For out latest Burek podcast we have a skillfully layered journey into various shades of house from Birmingham based DJ and producer Mark E.
Mark E’s love affair with electronic dance music started when Manchester was Madchester and rave culture swept through England. Later he tasted house at the hands of legends like John Kelly and Frankie Knuckles at Wolverhampton scene, before moving to Birmingham for University where he is still today creating and feeding the club scene.
Mark  is one of those guys who releases at least a few amazing records each year. Now, nearly a decade of releasing music, Mark  has a discography that contains efforts for top-notch labels like Spectral Sound, Running Back, and Golf Channel and his very own imprint Merc.

Mark E has kindly provided us with second part of a triple mix series, mixed as a straight vinyl set at home, accompanied with a few bottles of fine beer and some stuffed animals. Mix also containing first airing of Mark forth-comer on Spectral Sound. BOOM! Enjoy!

Though you may have expected us to take the obvious opportunity to premiere some new sounds from Joe Munday on the very beginning of the week we decided that, even by our standards, that would have been pushing it just a bit too far. Has the techno industry failed Palestine?

Sama', the world's most famous Palestinian DJ, talks about Israel’s genocide in Gaza and how the music industry—and some of her peers in techno—have failed Palestine.

The most deeply divisive topic of the year is undoubtedly Israel's genocide in Gaza. The issue has prompted some artists to step boldly into the political ring and others to shield their professional identities from scrutiny and public discourse, with each camp drawing fierce backlash.

After a brief summer hiatus, the RA Exchange returns with a new season, launching with Palestinian DJ Sama’ Abdulhadi, who addresses all this and more in a charged interview. The Ramallah-born artist has since gone on to tour non-stop internationally, regularly appearing alongside some of her idols growing up, such as Richie Hawtin and Nicole Moudaber. She's also no stranger to RA: in 2023, she graced the cover of this magazine and, just this summer, contributed to our drop of RA.1000 anniversary mixes.

This interview, though, is the most outspoken Abdulhadi has ever been. She shares her take on what's happened since October 7th, including her assessment of how and where the music industry, and her peers, have fallen short; the pressure she feels to be a global spokesperson for Palestine; why she feels that the revolutionary spirit has drained from a subculture built from resistance; and how, despite it all, she retains a sense of optimism and forward momentum. Mark E last delivered on Futureboogie back in November 2014, so it’s a welcome return to the label for the Birmingham based DJ & producer.  With his Merc imprint running on full steam, and previous releases on revered labels like Spectral Sound and Running Back, Mark is becoming an ever dependent exponent of the real and raw house music vibe, and no more so than on the Basement Trax EP.

Basement Trax 1, distorted synths wander over a low-slung beat, the marching hi-hats and filter work are tweaked to perfection.  It’s a track of basic elements, but done so well, the arrangement building steadily and bags of warmth and soul deep at the heart of this track. 

The gnarly bass and classic string sounds of Basement Trax 2 make an ideal companion piece to the A side.  Delivered in the finest wild-pitch tradition, the raw sounding production packs a punch as the stomping drums and repetitive keys ramp up the heat for a real blazer of an underground club cut.

The shopfront looked gloomy and mysterious in the streetlight. Dust sat layered in the windows and no light could be seen from within. The crew of revellers stood eagerly outside the door, a small queue had already begun to form behind them as they waited. Finally at midnight, the bolts were unlatched and it swung open. One at a time they were ushered inside and in the distance they could hear the sound of drums echoing. Below them there was a party underway, deep down in the basement, and they were going there. 
Mark E is forever on point. His latest EP for Futureboogie is on point and 'Basement Trax' is on point.
