In its 25-minute entirety, Dersu synthesizes sounds from the mountainous range of the orient, the flat dunes of the scorching Sahara desert, the swampy lands of New Orleans to Berlin techno scenes into afresh air. Dersu EP is a musical fabric woven with ruminants of jazz, trance-inducing Afro-percussions, obscured vocals, soothing chimes and horns, sublime funk basslines underneath well crafted house beats. Sometimes a track gets played in the Ransom Note office that everyone just wants to hear again and again, not because we all have musical amnesia and need to be reminded what it is we do here, but because it's really, really good. Kudaushe (ft. Kudaushe Matimba) by Afriquoi has been one of those tracks. The vocal melody is so evocatively wistful, the percussion provides a beat that makes your feet just do their own thing, and organic sounds convey the meaning of this project as a means to explore many of the musician's varied heritages in a poignant and beautiful way. Yes, it's worth writing a cheesy sentence like that about it. Fine, if you don't like us being cheesey, how about we write our usual old fare eh? Ok, so, we like biscuits and cats. Cats like cat biscuits too. But biscuits feelings are not generally known. Happy now? No, neither are we. 
Afriquoi is a project based in London with musicians of all kinds of backgrounds, influences and experiences. Congo-born guitarist Fiston Lusambo is known affectionately in the group as ‘Papa Fiston’ and Kora player Jally Kebba Suso was born in Gambia into a family of traditional musicians and storytellers of the Manding empire that can trace itself back 74 generations. Born in London of mixed Jamaican, French, Ghanaian and Scottish Heritage, vocalist Andre Espeut was greatly inspired by the acid house sounds he encountered in his youth, whereas percussionist André Marmot grew up listening to garage, drum and bass, hiphop and jazz in London before he started learning West African percussion. Producer, Musical Director and band leader Nico Bentley was a live producer and bass player for Seal in the 90s.
The album Kolaba is coming out 11th September. Safe to say, we're pretty excited about this project!

I was honoured when Pierre Chrétien asked me to do a remix of the single "Parasite" just around  the "Manifesto" album release.
This version was only previously released on a promo CD that I'm aware of and has never been publicly available.
In a recent conversation with Pierre I asked is he was cool with me putting it up on my Soundcloud for "you all" and he was in.  I then spoke with label head of "Do Right! Music", John Kong, to make sure everything was cool on his end and he was down.

The Souljazz Orchestra - Parasite (lifeboogie Remix)

Founded in 2018 by dj and producer Deni-Shain – the man behind acclaimed compilations Space Echo and Pop Makossa -, Atangana Records is the logical follow-up to more than 20 years of travel, constantly on the look out for new artists and music around the world. As a « tropicalist globetrotter », in this new project Deni-Shain, in partnership with Thomas Vicente, co-owner of the french restaurant Le Verre Volé aims to dig, reproduce & transmit cross-cultural music, usually unreachable and/or less known by the public.
The goal is simple : to share the love of music and to rediscover the pleasure of voicings, percussions and sadly forgotten harmonies, whether you find yourself in a jam packed club or the intimacy of your home.
Atangana’s first releases will be looking at the Caribbean’s Islands, especially into Haiti with the reissue (on may 4th) – highly expected by various diggers – of the acclaimed single « Divizion » by singer Fedia Laguerre. Originally released in 1981, this first 12" will come with a Voilaaa remix and an instrumental cut exclusively based on the additional work by the french afro collective.

Kaleta & Akoya Afrobeat - The Spirit of Fela is Alive & Well   Afro Boogie edit

Lisbon is a puzzle of images, a labyrinth of sounds, a great landscape for the most improbable encounters, a European capital filled with Africa. This is the starting point for Meu Kamba Três, Rocky Marsiano’s seventh album. 
The heavily sample-based production methods that were so present in the sounds of previously released Meu Kamba (2014) and Meu Kamba Vol. Dois (2016) are now naturally replaced and upgraded by his beatsmith touch with a fresh approach. 

Meu Kamba Três was recorded between Lisbon and Luanda, Amsterdam and Maputo, featuring collaborations with artists such as Sagaz, Selma Uamusse (Mozambique), Prince Wadada (Angola), Milton Gulli (Mozambique) and Karlon and instrumentalists such as the percussion master Toni and Nelson da Costa (veteran guitar player from Guiné-Bissau who has played for many Guinean and Cape Verdean bands in the 80s and 90s). Also featuring on the album is Sr Alfaiate, one of Portugal’s most notorious scratch DJs. 

With Lisbon’s very own vibes as a source of main inspiration – where semba and funana, samba, kuduro and kizomba mix with hip-hop, fado, soul and house into hybrid musical forms that make us travel to the past and to the future – Meu Kamba Três is an ambitious album by Rocky Marsiano and to that effect he has brought forward all of his past as a hip-hop head, producer, DJ, MC and above all a rhythm lover. So that he could musically transmit the sense of community that has always been so present throughout his 20+ year long career into new tracks for the dancefloor.
