“One song every two weeks for one year” (from November 1, 2023, to November 6, 2024, to be more precise)”, that’s what skilled and eclectic French producer Julien Porhel aka Blutch intends with his bold “Escaped Songs” series. Expect everything: From Dubstep to Breakbeats, from Deep House to Leftfield, from Electronica to Tough-To-Pigeonhole stuff, seasoned with shards of Italo Disco, Techno, IDM & whatnot, the mood of the moment is his guide, no rules are holding the flow of his creativity and the result is a wide-ranging joyride through many of his influences. With dance-floor fillers and introspective trippy cuts, Julien definitely pushes existing boundaries and genre definitions with his highly well-tailored sonority.

The track we hand-picked to premiere is a true ode to synthesizers: “Deléon” opens the third volume of Blutch’s saga and heralds the temperament of the EP – the most atmospheric of the series so far. (A plethora of) arpeggios everywhere set the tone and the always-present emotion of his compositions reaches another level with the tons of beautiful cosmic synth leads spread throughout the theme.

DJ duo Studio Batsumi (aka Federico Bigonzetti & Marta Paccagnella) reveal details for the first release of their self-titled joint label venture with five-track EP Cosmicomics. The first musical outing from the pair’s new imprint, Studio Batsumi are set to release their original records via the label, as well as offering a platform for burgeoning artists to release their music. With a focus on analogue, for the first few months all releases will be vinyl only (exclusively via Bandcamp). Making the natural step up from selectors and musicians to bona fide label bosses, founding the label marks a new beginning for the pair.

Known for their genre-defying DJ sets, regularly appearing at London’s most reputable listening bars such as Spiritland, Brilliant Corners and Supermax, as well as club previous shows at The Ton of Brix, The Jago, Cafe 1001 and The Waiting Room, the Studio Batsumi imprint plans to follow suit, genre-fluid while sonically defined, much like the pair’s DJ offering.

With the launch EP Cosmicomics written and produced by Federico alongside Parisian guitarist, producer and sound engineer Maxime Obadia, the varying musical backgrounds of the two artists demonstrates this versatile aesthetic for the label expertly, with Fede rooted in electronic and Maxime’s rock background working in harmony on the EP. Combining live instruments with drum machines, synths and a host of genre influences. Artists such as such The Pilotwings, GHF, Kalbata, YuSu, and L’Éclair have been cited as influences on the first EP.

Featuring three original tracks, a remix from esteemed Turkish DJ and producer Jonny Rock and one of Federico’s own versions on B2, the tracks range from bassline-driven downtempo chuggers, dreamy guitar riffs, trippy arpeggios and distorted, wonky pads for a rich and eclectic sound palette to work on and off the dancefloor. Texturised layers of live instrumentation and analogue equipment further enhance the organic and unique quality of Studio Batsumi sound.

With an artist-first approach, Studio Batsumi releases will be on a limited 300-press run, sold exclusively via Bandcamp. To celebrate the launch of the label, on Saturday 13 April the duo will host an in store at Hidden Sounds in Dalston, with the party carrying on at Brilliant Corners where the pair will play a special all-night-long set.

PREMIERE : Antonio Miele - Cold Blooded Romantic

He's back. After a break that felt like an eternity, Cuthead has finally awoken from his creative beauty sleep to check up on his home base, Uncanny Valley, with his new album, THE DETOUR. 

The album is spread over four parts to avoid overexciting everyone's attention span. And he's not coming back as a cheapskate since the album is full of gifts that true Cuthead fans desire. In other words, he does what he does best: Blasting out slick tracks that oscillate between laid-back underground hip-hop, sampling heavy house and vintage acid, but with enough surprises along the way. The tracks were created over the last few years, including some jams from his live set that he made while travelling or in a hotel.

As soon as the typical cosy, warm chords kick in during the INTRO of The Detour Part 1, you immediately feel at home again in Cuthead's world, where it's always Saturday afternoon, and laid-back jams drip out of the speakers (at least on two of the four parts). On top of that, Chester Watson from St. Louis (one of Cuthead's absolute favourite rappers) provided a feature. With his distinctive voice and dreamy flow, Chester explains in not one but two versions of PROCEED how to carry on and stay relaxed despite adverse circumstances. On the other hand, TOUR DE FRANCE is a trapstrumental for the masses in which a hi-that thunderstorm is intertwined with a wind sample that constantly twists around itself.

The second in Cuthead's tetralogy is what we can undoubtedly call a house monster. It starts with a track named after one of Cuthead's special skills: MPC JAM. With its filter attacks and unmistakable drops, the track builds on Cuthead's great house floor fillers, leaving no ass standing still. SUNDAY 5 PM enters the floor as a bird of paradise with room-filling disco strings before SPACED OUT follows with Theo Parrish-like grooves. MIDNIGHT ROUTE closes The Detour Part 2 with broken beats and an unusual but irresistible electronic bassline.

The opener of the third part once again praises the old promise of the House Nation, not without ZUBU being refined with the very own Cuthead spin, which puts the track on a techno floor as well. POWER ACID lives up to its name and comes across as a classic warehouse acid screw that takes every rave to the edge. Understatement is also not required. PARTY LIKE IT'S 99. After all, every Saturday afternoon is followed by a Saturday night a piano house bomb with a little ounce of acid always goes down well on such an occasion

The final chapter of THE DETOUR opens promisingly and in typical Cuthead style with the aptly titled BONKERS and the kind of weirder head-nodding beat that only the Dresdenresident can squeeze out of his samples. In LISOLEIL, Malone the Chemist drops his lines over what feels like an aquatic jazz foundation. Cuthead spotted the Canadian rapper when he posted a freestyle under a tweet from Flying Lotus. After that, the snares are turned up again at the FOXY FOXY sample fest. OUTRO is almost epic by Cuthead standards and could easily be the soundtrack to a modern Giallo film. The album is accompanied by beautiful animations created in collaboration between illustrator Robert Deutsch and animator Tobias Kramer.

Part of the vibrant City Boy Lounge party in Kansai for over a decade, Ko Yang has already made waves with his acclaimed EP "Pony" released on New York's Bliss Point label in 2022. Now, he joins forces with Kyoto-based NC4K for another remarkable release.

Each track on this EP is a testament to Ko Yang's masterful touch, with intricate and emotive sequences that intertwine seamlessly with the driving basslines, creating an invitation to dance.

As a producer he has released on the likes of Trax Records, Relief and Crimes of the Future. He has recently launched a new label inspired by the early days of The Musik Box and Ron Hardy - Gavin Guthrie was the first artist enlisted to appear.
