We love acid. You love acid. Everyone in there right mind loves acid. Luke Vibert definitely loves acid, and we've just been given the live recording of his momentous set at I LOVE ACID's Corsica Studios party to prove it. Here it is, hit play, and read our interview with I LOVE ACID founder Josh Doherty, below, whilst Vibert smacks your speakers silly.

D'Marc Cantu has been orbiting our ears for a while now. 

"Slow building, spacey jackin’ techno tracks with some nice squelchy acid lines. Fans of Basic Soul Unit would approve."  

We think he's a lot more than that but it's good jumping off point to get yourself started in the world of Mr D'Cantu. 

It was with some excitement then, when he agreed to lay down his Ransom Note mix for us. 

"I'm D’marc Cantu, I've been producing dance music in various forms for over a decade now. I reside in Ann Arbor MI, which as anyone familiar with this area should know has a rich musical history, from Iggy pop to Andrew WK and many more."

"I want to make sure if it's cool that its going to be a live set of mine? All original and what not, just not a lot of released tracks in there." We weren't really going to argue with that.

Mugwump's history stretches far... over the years he's released on labels like Kompakt, R&S and Gigolo and remixed the likes of The Asphodells, CCC - and Bob Sinclair no less. Just a cursory glance at his back catalogue illustrates the diverse nature of Mugwump's approach to production, combining a variety of influences from 80's pop, dub and new-beat with disco and techno - let's call the overarching flavour 'mutant disco'. 

Now, with Subfield, Mugwump's own label and his rather fine Leftorium clubs he's solidifying this diversity. We thought it was about time we asked him to lay down his Ransom Note mix mandate and we found out a bit more about the Mugwump. What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?

I'm not too excited by the prospective of 'recording' a mix but starting a varied 8 hours set in the morning at Panoramabar would have me in a great mood I reckon. I love that club, played there a few times for Playhouse & Kompakt, partied there every single time after I DJ'd in Berlin... It totally reminds me of the freedom we had in the Boccaccio with its ultra late closing on Monday evenings. Also last year I played in the garden of a Sao Paulo museum for around 3000 people, the setting was nuts...

Mugwump - The Ransom Note Mix

The hypnotic momentum of the night passes to the hands of DJ Three as light begins to fill sky and the new day creeps ever closer.  For forty breathless minutes we wait… until at last the sun breaks over the horizon, and a collage of verbal musings, psychedelia and ornate music fills the air.  Toying with echoes and teasing with nuance, shutters fluttering to capture the fleeting moment…a moment not soon forgotten for those who were lucky enough to be there, at sunrise on Sunday, Black Rock City, Burning Man, 2014.   And then, just as easily as we are led into that place, a whole movement of sound and energy returns the dance floor.

Timothy J. Fairplay is ace... fact. Never sitting still for a minute he's amassing a rather ridiculous aural CV of late. From being one of the founding members of the now sadly defunct Battant to Andrew Weatherall's engineer (and then going on to form The Asphodells with him) to running his own label - Crimes of the Future - with the equally excellent Scott Fraser. He also finds time to interview artists he's into for R$N from time to time including this excellent one with Legowelt. 

We've been trying to get him to do us a mix for quite some time now... and we're pleased we waited. Mr Fairplay is going through a Techno Bass phase again and this is what the mix is constructed around. We've skirted around getting down to the studio to meet Tim for some time so took this as a key to rectify that.

"The Lurid Music Ransom Note Mix, recorded live in one take at Kasseta Record Shop in Athens, using two turntables and a mixer, no laptop or CDJs, in front of a small in-store crowd. Back-to-back selections between Alex and Dimitris. Alex was running a fever so not sure how that affected the end result, hope you like it."

An unreleased track recorded in 1983 discovered in a dusty corner of the On-U tape archives. Taken from SCIENCE FICTION DANCEHALL CLASSICS, a curated selection of classics, rarities and unreleased tracks from the On-U Sound vaults by DJ & Audio Visual artist Trevor Jackson.

In some ways predicting the electro-fied sound of Neneh’s worldwide pop success with the Raw Like Sushi album, “Dead Come Alive” stems from a mid-80s period when Adrian took a production hiatus from his beloved reggae, deeply upset by the murder of his friend Prince Far I (he would later rekindle the dub flame when the opportunity arose in 1986 to work with hero Lee “Scratch” Perry). Instead he explored the possibilities of new studio technology. Early samplers and drum machines were put through their paces on work for the Tommy Boy label and remixes for the likes of Depeche Mode.

Greg Sawyer - The 'Monday Is OK' Ransom Note Mix

NSA favourite Sean Johnston brings us the second instalment of our monthly guest series with his aptly titled Hardway Bros. -  Jacobite Rising Mix

Acid House Veteran, Balearic Survivor, Hardway Bros, Reformed Techno Junkie and Freelance Disco Consultant Sean Johnston has been DJ’ing since the mid eighties and regularly travels the globe delivering his ‘Future Disco' sound to some of the worlds landmark underground club nights.  Also one half of supreme club night 'A Love From Outer Space’, he and long time friend Andrew Weatherall have been sharing their hard-earned audio finds for well over 5 years and have created a musical movement which has gained them a loyal following who travel far and wide to appreciate the pair’s extensive record collections.

His productions need no explanation with regular output on stellar labels such as Sabres of Paradise,Third Mind, Flashcomm ,Beard Science, Pointless Edits, Aniligital, History Clock, Astrolab, Luna Flicks, Throne of Blood, Correspondant & NEIN

Sean is impossible to pin down to a particular style as he is known to explore and experiment with a multitude of genres including ambient, balearica, dub, krautrock, post punk, proto house, un-disco and other curiosities that take his fancy so buckle up and prepare yourself for a lesson in how it should be done with another exceptional mix.
