Their mission was of their own choosing, as was their path. It was a journey of exploration and discovery, without rules or obligations, but it was imperative that they kept a record of every encounter and experience beyond the atmosphere. They'd imagined what might be above them in space, what strange creatures could lurk on far off planets... Nobody really knew what lay amongst the stars or in the furthest reaches of the cosmos, but maybe they would be the very first to find out. 

London-based DJ T Dunn has just shared his label Timehri's biggest project to date. Hand in hand with close label affiliate DJ Perception, a pioneering force in the UKG underground and the mind behind Timehri's first ever release, they've been working hard over the last year and a half to bring Perception's album to life.

A concept LP, Journey To The Star imagines a voyage through space "guided by a faint starlight in the outer reaches, beamed back to earth for your listening pleasure". The first of its kind, the release showcases Perception's musical prowess and solidifies his position as a forward-thinking force in the UK Garage world, who seamlessly manages to bridge the past and the future of the sound.

A heavy knock resounded through the house, then came the door bell reverberating loudly off the walls. They hadn't been waiting long, perhaps five minutes or so but impatience had already started to get the better of them. Without warning the door suddenly swung open with a tremendous thud, yet no-one waited to greet them on the other side.

Slowly and cautiously they entered the house and immediately found themselves in one enormous room, so vast you could barely make out the other side. It was completely empty, making it feel all the more cavernous. Would the person who extended this invitation make themselves known soon? Only time would tell.

Chouk Bwa & The Ångströmers is the brain child of a group of musicians and producers from two opposite ends of the world. Connected by a shared love of rhythm and psychedelic moods, the Haitian Vodou band and alternative Belgian production duo released their first collaboration - a debut album in 2020 called Vodou Alé - before joining forces again for Ayiti Kongo Dub earlier his year on Swiss label Bongo Joe - now, they're releasing the second part of the EP.

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts, with both groups bringing singular qualities that fuse to create something truly mind-bending and hypnotic. Polyrhythmic drum patterns are paired with dubwise electronics, raw, primordial atmospheres and ceremonial chants, which send the listener into a trance-like state.

Much has changed since we last heard from George Issakidis. In the nine years that have passed since the release of his debut solo album, Karezza, the world has become a darker, more chaotic place, with a global pandemic, a rise in right-wing authoritarianism, war in Ukraine and the worsening climate crisis contributing to an impending sense of doom. Those who follow the ancient teachings of Hinduism may cite this as evidence of the imminent end of the Kali Yuga, the fourth and final part of the yuga cycle – a ‘dark age’ filled with war, conflict, and declining spirituality.

It’s the Kali Yuga, and particularly Issakidis’s own efforts to forge a path through these turbulent times via daily yoga study and practice, that provided the inspiration behind his latest project. To be shared with the public over a series of albums, Navigating The Kali Yuga takes his music in a myriad of mesmerising, otherworldly and thought-provoking new directions, balancing oblique instrumental commentary on 21st century society with snapshots of his own intense, blissful and life-changing experiences through yoga – and in particular his own kundalini awakening, an ecstatic experience radiating from the base of the spine that lasted for months.

The first thing listeners will note is that it is a very different musical journey to those Issakidis has travelled in the past. Initially associated with techno thanks to his 1990s work – initially as part of the Micronauts, and then with Speedy J – Issakidis gently moved away from his club roots on Karezza, even if the album’s buzzing and hallucinatory electronic concoctions still glanced furtively towards the dancefloor.

Navigating The Kali Yuga Volume One features a series of electronic soundscapes that are variously deeply psychedelic, disturbingly discordant, effortlessly ethereal and unusually picturesque. Issakidis created them over a number of years at his home studio in Vancouver, utilising an extended process of hardware manipulation, improvisation and editing. His use of a dizzyingly long list of analogue and modular synthesisers – including many rare and custom-built pieces – helps to give the album’s seven tracks an unearthly, timeless and on occasions disconcertingly unsettling feel.

At first heady and intoxicating (see the tipsy melodies, cascading motifs and Radiophonic Workshop pulses of ‘Ourania’), then tribalistic and intensely psychedelic (‘Sa Caroca’, with its echoing notes and reverb-doused half-rhythm, and the undeniably freaky ‘Apana’), Navigating The Kali Yuga Volume 1 provides a slowly shifting soundtrack that gently edges towards a more hopeful conclusion.

There are hints of this bright new dawn on ‘Slow Ecstasy’, whose alien-sounding electronics are buzzing with enraptured joy, but it’s on the album’s two longest tracks that the picture becomes clearer and Issakidis’s vision more blissful. This slow-motion transformation begins with ‘Deer Horns (The Upper Triangle)’, a 12-minute ambient excursion in which prolonged notes and tones seemingly drift above icy, glacial chords and immersive sonic textures. Issakidis then transports us to blissful, weightless place on 15-minute closing cut ‘Le Jardin Et Son Jardinier’, a musical out-of-body experience rich in echoing, evolving electronics and opium-strength melodic motifs. It’s a stunning conclusion to the first part of Issakidis’s ongoing exploration of the Kali Yuga.

For our final release of 2022, we return to an old friend to see us out in style. L/F/D/M has previously dropped a cassette EP of tough Electro steppers and an album of Acid hardware jams on Beat Concern, but refuses to repeat himself with this 'Quasi-Modo' EP. These 4 tracks highlight the ever present influence of the hardcore rave continuum to L/F/D/M’s phenomenal output to date.

These tracks nod to that special 1992 period of hardcore, more so than any of L/F/D/M’s other hardcore releases but remain in that ‘meta-state’ of being aware of subsequent genre advancements post ’92 (where were you?)

However, these tracks (or trax?) highlight a pure love for the naivety of the pre-Jungle hardcore period. Breaks prevail, bass is weighty and the stabs hit heavy.

While Fantazia famously took us into 1992(gether), Beat Concern will take you out of 2022 like you were dancing in a field off the M25 30 years ago.

. Mono twists our sense of time again, coming up with the third installment of his ‘Redate’ series: an elegant selection of uncut tracks, roaming in the fields of electro, acid, IDM and EBM. Redate III in its digital format presents tracks that were written and recorded between 2014 and 2015. As the cassette version, it includes not only Redate III (as side A), but a collection of J. Mono’s various other tracks created between 2017 and 2021, that appeared beforehand on various compilation albums (as side B). In other words, with this fresh new tape you’re all set with 8 years of J. Mono experience.

Redate III has a collection of 12 tracks that were all born in the mid 2010s. They are quick and ambitious tracks with usually a fast pace, ready to action and not afraid of melodic or rhythmic complexities. These raw edits usually tell us a discourse of a few key musical elements, constantly intertwined with each other: winding basslines and beats, wandering pads and leads. Never longer than 3 or 4 minutes, they focus on precise and rapid variations of sonic ideas that are full of heart, akin to compositions we know as bagatelles, sonatinas or études from previous centuries.

The twelve tracks are spot on understandings of what intuitive, energetic yet sensitive electronics can mean in the 21st century. Sweet melodies, acidic vibes and dreamy echoes dominate the record while dirty, muddy and distorted sound waves are also eager to take over the course.

Redate III offers a range of impressions and moods, where each track captures one very specific emotional moment. Melancholic and passionate tunes, frantic rhythms and delicate harmonies at work: electrified gnossiennes, beat-driven gymnopédies in 40 minutes.
