NOSE JOB 1 — MANFREDAS

This month, we take a dip in the Lake of Sweet Dreams and dance with the animals on the shore as we bring you "Afterglow In The Sky - Chapter One” by King So So.

It is not entirely clear if King So So was born on planet Earth or somewhere in the sky. Some biographies claim that King So So grew up with wolves in the deep forests of Siberia but later in his life studied taxidermy at the University of the Sky.

However, as no biography on his life is regarded as neither accurate nor based on first-hand knowledge, it is not even clear if King So So is actually a man. Some lesbian groups (note: especially in South Africa and Australia), claim that King So So is in actual fact, a woman.

Rumour has it that King So So opened the Disco in the Sky after suffering from a severe bout of depression due to loneliness and intense attacks of melancholy.

Some die-hard fans believe that King So So set himself alight in the Disco in the Sky, after an unfortunate event when a disco ball fell on his favourite flamingo, and instantly killed her. Allegedly the Disco in the Sky remains open, and around the world, fans believe that it is the only path to ultimate enlightenment.

The personnel employed vary in style and technique drastically, but such is the ethos of Soft Rocks, and furthermore the ESP Institute. At the end of the day, we implore you to shut up and listen.

#018 RIDING BACK HOME AGAIN - JONAS TON & DER GOLDENE REITER

Slumped against a wall and stinking of booze, the man paused for a moment before plunging his hand into his pocket and dragging out his phone to call a cab. He switched it on and, squinting through the harsh light and the cracks, he tried to make out what the numbers said, but all he could make out was a blurry mess of colours. Just as everything started to come into focus, an empty battery popped up on the screen, and the phone went black. He let out a sigh and a disappointed grunt, before briefly contemplating spending the night with the wall he was slumped against.

The next release to come out via Kryptox, a new Berlin-based label dedicated to fresh German jazz electronica, comes from musician, producer and DJ Niklas Wandt. The four-tracker titled Erdtöne marks Niklas' first solo venture following his collaborations with Wolf Müller AKA Bufiman and Sascha Funke, and the experimental percussionist does not disappoint. Our pick ‘Rheinfein’ disregards conventional song structure and features disorienting drums and wobbly synths, but still remains positively danceable, while the entire EP sees Niklas flaunt his knack for improvisation as he traverses a multitude of musical dynamics.

”Recorded on a hot, hazy afternoon in London. My flat backs out onto the canal and this was pieced together during a hangover. I think that probably adds to the context behind the mix. 

It’s a collection of left-leaning electronics, dub and various skits designed to reflect the wild shouts and intermittent chatter of those passing on board canal boats, enjoying the sun. It’s a little rough and ready in places but I think that probably reflects the wider world, a dusty sun-beaten London in the midst of a summer pandemic.”
