Bring Down The Walls with Lakuti & Hillegonda Rietveld - Quando Quango 29/08/2021

Originally hailing from Mzansi, South Africa and firmly rooted in Manchester, DJ and producer Levi Love has become a prominent figure within the Northern city's music scene.

For over nine years he's been a resident at one of Manchester's finest music establishments, SOUP Kitchen, where he's strengthened his passion for fusing global and Euro-centric sounds. Like his selections, his own musical output is guided by these two loves; releases which form the backbone of his own label Mas O Menos, founded as a platform for cultural and musical exchanges between the UK and South-Africa.

Ahead of his appearance at Audio Farm Festival this weekend, he puts together a mix that paints a picture of the flourishing South African underground scene, showcasing music from solely South African producers, including a couple of his own tracks.

Bytes are super excited to announce the reissue of the killer 1990s electro EPs by SEM (aka Damon Baxter, who would go on to record as Deadly Avenger). The original 12”s have been out of print since they were released on J Saul Kane’s Electron Industries imprint in 1995 (Phox EP) and 1996 (The Demon EP). They have never been available digitally. With the original masters M.I.A., the tracks have been lovingly remastered from vinyl by Keith Tenniswood, who as part of Two Lone Swordsmen (alongside the late Andrew Weatherall), knows a thing or two about producing top-notch electro music. "Voyage Voyage Voyage" by DJ Salinger is not your typical mixtape; it's a subjective journey through 80's pop songs, reimagined by London-based French producer and site friend @franzkirmann. These tracks, like the iconic "Voyage voyage" by Desireless, evoke memories of summers in France, heard on radios or at local events. Kirmann's sonic treatments distort and suspend the music, creating a dreamy, distant quality that enhances themes of escapism. The result is an ambient reinterpretation of nostalgic synth pop, reminiscent of distant radio transmissions. While the essence of the original songs remains, they are transformed into a mesmerizing sonic tapestry. In essence, it's a nod to the past through a contemporary lens, akin to imagining a cover of "Voyage, voyage" by artists like Fennesz or My Bloody Valentine.

Ransom Note Records sub label Insult To Injury are delighted to welcome back analogue techno pioneers Buran with their second full length excursion for the label, in the form of The Hunter EP. Born of the mechanical machinations of Joe Wretham and Ian Scott, their latest instalment of furious face melters is aimed squarely at the post midnight dancefloor, bubbling away with squelchy 303 potions and black magic beats.

First single, Alnitak, opens the EP and immediately we’re confronted with Buran’s inimitable modus operandi; slash and burn Acid Techno with a scorched earth ethos. A full frontal assault of acidic sorcery, lobbing techno bangers over the ramparts as the castle walls are pummelled. Hold onto your hats, it’s not for the faint of heart!

Alnilam is next out the gate, ricocheting off the armour plating of its enemies, bouncing along and razing everything in its path to the ground. We’re delivered brief respite from the brutality with the addition of some celestial vocal edits, whose angelic timbres provide juxtaposition to the synthetic onslaught. As the smoke clears, the penultimate Mintaka glides into view. Wonderfully barbed, but gloriously lush chords propel the track forward, over a bed over automaton drum machines and staccato blips, bleeps and swirling noise.

Rounding off, ITI are hyped to have the mighty Void Complet on remix duties. Fresh off the back of his breakthrough release on CHOBU Records, London based super producer Chog Burley takes Alnitak and reimagines it in his own image. Launching with a rich, metallic arpeggio, we’re drawn into an analogue dream, before realising that’s all a ruse. We have been lulled into a false sense of security, because we’re about to be clattered around the head by that savage 303 riff from the original. We’re caught in the crossfire as glitched vocals and bit crushed acid lines vie for dominance. This correspondent knows not how to fully encapsulate the terror of this remix… watch out dance floors around the world!
