Leeds-based producer Krotone, takes the listener on a journey through the past, present and future of underground dance music, as he pays homage to his home city with Stranger, a 5-track EP on Of Paradise that traverses the outer limits of UK club music.

EP opener Just Can’t, is a stripped-back house track, powered by a raw and bouncy kick, flavoured with infectious vocals, whispering hi-hats and warm dub textures. Following this is title track Stranger, an intoxicating dose of swaggering club music that sits somewhere between off-kilter house and future-focused garage. Rolling kicks and wonky percussion are interwoven with sharp stabs and a vocal hook dripping with attitude.

Kicking off the B-side is Have You, an alluring and euphoric slice of early 90s rave nostalgia updated for 2021. Swirling pads, trademark drum work and another perfectly engineered vocal hook, all work together to capture the magic found in the heart of the dance floor. Progress pushes things into more tribal territory, with its raw, tight percussion, pulsating bassline and smokey pad work, that, when brought together, offer a moment of clarity in an uncertain world.



Rounding off the release is Resolute, a dubbed-out, spacey affair that employs bouncy kicks, rolling percussion and crystalline pads to maximum effect. A richly textured and blissful sign-off to an EP that further cements Krotone’s status as one-to-watch.

Precision engineered for RS Turbo systems and word-of-mouth basement raves, Stranger is a crowd-moving, yet intimate journey through the heart of the laser tunnel.

D.Tiffany's Planet Euphorique has become somewhat a gravitational pull for the sonispheres hotbed of talent for the last few years, drumming up a tangible level of anticipation around each release. This time round it's Unknown Mobile, who has come fresh off the back of his well received yet uncharacteristically downtempo and left-field album on Pacific Rhythm. Perhaps unexpectedly, he dives back into darker and more club focused territories with appropriately named 'Mobile Sorcery', a murky, spellbinding five tracker and perhaps his most face-melting release to date. After announcing on Twitter that this would be his last release for a little while due to educational commitments, this is one to hold close.

Introducing the flip is "Heavenly Depression" which flaunts unconventional rhythmic themes whilst highlighting the power of melody. This cut is one which accurately depicts it’s title, pulling on the struggle of your emotions through an ever-progressing lead woven tightly over sweeping pads.

Maybe no surprise from an artist who cites among his inspirations “the lush greenery of the Pacific Northwest,” Flora FM’s productions spill over with colour and vibrance. Recognisably part of an emerging tradition that seems to be North America’s answer to UK breaks culture, Flora FM’s latest release on Exotic Robotics continues the label’s run of playful, melody-rich dance music while folding in extra punch on tracks like Bronze Teeth and Magic Pebbles.

We feature, Softest Moon which rounds off the record in style. It's probably the most traditionally 'club ready' in structure of the bunch - kicking things off with a solid yet familiar bottom end, top end loop combo. The flicks and extra terrestrial nuances are something you'll be a custom to if au fait with Flora's otherworldly production style; but when this is met with the surging synth line - the melody's combine, creating a certified sonic treat.

To close out a brilliant year from R.A.N.D Muzik recordings; RM241220. Back when we spoke to label boss Reece Walker in the summer he spoke on his appreciation for compilations; "I just really enjoy them. I feel like a good compilation is just such a good record. A different style in every part of the record"

The final compilation of 2020 for R.A.N.D features Carmel and Salomo as well as DJ Detox, both fresh of white hot releases on the label. Bufiman whose full length released on Dekmantel earlier this year and last but not least Roza Terenzi.

Katie Campbell's breakout year has been disrupted and discharged by much of the pandemic. Regardless, in 2020 she recorded potentially the best RA mix we at Mantissa have ever heard, as well as releasing a full length awesome album on Planet Euphorique which sold out across all corners of the internet almost instantly.

The sound and style she has crafted, created and choreographed for herself is ever-present in her addition to this compilation; 'Sit On My Interface'.  A head churning burner, thumping-ly soothing and destined for rocking ruckus clubs when life returns to normal.
