Phil Gerus first burst into our eardrums about half a year ago with such a sexy, dissipated sound, it was almost impossible not to take notice. Here we are, six months and one Yeezus album later, happily presenting to you our seventy-sixth Truancy Volume from a man responsible for bringing back those those sensual 80's vibes with tunes that are absolutely brimming with rhythm and funk. Phil has had what seems to be a rather impressive year; after self-published tunes like 'Milk and Honey' on Fused Lab and 'Ordinary Things' on Rhymast achieved high levels of love, the release of a six track EP was literally music to our ears. His 'Based On Misunderstandings' EP on Sonar Kollektiv showed such smooth production and oozed with such sex appeal, it was commendable to see his follow up EP, 'Rainy On The Brightside', live up to the previous one. Gerus tells us of how he spends days in search of "sexy harmonies", as he calls them, and of his Truancy Volume, that captures the “crazy nights and lazy days” mood. Presenting to us a mix that draws from his deep-running musical background influenced by all the Jazz greats, Phil Gerus has created a Volume so nostalgic and easy to listen to, we challenge you not to become as enamored with him as we are.

This track opens the Outlier album. It’s built from tension, that kind of magnetic pull on the dancefloor where everything’s unspoken, but understood. A little sweat, a little danger, that flicker of eye contact that changes everything. No introductions. No questions. Just energy.

I wanted something French house inspired, but not obvious. Clean mix, sexy groove, no vinyl static. I created a conversation with the vocal and sax responding to each other, almost like foreplay and that’s where the track finally lets go.

This one's for the ones who never needed to ask.

A classically trained pianist he was raised with music in his soul and has sinced developed a love for the productuion of dancefloor delight and a wide ranging musical odyssey. A relative newcomer he has received wide scale support from a variety of labels and has been supported by the likes of Tensnake, Marcel Vogel, Tom Noble and George Fitzgerald. 

Between obscure samples, disco glory, golden house cuts and raucous edits he has quickly established himself as one of the most interesting producers to emerge from Russia in recent years.

Especial is delighted to present Phil Gerus to the label, with his personal ode to relationships, Still Blind.  After acclaimed boogie, disco and italo tinged 12”s for the likes of Public Release, Superior Elevation, Leng and Sonar Kollektiv, here we present Gerus’ first solo full vocal performance - eschewing samples as a natural development.

Progressing confidently from his early excursions, Still Blind finds funk’d rhodes, Prophet 5 synth, guitar, slap bass and Linn drum all wrapped around a killer pots’n’pans groove, then sent to vintage cassette.  His heartfelt vocal, give a knowing, memory inducing cry that marries past and present as some Downtown NYC meets Europop, discoidiant dream.  

In best presenting Gerus’ first vox it seemed natural to ask Especial family member, friend and confidant Mr Philip Lauer to once again get behind the mixing desk.   Still Blind is just made for his melodic wunder; with an increasing penchant for all things synth-pop, his ubiquitous arpeggio heavy but beautiful tight, rising hats, nuanced dub programming, hands high strings, plus a way with melody that brings the reversion to dance floor transcendence.  

The 80s bromance complete, the flip is handed on a dubplate(r) to label remixer, designer and visionary, Jamie Paton to turn out another of his deep, drudge, dub outs.  Coming as both vocal remix and dub – again conjoined in “discomix” style for the brave (dead) heads – this is Paton at his brooding, echo laden best.   Rising and falling, Gerus’ refrain acting as dub melody around symphonic heavy bass.  Tune in and dub out.

Manoel Germano Filho (better known as Germannu) was born into a family of cocoa farm owners on January 11th, 1955 in Linhares, Espirito Santo, Brazil. He was the second born of three children, but refusing to buy into the stereotype of the forgotten middle child, it took just a few guitar chords, learnt at the age of 15, to start him on his musical path. (The chords were taught to Manoel by his much-revered older sister, Germana, which she, in turn, had learned playing religious songs at Catholic school).

Manoel started his foray into education by following in his family’s footsteps, earning his agronomy degree at the Federal University of Viçosa in the state of Minas Gerais. Yet it was music rather than soil that held his heart, and after a chance meeting with Milton Nascimento, one of Brazil’s biggest musical icons — both back then and today — he threw himself into the Minas music scene, burgeoned as it was by student movements and local music festivals.

Manoel’s attempts to bring his music to the general public were abruptly derailed by the death of his father. Shortly after graduating, his dreams were put on hold and he found himself back in his hometown of Espirito Santo taking care of the family’s business affairs. It didn’t take long for though for the music to win over, and soon after he invested a considerable sum of his earnings in musical instruments and sound equipment, as well as a mobile trailer which he used as a tour bus, setting out to perform in towns in the region.

In 1984, Manoel, now Germannu, met the composer, arranger, vocalist, and guitarist Jorge “Jóia” Olímpio at a show in Linhares, and a month later threw caution to the wind, moved to Rio and found himself crashing at Jorge’s house while putting down his roots. Over the following days and weeks, the recording of Germannu’s debut LP began in earnest, starting with his songs Lavoura, Fale De Mim, and Hei De Amar.

Jorge’s help was crucial. Although Germannu had certain melodies in mind and chord structures around which he wanted to build the songs, he hadn’t yet developed how the melodies would play out, nor decided how exactly the chord sequences would go.

The pre-production was done at Jorge’s home, before they moved over to the now-defunct Estúdio Rio near the Laranjeiras viaduct to flesh things out. Jorge Jóia called on his contacts and brought in musicians he was sure would work, including a bassist and former bandmate named Borjalo, with whom he had previously played with in a band that was put together by the legendary organ player, Lafayette. Drummer, Paulinho Black (ex-Banda Black Rio), and pianist, Moisés Pedrosa, were also part of the team, as was the fabulous Jorge Cardozo — who transcribed Jorge Jóia’s arrangements.

Sadly, Germannu is no longer with us, but the lasting groove of his music remains eternal and continues to bring a special kind of joy to those that hear it.

So, where does Notes On A Journey fit into all of this? Jürgen von Knoblauch — a longtime member of Jazzanova and Sonar Kollektiv, amongst others, is introduced on our site simply as Record Collector — met Junior Santos, a musician, drummer, and Brazilian music aficionado extraordinaire, when buying records from him. Junior convinced Jürgen to buy a record by one Celso Rubinstein — which led to a NOAJ reissue (which if you haven’t discovered already, you should). The collaboration between knowledge fount and collector was fruitful enough that Junior and Jürgen decided to work on more reissues. This Germannu record is their first complete collaboration, with more on the way.
