2024 gets underway, Oath are thrilled to share the imprint’s latest long play, which comes courtesy of rising star Moonee - and you better believe its a solid gold stunner…

Francois Lefevre, the producer behind the Moonee name - alongside his group projects Twice Movement and Simple Request (with French House royalty Tour-Maubourg) - really optimizes all that is bold and beautiful about the House genre. The release of ‘Wabi Sabi’ on Groovence in 2022, then ‘Primal Groove’ on Slothboogie last year, has already helped Lefevre craft a significant space for himself under the Moonee name. His sound is one of tremendous melodic feel, with a plethora of rhythmic patterns and atmospheres being utilised to help create a bountiful sonic universe. His attention to how the groove unravels and how progression can be used softly but subtly really comes over strong, immersing the listener in a very warm place indeed. As beginnings to discographies go, this start is immensely strong, and one which provides a rock solid basis for all sorts of excellence to come forth.

Two EPs down, and now this fantastic long play. Moonee really flexed his style and craft on this record, one which constantly delighted at every turn, providing an enriching spectrum of sounds that stick true to his production technique and to his craft. Not for one second do you stand still, but merely carried along on a wave of melodic euphoria, simply pleased to be along for the ride. The dips from heavy hitting though to softly spoken at handled so well, and as a result we are left with a pretty damn good way to enter in 2024. Winter has arrived, but warm your heart with this stunner.

DJ duo Studio Batsumi (aka Federico Bigonzetti & Marta Paccagnella) reveal details for the first release of their self-titled joint label venture with five-track EP Cosmicomics. The first musical outing from the pair’s new imprint, Studio Batsumi are set to release their original records via the label, as well as offering a platform for burgeoning artists to release their music. With a focus on analogue, for the first few months all releases will be vinyl only (exclusively via Bandcamp). Making the natural step up from selectors and musicians to bona fide label bosses, founding the label marks a new beginning for the pair.

Known for their genre-defying DJ sets, regularly appearing at London’s most reputable listening bars such as Spiritland, Brilliant Corners and Supermax, as well as club previous shows at The Ton of Brix, The Jago, Cafe 1001 and The Waiting Room, the Studio Batsumi imprint plans to follow suit, genre-fluid while sonically defined, much like the pair’s DJ offering.

With the launch EP Cosmicomics written and produced by Federico alongside Parisian guitarist, producer and sound engineer Maxime Obadia, the varying musical backgrounds of the two artists demonstrates this versatile aesthetic for the label expertly, with Fede rooted in electronic and Maxime’s rock background working in harmony on the EP. Combining live instruments with drum machines, synths and a host of genre influences. Artists such as such The Pilotwings, GHF, Kalbata, YuSu, and L’Éclair have been cited as influences on the first EP.

Featuring three original tracks, a remix from esteemed Turkish DJ and producer Jonny Rock and one of Federico’s own versions on B2, the tracks range from bassline-driven downtempo chuggers, dreamy guitar riffs, trippy arpeggios and distorted, wonky pads for a rich and eclectic sound palette to work on and off the dancefloor. Texturised layers of live instrumentation and analogue equipment further enhance the organic and unique quality of Studio Batsumi sound.

With an artist-first approach, Studio Batsumi releases will be on a limited 300-press run, sold exclusively via Bandcamp. To celebrate the launch of the label, on Saturday 13 April the duo will host an in store at Hidden Sounds in Dalston, with the party carrying on at Brilliant Corners where the pair will play a special all-night-long set.

Common Labour returns to the hydraulic PVC press with their milestone tenth 12". This latest four-tracker by pothOles balances crisp percussions and bassy grooves with evocative sprinkles of synthetic harmony. His buddy Yaniel joins the party, collaborating on two tracks. Throwing back to the dawn of their friendship in 2003, this EP gives off a whiff of early-noughties hip house blent with French house, with smoked out clouds and unbothered double-claps complementing the laconic femme vocals of 'Westbound' and 'This & That'. Every track erstwhile enjoys the odd use of a nippy high-reg acid stab, as if to suggest a certain sincerity-but-also-whimsy on the part of the producers - they're taking house music production seriously, but only half-so.

This New EP of his is 4 killer tracks that got us frothing the minute we heard them. But the track we're gunna focus on today is 'Like I Said' an emotive and beautiful deep house cut, filled with cut up string arrangements. It sounds like an Ode to 'Deep Burnt' and we're totally down for that.

If you were to be asked to define the singular sound of Scandinavian electronic music you'd be tough placed to suggest a definitive answer.

The genre continues to evolve and reinvent itself with such enormous consistency that it has become a sound which means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. However, if you were to try to narrow it down towards just a few words then the first in my book would be as follows, playful.
