Blurring the lines between UK techno, bass and breakbeat, Out of Sorts present their first release, The Crescent VA. Despite being newcomers on the scene, the Bristol-based label pulls in five artists who are by no means newcomers themselves. Dyslecta teams up with the label after a string of releases this year on Dim Sum, Gated Recordings and Ape-X. Heading up the B-side, Engram is a bouncy, ryhthmic affair packed with intricate percussion, rich sub-bass and vocals that wouldn't go amiss in the heights of the rave era. 
With Dyslecta joining artists Will Hofbauer, An Avrin, Bobo and Farr on this VA, this track sets the pace for the rest of the release. With pre-orders available now ahead of the full limited press release on 21st May, this is a release that isn't set to stick around for long. PREMIERE | Dyslecta - Engram [Out Of Sorts] 2021

Sometimes he felt like he was losing control, as though his grip on reality was slipping between his fingers. In these moments he preferred to shut himself off from the world, remain in darkness with his head buried under the covers. There was some solace in wallowing in these feelings, but it was only temporary: confiding in friends and others around him gave him strength and hope, they helped him to see the light at the end of the tunnel. 

IDA's Sävy Records returns with its third release from a new edition to its roster: Berlin-based Italian Slak. In typical Sävy fashion across the three original tracks Trilogy of Reasons tips the hat to the electronic sounds of the 90s. It's vibrant and full of energy, cruising through anthemic breakbeats, driving acid grooves and atmospheric techno. On the flip, another Berlin-based artist, Adlas, offers up a reinterpretation of one of the tracks which rounds off the EP perfectly.

Positive Not Happy’s next release is another one from the label bosses. The Lumens serve up two evanescent tracks on ‘Caraibi’ alongside a remix from Milano native Man.E. It’s the remix that’s our pick, a straightforward driving cut with a cheeky lick of guitar and positivity in ample supply.

Late 90s Techno is referenced on the title track, a dark and haunting driver that emerges into euphoria later on in the journey. Often spotted about town, it’s no secret that JCow is diligently, quietly (and not so quietly) crafting big tunes. This release is the sound of that inevitable 2020’s shut-in inspiration. Written during those periods, they are finally seeing the light of day.

With focused time in the studio, some serious imagined musical landscapes are the result. Tracks designed for dance-floor breakouts and closed-eye catharsis. We’ve heard these tracks come a long way from inception. Cerebral and kinetic, each track has a unique character, functional yet bound to stand out in any set.

Tracks like ‘a complex range of human emojis’ pay-no-mind in referencing the past with a sly smirk and an updated twist, while the title track ‘in my elem3nt7’ conjures up a certain mystical environment - The tracks bold narrative shift midway is a notable payoff. Swerving boldly into new territory, the percussive motifs fade and return from new angles, sounds cutting and slicing through the speaker like angelic machine gun fire. The drum programming is truly used like a weapon on this one, with those majestic horn samples like calls from the ether.

Exaels ‘swampbuggy’ reworking of title track on the B2 provides the perfect alternate universe, working its way from a sparse ambience into an inspired IDM-leaning breakbeat epilogue.

PREMIRE: JCow - Pay no mind

The second episode of the new Moscow-based imprint Spazio is coming hot! After the super 12-track debut VA published in March this year, the Russian label – creative team, and party series – brings to light its very first EP. Doing the honours, Pavel Fedoseev aka KIKOK and his "Cacao Beach" featuring three Summer-infused originals and two spot-on remixes made with love by Moonoton and Yakovets.

Hailing from Perm, a Russian city close to the Ural Mountains and home to rare snow leopards and Amur tigers, KIKOK has solid works published on Magnetron Music, Electric Shapes, and Spazio itself. The mastermind behind the remix we selected to premiere, Andrey Moonoton, in turn, is an ex-member of St. Petersburg duo Andrei & Eleanora. Now stationed in Moscow, his eclectic 80s/90s-soaked sonority has been published on Permanent Vacation, Tigers On A Leash, IDA, and... drum roll, please... Spazio!

For his take on the title track, Moonoton started to administer his magic touch by tweaking the BPM (from 126 to 130) and then adding heavy doses of percussive elements. The biting arpeggios plus the 90s-ish frenzied aura he introduced brought even more drive to his version and the result is definitely one of the highlights of the release.

Bristol-based up-and-comer Joe Litherland - Artist name Litherland - joins Mood Of The Era with Proximan Betrayal, a release that is best described as a cerebral cocktail party of tingling euphoria and emotion.

The 21-year-old British Southwest native might still be considered as a neophyte of sorts in the world of electronic music but recent releases showcase a sophisticated sound that innovatively combines elements from new wave electro, breaks, trance, acid, and techno.

Kicking off the 3-tracker with MOTE Records is Proxima, a goose bump guaranteed, relentless slab of trancey acid and electro house that burrows deep into the listeners subconscious with its sparkling synth patterns, dreamy pads, and fading vocals.

In pursuit of Proxima, is Strife a gargantuan dance floor shredder with its thundery and adrenaline-fuelled acid patterns, backed up by thumping drum work and deep rolling basslines.

Orbital 191 closes the EP with its melancholic and soft ambient soundscapes that are topped with playful percussions and synth patterns that together create a tantalizing journey through space and time.
