For our next mix of the series we're delighted to welcome Middlesbrough maestro of synth, REES.

As owner-proprietor of the fantastic Paradiso Records, REES is a modern day champion of the New Beat / Post-Italo sound.

An avid producer and digger, his sets often boast eclectic treasures from across the world; from Italo, Zouk and Arabic Disco to the depths of New Beat, Wave and Body Music; a sound well encapsulated in his 2022 release on the prolific Bordello A Parigi.

'Electro punk disco', what's not to like about that? This is the name that London duo Baba Ali coined to describe their electrifying sound which takes a little bit of all the things we love here at Ransom Note and stirs them up in a big old pot.

Comprised of American musician Baba Doherty and British guitarist Nik Balchin, the group blend elements of punk funk and electro with NYC disco and no wave, that's equal parts for the dance floor and for the stage, which they're no stranger to.

They've been touring up and down the country since their debut LP dropped in 2021 and they're showing no signs of stopping anytime soon. With the release of their sophomore album imminent - a debut on Memphis Industries called 'Laugh Like A Bomb' which has been on repeat on 6Music - they join The Go! Team on tour around the UK as of this weekend. But before that they'll be making a pitstop at our own R$N residency at The Social on 10th March for an intimate live set...

Ahead of the gig, we asked Baba to give us a flavour of all his influences, which he does in fine fashion with this mix of groovy, crunchy funk, punk, synth pop, new wave and electro... Perfect fodder for your thirsty Thursday.

Baba Ali: The 'Shine A Light On' Mix

A scouse Italian or an Italian scouser - Giovanna's become a much loved staple of Liverpool's music scene. 

Best known for her monthly residency on NTS residency, which she's been helming for over four years, Gio brings a whole lot of joy with her eclectic selections that usually bounce between new wave, synth-pop, Italo, oddball disco and house jams. 

She brings other selectors along for the ride too - there's been musical cameos from the likes of Dar Disku, Amaliah, Talking Drums and fellow Scouser Macca, who dabble in the same sonics as she does.

Some of those artists have also joined her at Sisbis, the non-profit party she founded in Liverpool to help raise money for Refugee Women Connect. Though the party has taken a bit of a hiatus since the pandemic, she's had a hand in bringing the likes of Nabihah Iqbal, Carista, Donna Leake and Flo Dill up to Merseyside, and all for a great cause. 

We're happy to have her contribute to our 'Shine A Light On' series which, in typical Giovanna style, throws a load of different flavours into the mix... Approached like her radio shows (even with a lovely little intro in there) she moves through the motions from blissful new age guitars, synth-pop and leftfield disco through to sweet, soulful garage and old skool electro...

Esa is a producer, musician and DJ who has never been one to sit still. He is always working on something exciting and seems to draw strength from collaboration and the creativity of others as much as he does himself. Over the years he has released music on the likes of Highlife, Local Talk, Dekmantel, Bronswood, Endless Flight and many more – his sound evolving based upon his external influences and discoveries of late.

Based in London, he is incredibly well travelled and has worked alongside a number of musicians and bands, seeking to broaden his musical horizons and draw upon the roots of the sound and cultures which have informed his tastes.

As a DJ Esa is well versed, honing his craft on dancefloors in Glasgow where he held his first residency at the infamous Subculture. It is here that this mixtape was recorded, his return to the party earlier this year was a triumphant tour de force showcasing just how far Esa has come as an artist.

This mixtape spans a wide variety of styles and sounds but most importantly is destined to keep you moving and dancing throughout. Sometimes live sets don’t make much sense out of context, yet in this case there is something special captured in the sound which makes you feel like you are right down the front banging that old Sub Club booth.
