Twin tendrils of smoke
appeared at the corners of his lips
crept up the sides of an immobile face
re-entering his head through the tear ducts

Circled twice around unblinking eyes
emerging moments later from alternate nostrils
as perfectly formed smoke rings, that rose
steadily expanding until they encircled
the chandelier in a giant ephemeral doughnut
which promptly evaporated without a trace

"Cigarette?" he offered
how could I refuse?
