a kaleidoscopic session from one of the uk’s best gems, wordcolour. an artist who excels in storytelling through their productions, this approach to his craft is translated in podcast 215 as the mix gently starts with stunning ambient moments before building into a masterclass of drum programming. pacing through halftime, techno and IDM, it’s an unpredictable 72 minutes with wordcolour showing us his cards — a hand dealt with authenticity as a marker of where he’s at right now as a dj and producer. 

wordcolour made his production debut on lapsus records in 2020 before heading over to fabric’s esteemed imprint houndstooth where he released ‘juno way’ - a breakthrough record as such for wordcolour. this was the beginning of a long-standing relationship with houndstooth where he also went on to release ‘bluster’ ep featuring remixes from djrum, dj python and the soft pink truth, his debut album ‘the trees were buzzing, and the grass.’ and the ratios series. on all of these records, wordcolour’s ability to create detailed, immersive soundscapes which emotionally resonated with both home listening and dancefloor moments, has shined through. continuing on this path of world building, earlier this month wordcolour released the first ep on his new label, TiHKAL, from london-based artist st. amp. a label dedicated to exploring psychedelic soundscapes which is a direction that wordcolour has been producing in recently as well as ties in with the parties he now likes to attend, TiHKAL will be a new home for tracks that land within the 150-200 / 75-100 bpm zone.

to celebrate the release, wordcolour has pulled together a mix that delves into the influences behind this new direction and we chat more about the concept of TiHKAL, approach to curation, early influences and more.

Bristol-based @k_means operates at the fringes of electronic music. It's not tempo and genre that unites their sound, but more an exploration of mood and texture underpinned by bass-heavy low ends and hypnotic rhythms. The Noods, Rinse FM and Kiosk Radio regular is also resident at Bristol's Psychotherapy Sessions and will debut at Dekmantel Festival where you should fully expect to be taken into plenty of unknown musical territory.

It is the same with their mix for us this week - a wild trip into futuristic drum patterns and interplanetary sounds that melt the mind and contort the body. There is a constant push and pull between the organic and the synthetic with tribal percussion and warped vocals brushing up with bleeping synth modulations and experimental minimalism. It's a magnetic selection that's as much an imaginary movie soundtrack as it is a dance floor escape.

A few weeks back an email landed in our inbox signposting music from a mysterious artist operating under the guise of Cleyra. We were kindly tipped off by the team at Timedance who usually know a thing or two about cutting edge electronica but even by their standards this one was far out.

However, we say that in the very best way.

Cleyra is an artist who likes to keep themselves private. The music does the talking and offers a brief insight into their psyche but that’s about it.

This mix is a tour de force demonstrating the potential future of dance and electronic music, a hectic maze of sounds which challenge and entice at both the same time.

For those two hours i rly wanted to embrace the picture a glaoting fairies-goblins complete cycle party, imagining the rite would happen in a flowery clearing deep in the middle of a giant firs forest, where those feisty creatures would then ingest some fine nuts and ravishing mushroom and start the ball by giggling swinging hovering around, until the hit arrives and the dance become more frenetic as they progressively mutate into forest parts into soil and roots and bushes, slowly loosing their contour to be part of the whole. The climax would be complete fusion, returning to being particules of the mole, flirting with univers laws, atomic gangbang. Then gently the rite wraps up as they return to their bodies, ultimate shapeshifters, fulfilled from the feeling of shortly having been together one. Return the energy to the ground and the life takes delightfully back its course
