Computer Birds

Towering skyscrapers flanked by vibrant, neon lights transformed and flashed in varying colours and sizes as they moved down the strip. Everywhere you turned, something interesting was ensuing: a finely suited man urged passers-by to take business cards for debauched nocturnal activities, families fumbled over their cameras to take photos in front of plastic monuments, and street entertainers wowed onlookers with cheap tricks. If you blinked you missed something, then continued unsure if it even happened in the first place...  

Artist, producer and NTS resident Kit Grill is gearing up for the release of his new album Ride, coming out via his own Primary Colours imprint. The result of six months of work, the 12-track LP signals a more structured approach to composition, with his use of the Fairlight CMI keyboard granting him a new means of experimentation and a fresh sound palette to work from. A wide breadth of influences can be heard across the album, from krautrock to new wave and ambient to synth-pop, culminating in a batch of orchestrations that range from avant-pop to electronic dance.

Speaking about the track, Kit said “I re-wrote this track a number of times and the final edit felt complete once the guitar, pitch shift and ending was complete. ‘Feather’ goes through different stages sonically and then ends on a sound almost like a vocal on a wave going up and down. The video I made to accompany it came about through finding the visuals of 70s Las Vegas on youtube. I reached out to the people that recorded it and they sent me the footage to use. I didn’t know how it would end up but it has a slight ‘Fear and Loathing…’ feel to it, passing through a city and having numerous icons, colours, patterns etched into your memory but you’re not necessarily sure what just happened.”

A visit to Vin Sol's studio in 2016 turned into a live recording session resulting in 6 tracks of high energy red meat. Thru Out is the result of two friends in a studio in a bunker somewhere out there in San Francisco combining their experience in music making. 

These 6 tracks were recorded at soo wavey studios, mixed and mastered by Reede Reynolds in Berlin.

Walking through the roses she looked out at the rest of the garden but relished in the fact that she felt at home amongst the tall, delicate flowers. It was not treason for her to feel this way, it was not a crime for her to enjoy the delicate scent of the wondrous blossom in the glow of the warm summer afternoon. She was peaceful and alone, silent and quiet in her own perfection. She was no traitor to the cause for it in itself was but a lie which lay some place else amongst the wild thorns and tall grasses far away. 

Maison Fauna is a newly launched record label from North Carolina, an imprint and lifestyle brand focused on house, techno, and UKG. The first release is a sprawling compilation from a wide assortment of artists due for release on the 13th of November next month. This track was our pick of the lot.

Third number in the DDS split series after a pair of releases courtesy of Betonkust/Új Bála and DJ Overdose/Sematic4, ‘DDS03’ sees Budapest duo SILF (alias Farbwechsel chief-operators Alpár & S Olbricht) and Den Haag-based pair Intergalactic Gary and Pasiphae join forces on a quartet of elusive, unpigeonholeable power moves.
Having slept in the label’s vaults for a few seasons, the two tracks composing the B-side emerge from their slumber in all their time-proof bravura. 
Our choice here was, closing the journey on a much softer, hazier vibe, ‘Aces’ which steers us towards a realm of ambient wonder, where slo-drip cascades of tapping percussions and elegiac synth waters flow into warm, glimmering summer beds. A most contrasting, tranquillising finale to an EP defined by its propensity to change colours and intensity throughout.

The sound bounced and wandered drunkenly between the walls leaving intermittent dancers spellbound and swaying in the breeze. It was loud and abrasive, echoing between his ears like some sort of hypno techno blend of melody and machine. Where was he? How had he gotten to be here? Where were his friends? His mind raced as the music continued to ooze and seep into every inch of the space leaving little to no escape from the dense, magnetic sound...

Matteo Coffetti takes us on a slow moving tour through hypnotic electronic excursions on his own Pho Bho Records. It's a wonderfully weird affair made up of rolling acid arps and quickfire samples. A highly recommended release we expect this one to do very well indeed.
