As he entered he cast his eyes around the room, taking in a mirage of flickering colours and luminous buttons. He had been travelling for what had felt like a lifetime through the dense and murky undergrowth in search of the mysterious cavern. Now as he sat perched upon the rubble he truly knew his purpose.

Hiber-nation EP was Recorded at Siesta Delfauno, Buenos Aires, Argentina in December 2019. A place steeped in history and that has seen artists like Carl Craig , DJ Hell and Rob Acid grace its halls. Ara-u worked alongside engineer and member of Argentinian electronic band Klauss Pablo Gil, while getting lost in red wine and deep into the jam amongst a mix of analogue machines. Ara-u edited the resulting takes and put together the EP : Hiber-nation

Gone Gold is the second album from Herrmann Kristoffersen, aka Daniel Herrmann (Flug 8) and Kristina Kristoffersen. Mastered by Jörn Elling Wuttke (The Primitive Painter) it is inspired by the world of gaming and the idea of composing an imaginary soundtrack for the classic racing video game Need for Speed, but in their unique style - kosmische techno, ambient soundscapes and gauzy electronica. 

Creating an imaginary soundtrack for a game and working apart due to Covid-imposed travel restrictions (Daniel in their house in the Taunus woods outside Frankfurt, Kristina in a summerhouse in northern Denmark), it was logical that the couple would use the shortcuts from the gamers’ world to communicate with each other.

Every title represents an aspect of that, providing an insight into how to interpret the song, creating your own online gaming world while listening. From the early-Autechre/AI machine-funk stylings of 1LC (One Life Clear: playing through a video game from start to finish without ever losing a life) and the soulful, space-age techno of Mud (Multi-User Dungeon: a multiplayer real-time virtual world, usually text-based) to the euphoric shoegaze-IDM of 4X (an abbreviation of Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate - a subgenre of strategy-based computer and board games) and the stately, dubbed-out closer Season (a season pass is a form of video game monetisation in which consumers purchase a discounted package for current and future downloadable content).

The term “Gone Gold” (the album’s exceptional title track) comes from the term “gold master”, which is a version of the game that the publisher has determined is good enough to be shipped to stores. (Back then, recordable CDs were manufactured with gold film.) 

However, the album is not just a salute to the gaming industry, Gone Gold also represents an awareness of how it is a growing influence in our lives - for good and bad - especially in these Covid times. 

“The computer has taken over from the television,” explains Kristina, who used to work as a composer for Nintendo. "The escape into the gaming world is an open invitation to let out all the worry and problematic things in life. Millions of children and grown-ups are online communicating all over the world with each other every second of the day. That is pretty wild. I could never have imagined that back in the Nineties when I was playing with my Gameboy."

The wheels had been in motion for a while now, long before the revelations of last night had thrown a spanner in the works. Their trip had been planned to the tee: accommodation, travel, activities, a roadmap to their dream destination. Goa trance is at the core of Vilnius-based label Electric Shapes' next release — an album from Rambal Cochet, the alias of St. Petersburg-based producer Volta Cab. Having previously released music for Soil Records and IDA Sound, he brings his signature touch to his new LP 'Chaos Is Order Yet Undeciphered', which is fuelled by drama, mystery and tension. To add to the magic, the label have invited local producer Jokios Kulturos, Frankfurt's Tassilo and Anatolian Weapons to take Volta Cab's trance-inducing trips off road and down new, thrilling paths.

New Swiss label Rababoo is proud to present his first release: Marcel de Sie! Oscillating between melodic industrial and shaky psychedelic music, Mr. de Sie overcomes his first 3 tracks with a static approach of electronic low drifts – in that sense, we decided to call it a soundtrack “to schuss'', in dedication to all our ski friends from here and there. The first 2 tracks, “Filter Seq'' and “Mezzo FM'' pitch the tone of the EP and are built as explorations of dance floor narratives, with the purpose to generate a wave state of mind through a real sound experience. While the first track is a relentless technoïd filter-driven smasher which immediately bleeps your mind and floods it with sound, the second track unleashes a cascade of sounds that brings any lost hiker back on track and drives him into a shamanic waltz in the mountains. 

The title track “Poetic Frame” is a direct response to these soundscapes, where howling, disturbing synths are at times chimera that fractures the pattern and calls you back to reality.

For his 1st release, Marcel de Sie is joined by Greek producer Anatolian Weapons (Dark Entries) and Belgian’s Victor de Roo (Stroom) for the remixes. Each one delivers a proper interpretation of the 3rd track of the EP “Poetic Frame”. While Anatolian Weapons explores a tribal trance sonic journey that can drive a Dervish dancer crazy, De Roo makes use of his distinguished style and creates the most abstracted version of this track. Not scared to apply kind of a trap snare ratcheting, he brings us to a space urban take.

Movement as Medicine

PREMIERE #1225 | Tassilo Vanhöfen - Paradise Lost [Electric Shapes] 2020

Fired up on high energy Electrons, Timothy Clerkin’s imprint Insult To Injury (the label he runs with perennially on-point platform Ransom Note) is back with another arsenal of acid-tinged techno firearms. Manchester’s own Buran light the Bunsen burner & get things super-heated with their analogue heroics. Both tracks are borne from live jams, with minimal adjustment before going to press. 

Test phase completed, first out the blocks is Beta, employing a monster low end 303 and analogue percussion to create a menacing floor destroyer. This savage assault is quickly followed by Kincaid’s reimagining of the track – slowed down and, for want of a better phrase, like, totally dubbed out, maaaan. Electro collides with Space Echo for a truly unique experience. 

Particles is next, with some serious up-a-gear oomph; full on foot-stomping action, with relentlessly driven acidic bass that takes us back to a time when we could lose ourselves to a groove on the dance-floor. Peak time, rolling techno that demands you move your body. 

Finally, we wind up business with Earth Trax’s ferocious take on Particles. Stripping things back somewhat and highlighting the laser-focused sounds of the original, he’s created a space battle in electro-work-out format. Synth projectiles whizz by our ears before we’re ejected in the vacuum of space with a serene, synth-lead soundscape coda.
