Known for his hi-tech AV shows and multidisciplinary projects, London-based producer patten connects the dots between different mediums, working with music, film, design, installation and live performance. 

Having had a hand in a myriad of projects including work for Caribou’s Jiaolong label & his Daphni alias, Nathan Fake and LA's MoMA, as well as working on solo AV shows at the ICA and Tate Modern and an immersive tour with SHAPE Platform last year, as a producer patten has crafted his own distinct take on contemporary club rhythms. 

In contrast to last year's FLEX on his own 555-5555 imprint, his most recent album GLOW takes a different form; beatless throughout, it matches washes of lamenting synths with stirring atmospheres, metallic riffs and shoegaze guitars.

Off the back of the release we got patten on board for a mix and in typical atypical fashion he turned in a lush 40 minute new mini-album of glistening ambience instead. Mailed over with just the text 'New trax. Scuzzed out Ariel Pink frags.', it’s entirely made from processed instrumental fragments of Ariel Pink music… go figure!

patten: The 'Monday Is OK' Mix

GAIKA (@gaikasays) has been hailed as one of Britain’s most vital rappers. His confrontational music — and writing — is proudly Black, addressing as it does issues of the immigrant experience, gentrification and violence. It’s been called everything from gothic dance hall to industrial electronics for the way it distills Caribbean traditions and the contemporary sound of London, while he sees himself more of an afropunk with eyes very much on the future. Next to a full length and a number of EPs on Warp, this month he has collaborated with NAAFI affiliates on his new EP 'Seguridad' — which is out now —, while his collective The Spectacular Empire continues with its series of streams aimed at celebrating Black culture and raising money for Black causes. 

Over the course of an hour on this week’s mix, GAIKA serves up a positive musical selection. There are times when things get impossibly smooth, but pained passages often follow. It means one minute glossy r&b and purple funk fest you up, then gorgeous original instrumentals and sombre strings bring you back down. Complex and wide-ranging, it’s a mix that goes way beyond club functionality, instead managing to tell the sort of personal stories that real mixtapes should.

We are pleased to host a mix by one of our favourite creatives in berlin who mesmerises with a mix that touches every corner with heart and uniqueness .

NM DJ is a recording and printing artist based in Berlin. Her vocal practice developed out of writing and reciting poetry at readings organized by TABLOID Press – a publishing house she co-founded with Zoe Darsee in 2014. She has collaborated as a vocalist with musical artists such as Perila, Special Guest DJ, Soho Rezanejad, and Ulla Straus, and in November 2019 performed a live set with exael on Berlin’s HÖR radio. As a designer, she has produced album graphics for labels including wood//work, Experiences Ltd., Uzuri, and Lillerne Tapes.
