyone familiar with the Pimps of Joytime live experience knows the feeling—it’s that moment when a deep bluesy groove morphs into a full-on EDM explosion, or the sensation when the wide-eyed audience collectively elevates in sync with the band’s irresistible energy.

On Jukestone Paradise, the Pimps of Joytime raise the bar with swagger to spare, crafting ten cohesive songs that ring out like the soundtrack for a ride through the diverse Brooklyn neighborhood where their sound materialized.  Pulling from lead guitarist and singer Brian J’s deep discography of influences, the creation of Jukestone Paradise began a decade ago, when he penned anthems like “Sky” and “Freedom Dancer,” all the way up to the album’s studio recording sessions.

You might accurately call the Pimps of Joytime a ‘post-genre’ band; they’re a group whose sound—even within a single song—mirrors the diversity of our era’s musical tastes. “It’s a sonic tapestry that’s representative of this time and place that we live in,” says Brian J. 

That’s where the Pimps excel, by mashing up ‘70s funk tones with modern dance beats, mixed with original samples creating their mosaic sound. For listeners weary of today’s DJ culture but eager to dance with abandon, the Pimps of Joytime are the antidote. 

“At our core, the Pimps of Joytime are not just dance music,” says Brian J of the band’s three-part harmony attack. “My first vocal mentor was a doo-wop singer, so I have a long-time love affair with vocal harmonies.”

With the release of Jukestone Paradise, the band makes official their solid touring lineup, featuring dual female vocalists and percussionists Mayteana Morales and Cole WilliamsX. And they’re hitting the road hard, continuing a constant touring schedule that’s already left prominent sets at festivals like Voodoo, Outside Lands, Bonnaroo and High Sierra in their wake.

Behind the frontlines are bassist/keyboardist David Bailis and drummer John Staten, forming the rhythmic backbone of the Pimps’ audible collage. And for Jukestone Paradise, they called in a few friends to lend their talents, including Ivan Neville, who lends New Orleans flavor to “Sky,” and Rubblebucket’s Alex Toth, who co-wrote the quirky and infectious “Dance Cardia.” 

Just as Brooklyn has changed since the Pimps started, so has the band’s sound. But as Williamsburg gentrifies, the Pimps of Joytime’s diverse evolution keeps the neighborhood’s spirit alive. That spirit goes into the Pimps’ pot, over a soulful roux of rhythm and groove.
