Aboutface is firstly a composer/live performer and secondly a DJ, hailing from East London he steps up for the next release on Amirali’s newly founded imprint ‘Dark Matters’. 

Drawing upon both the sociological and environmental landscape as creative inspiration, Aboutface uses his background in fine art and painting to help inform his productions. All the last three years music has been inspired by a thousand mile plus journey through Eastern Europe and around the coastal regions of the UK; each song using the environmental recordings of a different region or city as the creative starting point. 

He says "I like to combine field recording, acoustic and analogue sounds to articulate small stories in each song. My creative influences range from Pierre Schaeffer, Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Claude Debussy, through to James Holden, Four Tet and Boards of Canada.”

The complexity and broad fields of influence are evident in ‘The Hazy Path To Misunderstanding’. The EP is made up of three tracks, ‘The Hazy Path To Misunderstanding’ is a meandering and laid back percussive track whilst ‘My Benevolent Shackle’ exudes a darker intensity. Lastly Tin Man steps up for a remix of ‘The Hazy Path To Misunderstanding’ adding more frenetic energy to the track and upping the pace. 

Aboutface’s compositions are intelligent, and with a debut album planned for next year slotting into the eclectic Dark Matters' growing roster, the future looks bright.

Music From Mullets #28 is an episode about MUSICA DEL SUD – We’re talking about artists and labels from the south of Italy: Sicily, Calabria and Napels. You will notice that these songs are sung in Neapolitan, a language spoken by 7,5 million people mainly in Southern Italy which is is closely related to Italian, but it has evolved its own unique characteristics like different pronunciation of certain consonants, a tendency to drop unstressed vowels at the end of words and unique verb conjugations. Neapolitan has a rich history and culture, especially in literature and song. It is considered a source of pride for its speakers.
I’ve been collecting vinyl records from Southern Italy for a while now and still find it hard to distinguish where exactly these records are from, as there is very little known about those labels, that sometimes only released a handful of records. The first hour of the show features music from the Sicilian labels Sea Musica, Giesse and Step record, but also other small Italian labels with uncertain origin like BOOM, Gulp, Near, Aper, New Si-Re, Big Sound Record, Power Sound and so on. 
One half from Catania and one half from Naples – Roberta Maugeri and Felice Angiero @angierofelice as Granita di Fichi are collecting vinyl records from the south of Italy and have prepared a guest mix of obscure sound from Sicily and the Mediterranean Sea that makes every collector of that genre sweat.

Faces are a peculiar thing, when you spend an hour or two of your life thinking about it. While we all have fairly similar bodies, on the most-part, our faces are where the differences really show and there's more going on with our facial characteristics than any other part of our bodies. Faces are what we use to show every last little detail of our life - whether that be in the form of crow's feet, laughter lines or the fact that we had spaghetti bolognese for dinner last night.

That's why we reckon Aboutface is on to something good. Well, that and the fact that he's making some cracking music and we're very happy indeed to be bringing this new one from him your way. He's even been so kind as to share some words with us and describe his sound for you;

"My artist name is Aboutface, I'm a sound-artist, phonographist, sound-designer, painter and occasionally a musician. Using my name, this is how I would [currently] describe my 'sound' for the EP and upcoming album; for some entires I have included some formative musical influences to paint the picture an alternative way.

Atmosphere; the environment and all sound as music.

Unconventional methods of music expression or creating modes.
