Theo Parrish grew up on Chicago house parties. He went to art school in Kansas City, and then moved to Detroit. His eclectic DJ sets in Detroit in the late ’90s and early in this millennium are legendary. 

“Love of the music should be the driving force of any producer, performer or DJ. Everything else stems from that core, that love. With that love, sampling can become a tribute; An expansion on ideas long forgotten, reconstruction, collage. Using the same understanding openly and respectfully can turn DJing into a spiritual participation. Who else sounds like Larry Heard? In the late 1980s, The Chicago house producer was one of the first artists – initially as a part of Fingers, Inc., and then as a solo act – to truly stamp their own unique aesthetic onto the nascent style of electronic dance music. Favouring lush instrumentation, foggy chords and dreamy melodies over the more mechanic pounding of many of his counterparts, he inspired the "deeper" sounds of the midwest's second wave, and generations of young clubbers elsewhere around the world.

By this point he is now known as arguably one of the most experienced and talented disc jockeys of a generation and has been essential to the expansion of club music and its culture over the last thirty years. His sound sees him tastefully blend funk, soul and eclectic disco selections alongside modern day house and dance music in a manner which most will never be able to achieve. Championed by leftfield scenes and house music aficionado's alike. Next weekend he will take to the stage at Farr festival who we have been lucky enough to collaborate on to gather this incredibly exclusive mix.

Maurice Fulton: The Ransom Note Mix

To have Marcellus Pittman as our guest for a RH store mix with records he has never heard before was pretty electrifying. The living legend from Detroit took the opportunity to have a proper browse in the shop and see where it would go…  

As a production artist and selector, Pittman has helped to define an integral part of the Detroit sound. When other children were playing combat with G.I. Joe action figures in the early 80’s, Detroit native Marcellus “Malik” Pittman was playing his radio at maximum volume, listening to the sounds of “the Wizzard” and the “Electrifying Mojo”, in addition to the jazz outputs of Rosetta Hines.

In 1993, Malik released his initial work of production with local Hip-Hop collective “Home Grown”. Shortly thereafter, he released “Essential Selections, Vol. 1” on the Sound Signature label, headed by Theo Parrish. In 1998, Malik forged a working relationship with Rick Wilhite, Theo Parrish and Kenny “Moodymann” Dixon, collectively known as the 3 Chairs. Pittman is currently heading his own label, Unirhythm, which will release his upcoming projects.
