Has the techno industry failed Palestine?

Sama', the world's most famous Palestinian DJ, talks about Israel’s genocide in Gaza and how the music industry—and some of her peers in techno—have failed Palestine.

The most deeply divisive topic of the year is undoubtedly Israel's genocide in Gaza. The issue has prompted some artists to step boldly into the political ring and others to shield their professional identities from scrutiny and public discourse, with each camp drawing fierce backlash.

After a brief summer hiatus, the RA Exchange returns with a new season, launching with Palestinian DJ Sama’ Abdulhadi, who addresses all this and more in a charged interview. The Ramallah-born artist has since gone on to tour non-stop internationally, regularly appearing alongside some of her idols growing up, such as Richie Hawtin and Nicole Moudaber. She's also no stranger to RA: in 2023, she graced the cover of this magazine and, just this summer, contributed to our drop of RA.1000 anniversary mixes.

This interview, though, is the most outspoken Abdulhadi has ever been. She shares her take on what's happened since October 7th, including her assessment of how and where the music industry, and her peers, have fallen short; the pressure she feels to be a global spokesperson for Palestine; why she feels that the revolutionary spirit has drained from a subculture built from resistance; and how, despite it all, she retains a sense of optimism and forward momentum. Within his mind the loops were beginning to sound. Chaos was all around, he danced long through the night doing the simple brain dance for all to see. In this place there was no judgement and a sense of curious self exploration, they would move long into the early hours. The music played loudly, the tropical drums banging furiously in the grand hall. They moved in time with the relentless percussion as the anticipation grew and grew. This was the place. 

Jascha Hagen is set to release a tropical inspired EP on Global Warming, most apt for the summer months. It also features a rather exotic remix from Dj Steef.

Old time friend of the label and major artist of the downtempo scene of the South of France, Fred Berthet is signing Global Warming latest release. Much respected for his works as DJ Steef, Copyshop or Troublemakers (with DJ Oil & Arnaud Taillefer), he delivered us two downtempo acid jams, filled with sexual tension, seeping walls and slow orgy. It also features remixes from our all-time favorites Italian balearic band, Mushrooms Project, who sends us back a superb organic and solar vision or the original track and on the opposite, Global Warming’s founder Malcolm (@mmaallccoollmm), signing a bestial and deliciously obscure cover. Malcolm Mitchell’s Global Warming Records is a self-proclaimed outlet for “discoholics” and multi-cultural geeks. The three projects they’ve released are a collection of songs emanating a cosmic, often tribal, synth heavy analog disco sound. The latest release from Marseille based producer Fred Berthet (aka. DJ STEEF), an old time friend of the label and major artist of the downtempo scene in the South of France, fits a similar mold. The EP, similar to its artwork, is filled with a slow, sexual tension heightened by slow, driving rhythms and hypnotic acid bass lines.

Included in the EP is a remix from Italian balearic duo, Mushrooms Project (Giorgio Giri and Marco Lentano), who have crafted a superbly organic and deeply drugged out mid tempo burner that seems to call on numerous Ibiza sunrises for inspiration. Freaky, mesmerizing synth work take the listener on a trip to acid islands where steady bass permeates through thick fog over glistening percussive sequences. Its driving rhythms make the track feel faster than it is. This is a much appreciated form of trickery in down-tempo productions. Slow burners that make you dance hard are not easy to make.

The EP, and 100 limited edition copies of the naughty cover art illustrated by Ben Hubbard and printed on 420 x 594 mm poster, 250g heavy matte paper is available to purchase via GWR’s Bandcamp page.
