The Orb founder Dr Alex Paterson has been an extremely busy man of late. Having helmed the prolific ambient house collective for over three decades, he's now adding several new ventures to his evergrowing arsenal.

Among these are a fresh new label, Orbscure Recordings, which will be a platform for Alex's output under his various guises. Launched under Robin Collins' Cooking Vinyl imprint, the label will also be an opportunity for Alex to show off his A&R skills, an area he cut his teeth in for EG Records. First up is a collaborative release from himself and fellow Orb member Andy Falconer under the name Sedibus, which was predominantly masterminded remotely and marks the pairs first work together in almost 30 years.

On top of the new label and the fresh collaboration, Alex has also announced the release of ‘Babble on an' Ting: Alex Paterson's Incredible Journey Beyond the Ultraworld with The Orb’, a book written by close friend and journalist Kris Needs that documents his life from childhood through to The Orb's activities and his brand spanking new label.

It's a wonder he managed to find the time to steer the ship for this week's Monday Is OK mix. It is literally what the doctor ordered—he also prepped the Hors d'oeuvres, set the table and paired it with an interview about various bits and bobs—so get yourself comfortable and let Alex helm the boat safely out of Plymouth...

Experience is everything and there are few who can claim to rival the knowledge of Andy Whittaker.

As the man behind R&S Records UK office he has been involved in some of the most culturally relevant and groundbreaking releases in recent times. The label continues to remain as consistent as it first was back in the late eighties/ early nineties as it continues to break new musicians: James Blake, Lone, Nonkeen and Aphex Twin are amongst several names to release on the label in the last twenty years. As a selector his tastes have evolved with age, not conforming to trends he simply digs good music, a sometimes forgotten rule. We caught up with Andy for a chat as he delivers us a mix recorded live from Obonjan earlier this year.

On 2nd December 1988, Solid Steel started broadcasting on pirate radio station Kiss FM. With her international profile growing, she released a critically acclaimed debut EP, ‘Motorik Voodoo Bush Doof Musik’, and played at a wide variety of respected festivals and clubs in the UK and abroad. Her most recent landmarks including a debut Australia and Asia tour, as well as supporting Jon Hopkins on his European tour. Due to an increasingly hectic gig schedule, HAAi finally brought her two year Phonox residency to a close in October with a sold old party at the club - the very same night her BBC Essential Mix aired.

Solid Steel (7th December) We finish our week of celebrations for 30 Years of Solid Steel where it all started, with a mix by Detroit Techno legend Juan Atkins and Ninja Tune founders Coldcut. Juan Atkins was the guest on the first Solid Steel show in December 1988 with and you can also hear that mix and interview by Coldcut at http://solidsteel.net/broadcasts/916

Recalling his experience appearing on pirate radio station Kiss FM, Juan told us: “I remember doing the show with Coldcut in 1988 from someone’s apartment, like on the 9th floor or so in what seemed to be a huge apartment building. I was amazed by all of the pirate radio stations in London that were introducing the UK to all the new music, music styles, and genres. We had nothing like that in the USA. Pirate radio stations in the UK were responsible for this music making it into the charts as well” 

“Interviewing Juan Atkins was a buzz” recalls Matt Black from Coldcut. “Not only for the fact I had never interviewed anyone before, let alone a don of his calibre. I was a fan of his work as one of the Belville 3 (Atkins, May, Saunderson), but also earlier as Cybertron, whose Kraftwerk-meets-hiphop-electro excursions had reached and rocked us in the UK early 80s with his space-out sound. I relished the opportunity to get a direct line on the origins of electro and techno from key originator Mr Atkins, and also found out some of his thoughts on the birthplace of much music - Detroit. He expressed wonder at being on pirate station Kiss and how the UK's pirate radio supported new music and DJ culture. Juan is a beautiful guy and I well remember his soulful natural charisma and down to earthness. His DNA runs prolifically through modern music.”
