The wheels kept turning as the smell of rubber hung thick in the air. Inside the velodrome the riders whizzed in circles, ever closer to the finish line yet caught within the infinite loop. He had been cycling since 1994 and yet the echo of this space still game him the same caustic shivers as the first time he'd entered. The bright fluorescent lights lit up the shiny wooden stretch with a magical glow and the sound of cheers were the only motivation helping to drive him home. He kept pedalling, kept looping, round and round. 

Marlon Hoffstadt is a firm favourite here at Ransom Note, he recently launched his new label titled Midnight Themes and this track features on the first EP.

Clutching At Straws is a brand new label established by Brian Ring. Born in Cork, Ireland. Ring has been residing in Berlin for over 4 years, during which time he has lent his dancefloor-focused, predominantly house sounds to a range of renowned labels including Freerange. Running Back and Bordello A Parigi. A producer who values a vehement quality-over-quantity approach, Clutching At Straws represents the first time Ring has helmed his own imprint. Featuring two originals as well as a remix from London producer Kiwi, the Reflections EP is most definitely deserving of the wait.

We kick off with ‘Acid Sunrise’, a classy house cut that envelops the listener in a warm glow from the off. Full of colourful motifs throughout, it’s part acid/part Balearic-tinged sound is the perfect antidote to Europe’s current climes. Characterised by a nimble, catchy-as-hell baseline, this one is pure dynamite of the sort that will sound at its most pronounced as the first signs of morning begin to enter the dancefloor.

Next up is Kiwi, a producer who’s been making power moves of his own lately thanks to a host of well-received cuts for the likes of Jennifer Cardini’s Correspondent, Tennis’ Life & Death and Optimo’s Optimo Music. His dramatic reinterpretation of Ring’s ‘Forest Walk’ , is a highbrow gem that’s full of gorgeous melodies and all-round positive vibes, with the man in charge changing the narrative quite exceptionally toward the track’s final phases.

Culminating the record is the sounds of ‘Emergency Tool’, a real statement track that’s sure to leave DJs and dancers in a frenzy over the next few months. An upfront banger of the sort that wonderfully incorporates both house and techno elements, it starts off on a fairly innocuous tip before unfurling into an uptempo beast. Full of clever bells and a vocal that demands us to “move!” (as well as a wailing cop siren that only heightens the sense of mania), ‘Emergency Tool’ is a track that’s destined to be used by discerning DJs when they really have to step things up a notch.

Somewhat of a cult favourite, Shall Not Fade was born out of the city of Bristol in winter 2015 and since then has captured the hearts and minds of us all. They’ve came a long way since their debut release from a young Aussie talent, who unknowingly at the time would go on to become one of the biggest names in electronic music, Mall Grab. The rise of the label has been beautiful to watch and thoroughly deserved, consistently releasing record after record of the highest calibre while continuing to attract superstars; Adryiano, DJ Boring, Skream the list goes on... After establishing themselves in the music scene a new project was unveiled to us all, the sub-label of Lost Palms. Like any sub-label it gave them the adaptability to focus on a more specific sound, a smooth euphoric head-in-the-cloud sound that we are now all too familiar with. Subjoi, Harrison BDP and Demuja are a few names embedded onto the leaves of the Lost Palms. The twenty first Lost Palm gently falls into view and is delivered in expert style by Zoo Look. Already being aware of Zoo Look’s back catalogue, it's easy to see how this match up was inevitable to happen – a perfect musical match. Four completely unique tracks compile the Similar Steps EP, with the entitled track our premiere today. Arpeggiated chords slowly glide in from the mist to become submersed amongst a broken beat. The beautiful thing about this track is the constantly evolving sound winding and diving throughout the stages to make a piece of art. As the decade has rolled to a close, the ways in which fans discover music is more fractured and algorithmic than ever. Massive platforms use technology and playlists that many listeners have become reliant on to surface new and engaging tracks, and while there are still a handful of independent press outlets pushing releases from underserved artists, they are dwindling by the year. Yet in the face of a rapidly changing industry, there are still a number of even smaller collectives bucking the trend of computerized gatekeeping, thanks in no small part to the hard work and passion of like-minded individuals who care deeply and are driven to support and spread the music they love.

One such faction is the unrelenting and ever-evolving Bolting Bits, co-founded as a French language publication in 2014 by Florent Tarroux (who produces and DJs as Numea Daze) and his partner Sarah-Marie. Bringing Igor Bezuglov onboard in early 2016, together they helped Bolting Bits reach a more universal audience by transitioning their writing to the English language. Alongside a small team of rotating contributors, they've worked tirelessly to not only upload music from artists they admire, but also raise the profile of talented newcomers who are eager to share their efforts---many of whom have gone on to release on labels such as Shall Not Fade, Lobster Theremin, Feel My Bicep, and a myriad of high-profile outlets. With over 650 premieres under their belt, as well as over 100 original mixes and over 6 million plays on Soundcloud, Bolting Bits remains a beacon for the outer rims of traditional dance music, covering everything from jazz to acid to broken beat and beyond. They have thrown dozens upon dozens of parties in their local Montreal and have reached audiences across the globe (except Greenland…hurry up Greenland).
