The large entrance room was dotted with doors of all shapes and sizes, what lay behind them was a mystery. Only those brave enough to take a risk would reap the rewards, but uncertainty and suspicion left many hesitant and crippled by fear. Was it really worth the gamble? Originally born in the early 2010s as a platform for local talent in Barcelona and further afield in Spain, Barcelona's Zeroocho Records took a hiatus from releasing music but they're now back with a bang. Still committed to platforming local artists, their next EP comes via Inner Axes: the aptly named 'Cosmic House' which draws from his love of Italo, 90s house, acid and jungle. On the flip we're treated to a powerful trance-tinged reinterpretation of the title track from Serious Trouble co-founder Benedikt Frey.

Modern Ruin are Nikolaos Raptis (aka Fringe Society, based in Berlin) and Gerard Papasimakopoulos (lead vocalist of the now-defunct Rattler Proxy, based in Athens). Their debut album "Unemployment Line Disco" came out last year on Hoga Nord Records. This EP is their first for Lurid Music. It includes remixes by Gabe Gurnsey (Factory Floor) and Fringe Society. Trashcan techno and darkroom banter rub elbows like barfly buddies. Do you really want to go "where everybody knows your name"?

Exhausted Modern's debut full-length titled The Year of the Rat is a proof of the thought-provocation that author's name generates. Released on his own Endless Illusion imprint, the album doesn't have all the answers, it simply offers Exhausted Modern's perception of the modern times and also the energy to do something with them. The title, borrowed from the Chinese zodiac calendar, doesn't slip to mere esoteric prognosis, it fittingly and provocatively comments on broken mechanics of society, capitalistic hierarchisation and emotional frustration of its victims. Despite the dystopian character of Exhausted Modern's sound, which ranges from fast melancholia through suspicious calmness to slowly bubbling rage, it doesn't feel like the end of the world. It's critical artistic statement of a person who despite seeing all the darkness, also sees the way out of it.
