On Friday the 17th of October 2014, the TECHNO living legend himself, Jeff Mills, played at a TECHNO institution in Melbourne, The Mercat downstairs, formerly know as Deep 11. Jeff Played for the Stable Music crew for TECHNO series of parties called Capacity! I was lucky enough to warm up for Jeff on this special night and here is that set.

"This mix comes from my sets warming up for LCD Soundsystem. When on tour I might do four to eight shows in a run and I like to try to make each show different and not play the same set every night. Sometimes I play to the crowd, sometimes I play for myself but often times the band will have the audio piped into the dressing rooms and this set comes from specifically playing to them. I’ve played a few different versions of this set, but anytime I played a synth/coldwave set I always got a great response from the band so I wanted to record something to remember before I moved on." -Marcus

Hot on the heels of the acclaimed Tears Maker Chant 12” LP, illustrious French Electronic duo Froid Dub are back on Ransom Note Records with an interstellar remix package. Featuring the inimitable talents of Richard Fearless, Lena Willikens, Rug Dug, Tia Cousins, Zillas On Acid, Tolouse Low Tax, Timothy Clerkin and Vacant Heads, there is a little something special for all occasions on this colossal record. Slip into something comfortable and sit back.

Opening proceedings, Mr Richard Fearless starts us off with a bang with his remix of Control. Or, indeed, a warp. Bubbly Dubby bass abound, frenetic, IDM-esque beats skip along underneath the low end pummelling before giving way to luxuriant chord progressions. A perfect balance of light and shade, this is a weapons grade banger.

Next up, Lena Willikens puts her own distinctive imprint on Digital Pond. Upping the bpm and the pressure, this dark, synthy, Lofi safari is an anxiety attack is audio format. But an exceptionally pleasurable one!

Lead single comes from Strange Affair with their mix of Just One. Who are Strange Affair, we hear you ask? They are the exquisite combination of two big hitters, Ruf Dug and Tia Cousins! We’re delighted to introduce their maiden voyage as a production pair, and they make waves here with a frenzied reimagining of the original.

Elsewhere, Philly Chug Champions Zillas On Acid turn On The Nose into a dance floor stomper of epic proportions. Tolouse Low Trax takes on Terri’s Dub, sliding into a pair of laidback slacks and sipping a cocktail on the showery terrace, his insouciant approach will have you dancing in the most relaxed way imaginable.

Timothy Clerkin remixes LP lead track Tears Maker, which in Froid Dub’s very own words is “like been catapulted back to a DJ Alfredo mix at Pacha Club in 92”. Hands in the air! Finally, our old friends Oliver Ho and Christian Donaghey (Autumns) team up as Vacant Heads to undertake Tears Maker too, moulding it into an angular, industrial dirge, brimming with sleaze, distortion and grimy 808s. You have been warned!

The idea for the record title came before the music even existed as Touch was spending an increasing amount of time in airports while touring. In her own words: ""It felt like I waste a large part of my life waiting for the next show to come, to entertain and perform my music and build timeless moments with others. This waiting, the slowly ticking time at the gate, was in complete contrast to what I want to do as an artist: to be in flux, to create things that will last forever. The airport, as a busy hub, was like a symbol of this ambivalence. And a reminder: every second, whether waiting or on the move, I have to accept that I am fading, that my creative power, my face, and my body are fading. As a (performing) artist, everything feels like a strange contrast. While you want to stay true to yourself and speak authentically from the soul, you are also expected to appear forever young, and powerful. Artists are often wanted to distract people, but creating this art forces me to confront my own transience. I feel the struggle to fit into this powerful artificial framework that the world has set and the desire to break free from it.

‘Aging at Airports’ plays with the ambiguity and ambivalence of being true to ourselves. Those true andhonest emotions are the theme of the record. The vocals and lyrics channel those emotions within theartificial surroundings of synths, digital sounds, and clean mixing. This theme is quite dramatic but Touch maintains a sense of playfulness. The record doesn’t attempt to be too serious and super dark but still comes from that deep place of Touch’s soul that has to handle this stretch.
From the opening track the album is a synth showcase that fully embraces Jennifer’s range as a vocalist and composer. ‘Aging at Airports’ takes listeners through a drifting emotional journey through EBM EBMinspired tracks (Behavior and Ceiling), drone pop (Walls of Patience and Anthem) and minimal beats (Dripping and Wars & Blood Red Roses) to close out with a track made for the darkest dance floors (Rumble (Defiance)).

Balearic sounds and Mediterraneanwarmth are the inspirations for Bruno Belissimo’s Bordello A Parigi debut. Drawing on disco, house and funk, Ottimo! is a four tracker of electronic exuberance with Belissimo’s musical ability and range immediately spilling from the speakers. Guitar strings curve around synthlines in the title piece, percussive textures giving way to the mantra-like refrain of “Ottimo!” Thick bass echoes into beaming keys for “Meduse.” Bright notes cascade, grooves  melting with vocoder lyrics as classic disco tones are reimagined in this modern mirrorball medley. Organic rhythms introduce the flip. “Mirage” opens to ripples of bongos and toms as a loose structure takes hold. Hedonistic chants rise to a shimmering chord, kicks and snares funnelling the building energy as bold blasts and samples shriek with delight. “Las Piramides de Ibiza” brings the quartet to a close. Clean drum patterns support joyous notes, a machine dipped voice calling time.
