Hagan follows up his previous releases on Gobstopper, Jamz Supernova's Future Bounce and Python Syndicate with an EP for new London imprint One Level. Forward Focus finds the British-Ghanaian producer - championed by DJs including Benji B, Jamz Supernova, Mele, Gilles Peterson and Touching Bass - exploring new sounds beyond the Afro-centric Club and Funky rhythms of his work to date. 

Influenced greatly by sounds from across the world, especially in Africa, Forward Focus is a fusion of melodic, rhythmic and arrangement ideas that create a stepping stone toward Hagan's further work to come, evolving his unique take on black electronic music to find a new and distinctive style that knows no boundaries. 

• Osh
On the EP's opening track Hagan's groove sample selection and intricate drum programming draw from his South African House and Brazilian muses. A fine blend of cross cultural sounds and rhythms where infectious bass lines, orchestral strings and marimbas intersect. The key change offers suspense and gives the track space to breathe before the listener is introduced to Osh's final momentous drop.

• Rays Above
With most of the additional percussive drums recorded using a single djembe played to give multiple tones on the hits, ‘Rays Above’ shares a connection to Hagan’s previous production ‘Coastline’. Similar features are present, with both tracks featuring guitarist Alex Blake, saxophonist Kwadwo Poku, and staccato detuned synth chords that altogether serve as a representation of Hagan's usual contrasting rough and smooth flavours.

• Porto’s Groove 
Inspired by a trip to Porto back in 2017, where he played at Enchudafa Hardass Sessions, Hagan captures the energy of his set and the crowd with this flute-led track. On this track we hear Hagan resampling a simple melody by chopping and rearranging the audio, reversing some of the takes to create a reinvigorated and spice-injected instrument. Influenced by Portugal’s vibrant Afro-House scene, the intricate drum programming captures the essence of the country's diverse club culture.

• Mando 
Named after the hometown of Hagan’s great grandmother in Ghana, the track opens up smoothly with ancestral percussion and vocal cuts, followed by vintage strings and rhythmic Highlife guitars. The chorus and tape effects applied on the keys gives the instrument an old and warm feel, reminiscent of Mando village life.

'Good vibrations is the label love of Sean McCabe, much respected on the underground scene for his soulful deep house productions. McCabe has made his mark on this genre over the years, and now he invites back to his Bristol imprint, Chicago songwriter, spoken word performer, and producer, Harold Matthews Jr..  Harold, over the years, has penned some timeless classics that you’ll be shocked to learn, the most notable being ‘I get Lifted’ that was performed by Barbara Tucker. His tracks have roused dancefloors and MAW sets since the 90s, and still do. On ‘Peripheral Vision’, Harold Matthews Jr. has written a collection of powerful lyrics and observations, and has performed them over five solid cuts, collaborating with Cardiff’s DJ Fill and Black Sonix, vocalist Dawn Williams on the sublime ‘Into You’, Syl Messi on vocals, and fellow Chicagoan Nickel Slick on the closer. Sean McCabe joins in too on the remix, as this collections spans from deep house to solid soul grooves, to fine and credible hip hop. This album sampler is a must-grab for serious deep house spinners.'

Cécille Records presents the debut project and album from Cabin Luv Affair late June, the new guise from a well known regular on the imprint who shall remain anonymous and allow the music to speak for itself.

This new project will mark a shift in Cécille’s output as the long running and widely beloved label embraces the long player format, one which allows artists to delve deeper into their influences and showcase a diversity of styles. Something which is perfectly encapsulated here with this new project by Cabin Luv Affair.

Across the thirteen track album, Cabin Luv Affair offers up an amalgamation of styles from the smooth Parisian and filter House feels of tracks like opener ‘Vida (Intro), ‘Naked In Love (Pimpin Ain’t Easy Mix) and ‘Feelin’ Good But Lonely’ through to more classic Disco-tinged House cuts like ‘Right Or Wrong’, ‘Lo Que Soy’ and closing track ‘To The Moon And Back’.

Also on offer are some tracks aesthetically deeply rooted in raw house music in its purest form, like the dreamy chord and crisp rhythm fuelled ‘Mirror In Mirror’, the swinging, bumpy groove of the aptly titled ‘Magic Ride’ and the bouncy, swinging drum groove, soaring vocals and choppy stab sequences making up ‘Over Your Face’. Cabin Luv Affair also throws in some playful interlude like tracks with ‘Follow The Path (Skit)’ and the low-slung hip-hop tinged ‘Play The Game (Skit)’ to truly capture the sonic exploratory feel a long player format allows.

