Not a Pessimist

There was a strange feeling lingering in the air, an eerie sense of tension which hung thick and left a bitter taste in the mouth. Why would it be that there was so much stress? Where had this come from? Why now? What caused the pinch?

He sighed as he wandered through the quiet city, it was dead, the people of the week had left town to return to their families leaving nothing but empty streets and still puddles.

There were no sirens, no cars, ho beaming headlights. Yet still it was noisy where he was.

Preference releases a new EP on Ayeland – a futuristic extravaganza which lends a nod to the early days of Bass music alongside the deconstructed improvisations of the genre which later followed suit.

Monstart is proud to present the label's twentieth release, which will be available November 24, 2023. This "Stepping Out" EP is the result of the collaboration of two French artists: Ouanounou - the head of the label - and Gipsyan - a talented producer from Montpellier.

With "Stepping Out" this original duo pays tribute to their common musical preferences, which are in the mood of the UK & US underground scenes - hard drums, juke, footwork - and global bass. The result is a body of work that is technical, heavy, percussive, yet extremely harmonious. A musical journey into the club world, from 130 to 160 BPM.

"Stepping Out" is a 10-track album by Ouanounou and Gipsyan. They have combined their science and studio approach to create a work that is made for the dancefloor.

After participating in an artistic residency last January, the two artists began a deep process of reflection and creation aimed at defining their perspective of club music in 2023.

The project was based on the idea of liberation and artistic self-affirmation. On the occasion of this 20th release, "Stepping Out" will also be available in a limited edition on vinyl, marking the label's very first physical release.

06. Ouanounou, Gipsyan - Aurora

Mossambi makes his return to All Centre to follow up the stunning debut Resurf EP from the beginning of 2023. On The AI Told Me To, he delivers 3 more experimental techno exertions backed by a heavy-duty club remix from Holloway.

Reptate opens proceedings with otherworldly vocals stuttering over Mossambi’s distinctively inventive sound design. The track enters an off-kilter, compelling groove composed of deep kicks, growling subs and snippets of microtonal melodies, building up and playing out like an extra-dimensional take on dubstep.

The title track keeps up the momentum with deep kicks and shuffling hats, allowing a lush choral pad to stutter and proliferate amongst the percussive intricacies. The chord is manipulated, filtered and triggered in unpredictable patterns as the track progresses, keeping the listener on their toes whilst Mossambi holds down a transfixing groove.

Mossambi’s final track, Miscellaneous Vegetable Platter, slows things down to a hypnotic 110 bpm pace. A disorienting blend of scrambled vocals, fried digital synths and dubbed-out bass and chord hits are kept in check by steady drums, whilst a frenzied snare roll pushes and pulls at the track’s intensity as the track progresses, crafting an engrossing low-tempo workout.

Holloway translates Mossambi’s glitched vocals and heady sound design onto a ferocious four-to-the-floor groove. A warbling bassline bubbles underneath driving percussion, whilst a syncopated hard house siren brings the energy levels to a fever pitch.
