Broken

Like a phoenix from the ashes, or Ukrainian culture after centuries of demolition, the Kyiv based label Noneside Records is experiencing its revival and rebirth. After all, «Nothing will stop an idea whose time has come» - these words of chief Stepan Bandera make it clear to everyone: if you really burn with sincere emotion for your dream - no difficulties will stop you on the way to its realization.

Five unique tracks from Slava Los, Yevhenii Loi, Lostlojic, Luschn and aqua. - is a tech house with elements of trance with soul and passion from musicians who write music despite the war. Visualization of the whole action on the record is the picture «The hug» by the Lviv artist Oles Derega.

Slava Los makes his debut on vinyl with the beautiful track «Snus» - old school trance in the best traditions. The author now defends the borders in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, so he decided to fulfill his old dream about the vinyl. Yevgeny Loi is also currently in the military, but this did not prevent him from making a new version of «Bounce» - a trance for a slow, erotic dance mood. Lostlojic, who is also the art director of the project, recalls the important message of «Send Me F16» in the uncompromising track of the same name, or rather in its VIP version created especially for the release. Known to vinyl collectors for releases on Deeptrax and Infinite Pleasure. Luschn, a Kyiv legend and mega productive musician, known to tech house maniacs for his releases on Vector.Kyiv and Noneside, invites you to have fun and crazy dances with friends to his rehearsed «Ostinato Transdanz». Newbie aqua. has a unique recognizable style, where the rhythm is constantly changing in each track, nostalgic for the favorite place of childhood - near the Hydroelectric Station in Zaporizhzhia, crazy beats and steppe motifs in the track «H.E.S.».

Break Out

On December 11, Co-Op - the definitive club night and home of the seminal, early 2000s broken beat movement - returns to Boiler Room for a second round.

Last November, Co-Op Presents combined members of the original community (including IG Culture and Bugz In The Attic members Seiji and Alex Phountzi) with current torchbearers like Henry Wu, K15 and Alexander Nut (Eglo Records). 

The memorable session was a flashback to broken beat's Plastic People heyday, reigniting interest in the influential scene and eventually resulting in Co-Op manning their own stage at Dimensions Festival 2016.

As if that's not enough, the crew also return with new music in the bag. The story goes that the day after last year’s event, Boiler Room programmer, Errol Anderson, arranged a studio session where the original and current folk could collaborate for the first time. 

The first glimpse at that get together is now ready to share. Listen to “Substance” with South London producer Henry Wu on original production and IG Culture and Alex Phountzi on remix duties.

As the pendulum swung back and forth his mind slowly became fuzzy. He began to fall under a deep and luxurious spell in which he had no grace or control. His mind now belonged to the hypnotist and there was no way back. It was quite a skill to be able to hypnotise someone in such a fashion, to encourage their inhibitions to leave their body and fly wild with the wind. This was no magic trick or a play on words but a full blown takeover of mind and soul. 

Anma Records deliver a three track EP featuring Sofatalk and K15 on remix duties. This one is an embodiment of deep and soulful house with lush textures and graceful elegance.

Some record labels we hold in particularly high regard, and Brighton-based WOLF Music Recordings is absolutely one of them. Forty-nine releases deep since its 2009 birth, WOLF’s catalogue is artistically diverse and made up only of high quality musical produce.

Needless to say, we’ve premiered some WOLF music before, so we’re excited to again have premiere rights to some of their music. This time, we’ve got the A3 track, Keep it H 2000, of their 46th EP, Pedro and Jenna Camille’s This Is What I’m Going Through.

The record features five tracks spanning predominantly jazz and house, scattered and sometimes covered with broken beat and more experimental elements.

Keep it H 2000 brings the voice of Washington DC’s Jenna Camille’s to the fore. This track is probably the EP’s quintessential crossover point between jazz and house. Jenna’s light and amicable voice is held up by the intricate percussion, smooth keys and bass and playful synth melodies of her production partner from Porto, Pedro.

The track is almost straight jazz until toward the end when an off-beat hi-hat cuts a whole new groove into the rhythm, lifting the song out of a smokey jazz-club atmosphere and into something lighter and house-driven.

Special mentions are due to the last two tracks on the record: B1 shows off Pedro’s stylish production skills, while the experimental flare of the EP shines through the ultimate track in its short but sweet 80 seconds. Due for release on July 20, you can bank on this being another notable notch in WOLF’s musical belt.

One of my first edits from my library of found sounds: "Relaxing Rain and Loud Thunder" is designed as a brief intro into my perspective on contemporary field recording. This is actually a few different storms, recorded in different times in various places piled up on top of each other to create a uniquely soothing three and a half minutes. Brand new bruk banger from Kuna Maze, “Something To Say” meshes broken beat with the romantic edge of rhythmic Brazilian-funk. Forthcoming on the “Backward” EP for Tru Thoughts. Released 13th August.

“Backward” is a new direction for Kuna Maze and a new chapter for the artist. “It’s a look backwards to go forwards” explains Edouard Gilbert aka Kuna Maze. “It’s the first time on my solo project, that I’m using my background and training as a jazz musician.” Shedding off the post-dubstep sound that was linked to Kuna Maze’s initial success in his hometown of Brussels, “Backward” see’s the DJ, producer and multi-instrumentalist return to his roots, applying his studies of jazz at the Chambery Conservatory in France, to his musicianship and work.

“I want to make music that makes people want to dance. That’s why I love broken beat because it’s at the meeting point between jazz and dance music”. It’s not just broken beat that seeps through on the record, pockets of UKG/garage, house and jazz-fusion amalgamate into the sonic palette of “Backward”; direct influences can be heard from the likes of Domu, Moodymann, Azymuth and Horsepower Productions.

Having just released a collaborative album with French-producer Nikitch titled ‘Débuts' which saw the duo win over tastemakers such as Gilles Peterson, Nemone, Tom Ravenscroft (BBC 6Music), Jamz Supernova (BBC 1Xtra), Tim Garcia (Jazz FM) plus many more, Kuna Maze was motivated to add more live-elements into his productions, using the energy from this project and their extensive time on the road.

The EP artwork, by sculptor, painter and friend - Cedric Esturillo, evokes feelings of both nostalgia and modernity (a sentiment echoed in the music) through the use of collage and aerograph painting. “Aerograph was used a lot for jazz-fusion album covers in the 70s such as Miles Davis – 'Bitches Brew' and Herbie Hancock – 'Thrust', and with this EP I was looking back for the first time – so aesthetically it made complete sense to me.”
