Hace unas semanas programe el primer evento del ciclo "NOISE" de Neu Paternal y me di el lujo de invitar a @elandrob. Preparo un set especial para la apertura entre Vinilos y cdjs. El set se grabo y aprovechamos para subirlo en el marco de esta serie, "More Than Music". Incluye música de Overmono, Roel Funcken, RDS, Paerer, Umru y más!

Aproveche y le hice un par de preguntas:

¿Cómo es tu relación con la música y el sonido?

Mi relación con el sonido y la música es diaria y constante, disfruto mucho de la música, la verdad diría que tengo una especie de adicción. Suelo pensar en música constantemente, incluso también mientras escucho otras músicas. Es mi mayor motivación en general, darle play a algo, escuchar, habitar espacios invisibles y a mi percepción, repletos de vida.

¿Algún momento en el que te hayas sorprendido/emocionado con la música?

Creo que uno de mis momentos de mayor emoción con la música fue cuando tomé prestada la guitarra de mi viejo, objeto sagrado, y me di cuenta que yo también podía tocar sin preguntarle nada a nadie, y ahí empezó una relación eterna de amor recíproco.

¿Podrías decir que hay una constante que atraviesa toda la música que escuchas?

A nivel musical, siento que hay muchas corrientes sonoras dentro de lo que escucho, ya que escucho una amplia variedad de cosas, y a la vez dentro de esos propios nichos hay muchas corrientes en sí, creo que el djing me fascina porque me invita a recibir todo eso y administrarlo a gusto y sentido. Me gusta sentir la música más allá de los estilos, vengo de una escuela techno y siempre me aburrió esa idea del technotechnotechnotechno, ósea, desde siempre que toco mis sets tuvieron una carga ecléctica, al menos por unos instantes, diversa, despareja x momentos quizás también, pero prefiero arriesgarme a eso que proponer una constancia abrumadora, que la considero relacionada con la voracidad de la actualidad, la constancia repetitiva y arrasadora.

¿Cómo descubrís nuevas piezas sonoras?

Actualmente para encontrar nueva música me encanta sentarme en la compu y revolver, y revolver, y revolver. Quienes me conocen se ríen de la cantidad de ventanas que ven abiertas en mi máquina diariamente. En todo tipo de páginas, la data está en todas partes, flyers, espacios, eventos, de las partes del mundo que sepas abarcar. Me encanta pensar la música como una red viviente que se alimenta de un flujo de conciencias que se expresan. Y un poco me gusta encarar el rol de dj como un eco de esas expresiones además de una parte esencial de esa red. Poder poner a sonar tu música junto a la de algún productor que te fascina y junto a una persona que está del otro lado del mundo y jamás viste pero conectas por medio de su sonido… me parece mágico y colectivo.

¿Algún sueño que te gustaría cumplir como digger y dj?

Uno de mis sueños, algo fetichista por fan de los formatos, como digger y/o dj sería poder tener en material físico la música increíble de muchas personitas que conozco y me encanta lo que hacen, y el otro sueño esencial que tengo es poder seguir, tocando, escuchando, compartiendo, la música hace para mi del mundo y de la vida una experiencia hermosa y llena de formas.

Elena Colombi, born in Italy and based in London, is a respected DJ and radio host at NTS Radio. Where she's diving into the weird, the lost, the fresh and the more advanturous sounds.

Manfredas has devoted himself to a music since an early age. He used to work on MTV and on a radio, in the clubs and recording studios. All these jobs weren't always connected with electronic music or at least with the genres you'd usualy expect to hear in a club. But actually that was a true blessing, because this dude could learn a good lesson from everything and everywhere.

Together with his friends Manfredas runs one of the best and most popular nights in Lithuania. It's called Smala and takes place in Opium Club in Vilnius. For the past 4 years Smala is offering strong line ups with the best DJs and the most interesting live acts such as Red Axes, Silent Servant, Vladimir Ivkovic or Ivan Smagghe. By the way exactly Ivan was on of the very few people entrusted to release Manfredas' music on Smagghe's Les Disques De La Mort label. The other one is a canadian imprint Multi Culti.

According to Manfredas, one of the most important aspects of a proper club night (along with the music obviously) is a decent concept in identity, as well as a strong image and of course a beauty in every detail. Honestly, attention for these tiny details is one of Manfredas' best sides. Lets take his obsession with a snare drums for example. This man is chasing a cool sounds all the time. He will allways spot a good sounding snare in some old rare record and never miss a chance to sample it. That's why the turntable is a quite important piece of gear in his studio.

For this episode of Digital Tsunami podcast Manfredas shows his great selections of old groves he might have sampled some noises for the future productions from. Combined with the modern acid house, electro and techno these records shine even brighter. For example, "Earth Rhythm" from the reissue of mysterious english post-punk band Orior. Considered to be lost recordings with all these early drum machine experiments. True rarity! And goes perfect side by side with susspended and slowed down funky rhythm of Henry Hektik's and Thomas W.Sutter's "Infernal Jet Waltz".

Among the other rare finds there is a sluggish funky (again!) disco jam from Cheap & Chic as well as Kurtis Scott's brilliant "Uncrowned Champion" imprinted in time and space with a hand held tape recorder. And the cherry on the cake is a live performance from the french free-jazz band Catalogue. This particular song called "Khomeiny Twist" was recorded in Basel, Switzerland in 1982. It's almost impossible to come of this beautiful blend of the funky bassline, the reckless guitar party and punkish drum sequence (mind the snare!).

You should always expect the unexpected with Berlin-based producer and DJ Benedikt Frey. His sets are tension-inducing while his productions tend to have this cinematic feel to them, something he's honed even more in his most recent project Keys, alongside Chris Cox. 

These hypnotic creations have seen him make homes on countless labels since his first release almost a decade ago. From Live At Robert Johnson to Bahnsteig 23, Serious Trouble and his own Love Pain Sunshine & Rain imprint, he's wielded his own unique, intriguing sound. Soon he wil make his return to ESP Institute, the label he released his debut album 'Artificial' with, as well as Talabot's Hivern Discs, which follows his Out Of Here EP for the imprint in 2016.
