There was a gentle throb as the train rumbled beneath the city up above. It travelled from borough to borough between stations, pulsing its way through the endless city. People came and went from each carriage, from time to time they might be so interested as to cast a glance at one another but most of the time they remained solitary and silent, engaged only in the pulse of their technology and headsets. This was life in the present, a blurred reality in which faces were forgotten and replaced by screens. 

ELLLL is an Irish producer and DJ of who we have been following with intrigue in recent years. Her own music has been widely acclaimed and we ourselves have enjoyed what she has released. Now she has teamed up with Irish label Art for Blind Records to formulate the release of a compilation called Gash Trax, a record featuring all female, LGBTQ+ and queer artists from around the island of Ireland.

Bed of Roses head honcho Break Mode turns out two tracks of introspective, breaks inspired head spinners with choice remixes from Carly Barton and Sound Believer. Wash One is a slo-mo, heady, end-of-night jaw pleaser built on layers of swirling vocal samples from wwwhisperkid and an 808 kick. Stabs is an acid-dipped, mid-tempo dance movement dripping with melodrama and not-not reminiscent of Violator-era Depeche Mode. Fresh off their brilliant OST release on Musique Plastique, Carly Barton splits Stabs in two with a darker rolling baseline, trance-inducing use of stereo and one eye towards sunrise. Sound Believer turns in a 7 minute, 90's UK tinged remix of Wash One with a driving four-on-the-floor beat and an ethereal balearic breakdown.

Inaugurating his eponymous record label elninodiablomusic, here comes el nino diablo’s maiden solo effort, ’Shadowplay’. The EP was recorded at Berlin's iconic Funkhaus studios in the winter of 2019 and features an original art cover courtesy of Danish designer Tobias Jacobsen. The music video for Shadow Dancer was directed by Adam Munnings (www.adammunnings.com).

Drawing its inspiration from the struggle and rise of the feminine, the darker minded ‘Unchained’ follows up with restrained, contradictory power. Draped in muted tones and featuring FX-drenched percussive elements directly derived from field recordings made at the Funkhaus, it folds and unfolds repeatedly; blending in the mangled suavity of distorted choirs with tape-echo’d strings and sluggish drumwork to weave an intricate tale on duality and the nature of change.

Tecwaa is no newcomer in the Höga Nord-roster. He has already made two appearances on the label with an album and a single. This, his third release on the label is another 7” containing pure, high quality Left-field and Slow-disco.

The sound in Tecwaa’s music might be explained partly by his geographic position. Being based in York the sound is not as predictable as it might have been if the music was produced in one of the country’s larger cities. It holds a lot of influences found in, say Manchester and London, but still the music holds a contrasting quality with equal parts of freedom and melancholy resounding in the tracks. And the result is unique and beautiful: Airy and free-floating piano drills, dub effects from space and ghost-choruses recorded from secret rooms inside York’s Minister give the electronic sound an organic feel. The melancholy is more of an eerie feeling hiding beneath it all – maybe the case for most DJs living through these times.

Still the show goes on and on and with Tecwaa staying productive and keeping top premium music alive, all the messed-up kids missing life in the clubs get their share while in this hiatus.