James Stewart - Cotounou EP

James Stewart is the host, resident DJ and co-promoter of monthly night “Black Atlantic Club” at Le Sucre in Lyon. Borrowing the term “Black Atlantic” from renowned scholar Paul Gilroy’s 1993 book, Stewart presents “black music” as a transnational, incredibly diverse cultural exchange. An avid lecturer on the subject and founder of the Blog Afrosouldescarga, he merges an intellectual approach with the musical and creative side of things: as an active conga player and percussionist, member of Voilaaa Sound System and showhost at Radio Nova. This EP is the work of of a mature and thoughtful musician, combining different musical influences at a high level of production. Alma Negra Records are proud to present James Stewart with his Cotonou EP!

"Cotonou’s 6/8 rhythm is inspired by the Chimurenga Music of Zimbabwe. Thomas Mapfumo is one of the musicians who popularized this music in the early 80`s to the world. The lyrics are from a poem I wrote during my first trip to Bénin, a land full of music, poetry & theatre. A land where I’ve travelled a lot. My friend Basile Olatunde gave me a great interpretation on this song, which I chose to be the title of my first EP. In memory of the great times I’ve spent in this country and the very important face-to-face encounter with my Brother Gauthier Marchais."

After his acclaimed debut « Cotonou » on Alma Negra’s record label, James Stewart comes back with his new EP « Atlantic River Drive » for Mawimbi Records, featuring two collaborations with Ghanaian kologo musician Ayuune Sule as well as two remixes from Simbad aka SMBD.

James Stewart met Ghanaian kologo musician Ayuune Sule, after booking several shows of kologo music star King Ayisoba in Lyon. Stewart was quick to witness the bluesy tone of Ayuune’s voice and his kindness as a musician, despite his impressive stature. Quite logically, Stewart invited Sule to record vocals on two of his ongoing demos at Bruno Patchworks’ recording studio (Voilaaa, Mr. President, Da Break), with the idea of making a rather unheard crossover between traditional kologo music and contemporary styles that would both appeal to Ghanaian crowds and a Western audience. Stewart then had a number of his arrangement ideas re-recorded by a talented cast of musicians (see list of credits), resulting in a brilliant mix of acoustic and electronic textures, sounding both vintage and modern.

Nodding to Eddie Palmieri’s landmark record “Harlem River Drive”, “Atlantic River Drive” is a stomping dancefloor track, drawing from the 6/8 feel of kologo music and the energy of contemporary club music. The track can be read as a tribute to the musical cross-pollinations between the African continent and its many diasporas, which Stewart has dedicated a long part of his life to, while also a more intimate story about his life and family. All words were written by Stewart and then translated by Sule in his native Fra fra language from Northern Ghana. 
 
“Where Are You Going?” is a two-part journey that reminds us that we should care about each other, about our communities while we don’t know what the future is made of. An important and much welcome message to navigate through these troubled, uncertain times. Referencing N’dombolo music, the track has two parts and rich arrangements, with its first part going deep with syncopated clarinet hooks and playful percussion parts, and its second part moving to a four-on-the-floor pattern and an entrancing baritone saxophone solo. 
 
The EP also features Worldwide FM and Brownswood maestro Simbad, who delivers two dancefloor-ready reworks of the track “Where Are We Going?” under his SMBD moniker, turning it into a spiritual, dubby journey, as well as an emotional peaktime track.

An open road presents opportunities and risks; unknown and exciting prospects could lie ahead, if they chose to embark on the trip. Better to keep moving than to stay stationary, best to keep going forward than to look back. After all it's about the journey, not the ending...

The next outing on Mawimbi Records is a collaborative release from Black Atlantic co-founder and resident James Stewart and Ghanaian kologo musician Ayuune Sule. After booking kologo music star King Ayisoba for several shows in his native Lyon, Stewart struck up a friendship with Sule and being enchanted by both his vocals and his humility invited him to record vocals for two of his demos, resulting in a crossover of contemporary styles and traditional kologo music. 

Shared in two parts, one deep and percussive and the other a four-to-the-floor take, the aptly titled "Where Are We Going?" communicates a message of caring for one another and our communities while we are unsure what the future holds. It gets the remix treatment from Worldwide FM resident Simbad under his SMBD moniker who offers two versions: an emotive house cut and a spiritual dubbed-out version.

Producteur, percussionniste son premier EP, "Cotonou", est sorti en 2018 sur le label suisse Alma Negra. Son dernier EP "Atlantic River Drive" est sorti sur le label Mawimbi Records en octobre 2020 (FIP, NOVA, RFI, RTS...). Il a aussi sorti le single "Nolias" en 2019 sur le label anglais "On the Corner Records".

James Stewart is DJ host and programmator for the Black Atlantic club monthly party at Le Sucre in Lyon. He’s active member and programmer for the collective Palmwine Records, he is the founder of the blog Afrosouldescarga and hosts radio shows devoted to Black Atlantic music on Radio Nova Lyon LYL Radio & Radioshic.
