Premiere: Mahkina ‘Dark Matter’

The sun began to set in the distance, sucking the warmth from the day and leaving a bitter chill in the air. In daylight the landscape was breathtaking but under the veil of darkness everything changed. The hills distorted into new forms, the trees became twisted and contorted, the shapes of the valley morphing and moving as if they were coming to life. The people and animals were different too; it was as though they were under a spell, hypnotised by the glowing moon and the blanket of stars that cascaded overhead.

Terra Magica know their onions. Since launching in spring of 2021, they've served up gem after gem of weirdo club music, welcoming with open arms artists like Rambal Cochet, Poly Chain, Mogwaa and many more to join their psychedelic world. Focusing predominantly on Various Artist releases, their next is more of the same, this time featuring new, unreleased magic from the likes of Tadan, Iro Aka, Moisk and a few nuggets from the label bosses, Mirko Hecktor and Tom Sprenger, individually and under their joint guise Hektisch Sprengen DJs. CLUB TERRAM has got a bit of everything we love: a sprinkle of cosmic goodness, a peppering of acid and some of those Goa trance flavours - very tasty.

PREMIERE: Iro Aka - Deshaper [Terra Magica]

The respected and interesting Vilnius-based label Electric Shapes kicks off its 2023 season with the 4th volume of its “Unreleased Territory” series. Featuring 28 (!) tracks this time, the compilation presents a selection of artists whose particular sonorities panned out in the construction of a unique soundscape: Tassilo Vanhöfen, Pletnev, A-Tweed X Oltrefuturo, Tadan, Adventure Society, Komodo Kolektif, Itako, Ensure, Gem Wallow, MagicPink, Dazion, just to name a few, are part of the heavy line-up.

The track we were solicited to review/premiere is the result of the collaboration between the Italian producers A-Tweed (SXDNS222/FREEDL029) and Oltrefuturo. While the former has already landed on almost every single important imprint amid the so-called Indie Dance/Dark Disco scene, the latter has been paving a similar trajectory with appearances on Multi Culti, Fauna Revè, and Sinchi, all of them in partnership with his fellow countryman, and coming soon on NEIN his first solo flight.

“Pizza Attic” is an intense and nervous cut, not meant for easy dance floors and green partygoers. Its complexity is definitely for seasoned ears. Okay, the curious abecedarian can give it a shot. Caveat emptor: This pizza is acid, topped with a way-too-fat bassline, and sprinkled with intriguing speech-like fragments.

Exclusive: Credit 00 - Save The Forest!

Alexander Dorn, better known as Credit 00, returns to Uncanny Valley to release his No More Sad Trance EP, a four tracker highlighting the artist’s musical extravaganza as well as love of experimentation when it comes to own productions and therefore consists out of a conglomerate of sounds and influences reaching from Jungle, Garage over to Trance and 90s Pop and more. Save The Forest!, the last track on the EP, shows signs of Trance-typical sounds with slight 90s nuances put over a lush bass line. Wobbling chords, slight Acid bleeps and short Break-esque round off the track making one musically dive into the rain forest as the before mentioned sounds create not only the atmosphere of it but also deliver an approach for a visualization of the scenery.

Cormac brings the heat into the new year with a brand new EP on his Polari imprint, this time coming from Greek DJ/production duo,  Boys‘ Shorts.

Boys’ Shorts is a Greek DJ/production duo based in London. The duo was founded by Vangelis (ex-LAGASTA) and Tareq. 

The Crop Tops EP‘s title track is a lyrical ode to queer dancefloor longing and is already proving to be a much requested hit.‘Days Without You‘ and ‘Nostalgia‘ compliment each other with a laidback emotional warmth, whilst ‘In The City‘ draws on their rave culture roots. The EP displays an expansive and clever musical world.

Cormac on the EP:
Boys‘ Shorts are two talented greek queers, whose music I've been playing for the last few years. I love their use of lyrics , their nods to rave and 90s music culture. It's truly a great thing to showcase them at their pop sensibility finest with the Crop Tops EP. All of these tracks have been heavily ID requested in my sets the last year.

Forthcoming EP Crop Tops is due to be released digitally, 17th of February.
